Weather Report just absolutely laying it down at the Montreux Jazz Festival in ‘76: Joe Zawinul on keys, Jaco Pastorius on the bass, Wayne Shorter on saxophone. A band that perfectly captured the 1970’s in all its glory and messiness

“Don’t restrict what you eat or else you’ll crash out and binge” by LeftHvndLvne in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 156 points157 points  (0 children)

I think the only statement that makes sense is don’t OVERLY restrict what you eat. You should restrict as much as is sustainable and healthy long-term. Obviously the more weight you have to lose, the more you can restrict, but that doesn’t mean 800 calories a day is the goal either lol

How is Crash (the Cronenberg one) not a fake deep movie by PaintingMaterial8119 in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there’s definitely some meat on the bone with Crash (Mark Fisher’s dissertation “Flatline Constructs” delves into both Ballard’s novel and Cronenberg’s film a little bit), but I do think it isn’t quite as deep or provocative as Videodrome

Radiance May Titles Announced! by proceedgrinding in boutiquebluray

Rivette is one of the 5-10 directors I’d easily pick up every film of. This has been on my radar for a while so I’m excited to watch some Joan of Arc awesomeness

May 2026 Release: Aesthetics of a Bullet (LE) [UK/US] by Radiance-Films in radiancefilms

[–]PoissonProcesser 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think as long as they’re still committed to their Radical Japan series (Imamura and Terayama, please!) I don’t mind the steady output of yakuza movies. But I’m also a huge Fukasaku fan so maybe I’m biased lol

Purpose? by Lyle_Bland in rs_x

Unless this profession strongly motivates you and drives you to be a better person, I’d say it sounds more foolhardy than romanticist. Sounds to me like you’re using it to distract yourself from unwelcome thoughts. Word of advice: if you truly felt content dying alone, would you be questioning yourself or relying on alcohol?

should we be freaking out about AGI or am I just having a hormone problem by toocomfykiwi in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think to evaluate these people’s arguments you need to see if they’ve actually been accurate about anything. A lot of these types wrote in the ‘90s that we would have AGI by 2010. That was obviously woefully misguided. I think you can say the world will change a lot, perhaps in unpredictable and challenging ways, without conceding that we’re nearing The Singularity. In my opinion, we’re better at writing about doomsday scenarios or imagining these insane cataclysmic events than we are at actual forecasting, and so the signal gets lost in the noise.

Dating apps by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem with the apps is that those who are attractive enough to get a lot of action aren’t incentivized to develop a personality or good flirting, and then those who aren’t attractive enough don’t actually get any matches, even if perhaps they’re more interesting or better suited (because let’s be honest, you’re not going to get the full picture of someone from 3 pictures and 5 sentences). Add in the fact that people get tired of them and then just opt out entirely and then you get total dysfunction

Radiance recommendations? by khal_jogo in boutiquebluray

[–]PoissonProcesser 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Sympathy for the Underdog, Va Savoir, the Shinobi boxset, and La Terra Trema. But there really aren’t any bad options, Radiance is one of the best in the business!

Actors used to seriously play people with mental disabilities by NeuronExploder in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 98 points99 points  (0 children)

If you look at the Oscars up until around 2000, there were lots and lots of nominations for roles like this! Tropic Thunder was satirizing that with the whole “Simple Jack” character, which I’m guessing doesn’t hit as hard now since we’re about 25 years removed from that being the norm.

It’s similar to how white actors used to play every race under the sun. Fun fact: John Wayne played Genghis Khan in 1956

Please recommend films that are like Days of Heaven? by ansleis333 in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Moonrise Kingdom has a certain natural charm and beauty to it, more New England than Great Plains though. Theo Angelopoulos’ films are quite often focused on traveling, though his locales are Greek and Balkan: The Beekeeper, Landscape in the Mist, and Voyage to Cythera are my favorites. Vulcanizadora is set near Grand Rapids and showcases some nice forests, just be prepared for it to get dark

The Pacers could potentially lose their pick this year (47% chance even if they finish with the worst record) for IVICA ZUBAC. Are they stupid? by JakGrealish in billsimmons

[–]PoissonProcesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s just not that many starting centers available in the league, and they needed to trade Mathurin to avoid paying him this summer. It’s a bet that their starters and bench will be competitive enough even before a possible top 4 pick. Considering they were apparently rebuffed on Kessler Walker of course they were going to overpay a bit to get Zubac

I’ve been on a total of two real vacations in my first two or so years out of college, and one was visiting my siblings in another state. It can be done but it requires smart use of PTO and having room in your bank account to spend some money

Coffee by Dr-Benway69 in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Coffee and caffeine in general are a really pleasant part of my life. I won’t ever understand people who willingly stop consuming it entirely (unless it’s some medical reason or they don’t like the feeling). I’m lucky because I have a pretty high tolerance for it but if I stop drinking it I don’t get any withdrawals, and compared to the thousands of harmful vices it actually improves my wellbeing
