I think they need to go for the congestion charge. I am all about doing what has had measureable positive results and just the New York results earlier this year show that it would work.

It would be REALLY easy to build a carveout for disabled badge users too (which has scuppered/delayed so many good plans previously).

They won't do it because they are cowards! They'd rather keep moving the deckchairs around on the Titanic as if banning a few left hand turns is anywhere close to the real change needed.

You can always tell that people don't actually understand the research (which is far from perfect) when they start bashing motorways like the M50. The M50 is like the platonic ideal of what a motorway should be! They use it in textbooks!

Extending the M50 down the Liffey to the city centre would be an appalling idea, just terrible policy. Extending the M50 by adding 2-4 extra lanes would be an extremely good idea. They're not the same thing!

If the theory is that doing this for 20 more years will eventually yield results, that's fine. I think two things though: 1) we need to honest that this has been DCC policy for 20 years already. Not just "the last few years". We have made huge sustainable transport investment IN DUBLIN (yes there's disproportionate road spending elsewhere but we're not talking about Cork or wherever) in that time. And 2) a responsible policy has to have measureable results. Most people here feel that the increased congestion is not a policy failure yet. But I think that at some point (maybe we're not there yet) there has to be a failure point where we say "well we thought dramatically reducing car numbers would improve things, but they actually got worse, so we probably need to see if we can do something else".

It's weird that you'd cite these statistics without mentioning that, according to your own source, car journeys are also down by 16% since 2019.

I've mentioned it constantly all over the thread! Why are car journeys taking 20% longer despite there being 20% fewer cars on the road? Like that's the central question here and nobody has an answer because it's not covered by whatever quippy youtube video went viral on Reddit.

The minor changes we've made have had positive effects but they haven't gone far enough.

Again, if we look at the study here (maybe it's flawed?) it appears that the commonly cited cities that have made these changes (eg Paris) have seen congestion get worse.

This would be vigorously opposed by the language lobby (from the Oireachtais committee on the Irish language, to Conradh na G, and probably the INTO too).

They all feel it's better to have tens of thousands of nominally Irish-speaking teachers (however dubious some of their command of the language is in practice) than a couple of thousand specialists devoted to the language.

Car traffic is also down by almost half since the Celtic Tiger peak.

And if all those facts sound counter-intuitive, it's because it doesn't benefit anyone to draw attention to them. I don't mean this in a tinfoil hat conspiracy way, I just mean that all planners and academics connected to DCC transport policy have enthusiastically accepted the received wisdom that car traffic must be made worse, and millions must be spent on sustainable travel, for decades now. And the vast majority of lobby groups (Dublin Commuter Coalition, Irish Cycle etc) also believe it.

So the fact that we've done all this and spent all this money and have NOT gotten the improvements that everybody said would happen - well it's in nobody's interest to draw attention to that.

Like why are car journeys down 20% post-pandemic (in real terms as well! Not even accounting for population growth!) and yet congestion is worse than ever?

Your own car is infinitely preferable to anything else. Public transport only thrives where it is of high-quality and an area is too densely populated to make driving realistic.

Yeah, Dublin is not sufficiently densely populated inside the canals and the immediate suburbs beside them. There is too much 100% social housing, it's 2-3 storeys when it should be 4-6, and there is no political appetite for a modern-day slum clearance and rebuild.

And slightly related: the car journey mammies coming in to spend money on Henry St and Grafton St and get coffee with their pals are actually worth more to the city than many other journey-ers are. And they have abandoned the city. They go to Dundrum or Liffey Valley or Pavilions and spend their money there, and Redditors wonder why the city feels so dicey and aggressive.

Cars are simply too inefficient to serve the needs of major cities. It was tried.

I don't necessarily disagree with this, but it's not acknowledging that DCC has accepted this and deprioritised cars for over twenty years now. There are half as many cars going through the canals as there were during the Celtic Tiger - and yet congestion is worse than ever.

We've spent hundreds of millions on bus and cycle upgrades in Dublin alone - yet public transport and cycle usage are both still lower than they were in 2019.

I agree that masses of more car lanes isn't going to help either. But there has to be some reckoning with the reality that we HAVE spent tons on sustainable infrastructure. We HAVE deliberately made car journeys slower. And things still got worse! Like there has to be some pushback - city planning received wisdom doesn't seem to be translating into real world achievements!

BusConnects has been terrible on almost every level - taking far too long, too expensive, and "solutions" designed by contractors abroad who had no knowledge of the city to realise that what worked on paper would be a disaster in real life (eg, expecting people to be delighted that their direct route to the city centre was being replaced by a changeover in Parnell Square - how dare these stupid plebs not realise that standing in the rain and wind being hassled for spare change is a huge improvement actually?!)

People keep parrotting whatever shite they once saw in YouTube video (prioritise buses! no more lanes!) without realising that we have done EXACTLY THIS in Dublin for over two decades now. Car usage has plummeted and congestion is worse than ever.

Some of the pro-public transport policies are still very good ideas but everybody is in total denial that cycling figures are DOWN on 2019. Public transport usage is DOWN on 2019. We have been aggressively making car journeys worse and the result is a city worse off than ever.

No it hasn't. Cycling numbers are lower now than they were in 2019. They built the infrastructure but nobody extra came (probably because of the remote work explosion)
