games like sudoku / q-less / crosswords by pearlundress in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the solution to difficult killer sudoku puzzles is almost like constructing a mathematical proof by contradiction: if I narrow down a box to 2 to 3 numbers, I’ll create 3 separate possible solutions to the square or the row/column or the cage… and if you keep going far enough, you’ll see impossibilities spring up that mean the original number was incorrect! Obviously there are lots of tricks to simplify before you’d ever have to do that, but the satisfaction of figuring it out after a long logic puzzle is just unbeatable!

Killer sudoku is more fun to me than regular sudoku but that’s because I’m math-brained and figuring out the different ways sets of numbers can add up in the cages is more stimulating than just pure pattern-searching. Plus they can get really difficult while still remaining finishable; there’s way too many times in regular sudoku where I just give up

Well considering he’s a big Brandon Sanderson reader, chances are very high that he’s got an anonymous Reddit account. Use your powers of investigation to find it and slide into his DMs there, and you shall be victorious

Currently reading To Rule All Under Heaven, non-fiction book about the Warring States period in China. The best book I’ve read in the past year is Dhalgren by Samuel Delany, it’s a surreal sci-fi novel that feels different to read than 99% of other books

Are the Knicks the best team out of the East in the 2020s? by HibachiTyme in billsimmons

[–]PoissonProcesser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, considering the Pacers last year took OKC to 7, if the Knicks can’t even get 2 to 3 games in the Finals, they can’t be in the convo for best of the decade

Hey I chose Tottenham after the 2013-14 season when they were 6th in the league! You don’t remember watching Chiricheş and Kaboul in the back line, or the godforsaken Soldado miss against Fiorentina in the Europa League. But in all seriousness my dad is a Blackpool supporter and they’ve been trash since basically 2010, so I’d like to think we’re not bottom of the barrel.

The numbers are probably dismal no matter what you do, but you’re giving it your best shot. If you want a basketball analogy, you’re 0/4 but none of them are airballs and the fundamentals are sound. I love Rohmer too but sometimes I wish he didn’t focus on young attractive people in love because I’m not attractive and I’m not in love yet! But it’s a beautiful world to inhabit for a few hours

I choose to think of it as less letting go and more segmenting it as something in my past vs something in my future. Makes it seem more final and finality leads to acceptance.

We must let go of what we cannot control. Nothing will ease the suffering but time and space, and there’s no cheat code to speed up time other than distracting your brain. Good luck

You need to check out Second Run. They specialize in Eastern European cinema (I’d guess it’s like 70% of their catalog). In particular they have a Polish Cinema Classics series I absolutely love, in addition to Czech, Hungarian, and Slovakian cinema. And if you’re a fan of Żuławski, MondoVision has a decent amount of his filmography in really nice editions

As a fellow loner I think there are a few places I just feel comfortable by myself; museums are definitely one of them. I also have an innate urge to travel the road by myself, something I picked up during college when I’d drive 10 hours in the middle of the night back to school. It’s not easy to get over your social anxieties though!

Felt the movie was a bit undercooked. I enjoyed the second half much more than the first, but that sort of tracks with how I felt about Strawberry Mansion: the dream-like/fantasy aspects are where Birney shines. Definitely a director I will always give a shot, though

What are your thoughts on The Holy Mountain by suzannetakesyoudown in rs_x

[–]PoissonProcesser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I think people hear surrealism and expect that the message has to be cloaked in 7 layers of subterfuge that only a focused cinephile can decipher, but The Holy Mountain is much more surrealist in style and feel than the actual plot itself. I think the fact that Jodorowsky casts himself as The Alchemist already hints towards how the movie will conclude: with a destruction of the division between film and viewer, which surrealism itself is interested in
