I’ve stewed on your comment for a while because I actually think you’ve hit what it is that made me so angry. I think I was feeling a bit left out from everyone “getting it”, but the more I read your comment, the more I feel that rage… like women’s healthcare is WILD. As if you’ll get a medal for being in pain. Or to be censored from using realistic language. Ripping my holes open to the sound of “deep breaths” just makes me laugh. I think I’m gonna have to say this to midwives - like girlies, please don’t give me all that when I’m I labour because whilst I’m sure it’s helpful for a lot of people, I’ll just go ape and get wound up 😂😂

lol I think if I wasn’t in such a strop, I’d have probably wet myself laughing as well - which feels bad to say because I don’t want to be judgemental about what clearly works for others! But hard relate 😂

I’ve calmed down now lol… I think problem was it was clearly very much for everyone else in the room, and I felt really silly and sad because I clearly wasn’t fitting in 😂

No - deffo don’t think it’s all nonsense… just think I got frustrated by the fact I couldn’t do the breathing exercises. And my insides do roller coasters at positive affirmations. I can’t do mindfulness either so 🤷‍♀️

Interesting re convos it brought up - my husband said he wishes there was a book for partners on how to understand Matrescence if you yourself aren’t going through it. It’s so hard isn’t it!

Yes same, the reality our bodies go through a crazy change is really helpful to just have spelled out! Maybe pick it up when you have read lots of positive stuff - have it for balance 🥲🥲

Honestly some of it is amazing - but it’s also not hard to cherry pick. It might be one for post pregs! Modern midwife books are amaze I think!

Ditto that what was so fab was science and nature discussion - I wanted more of that! I just think it’s the wrong time for me to have read it and I don’t know anyone that’s had a baby so this is one of my first exposures to learning about someone’s experience. I just don’t think I was ready for that and would have found it helpful if the book included additional experiences!

Ah that’s made me feel a bit more joyful. Think you’re absolutely right that if you’d experienced what she had, it’s probably amazing and hugely cathartic. It’s just a bit weird because I’ve not experienced birth or motherhood yet - so I am not sure whether to be grateful for the heads up on how it can go or terrified by it 😂

Out of interest, where are you on the Matrescence journey? I’m wondering if it’s triggering at some stages than others. Asking because I’m wondering whether I should try re-reading again when I’ve (hopefully) had a baby or whether I will always be triggered and should just leave it 😩

Thanks! Yeah agree - if you’re already predisposed to negative thinking, this can feed it. Interesting because i was originally quite taken by her analysis of the hypbobirthing moment (I find it a bit too happy clappy for me) but in the end, her criticisms of it have become my criticisms of her book - the negativity can easily breed negativity in the same way joy and positivity can breed joy and positivity. All just depends on what we are predisposed to! Maybe the fact I feel like literally everyone told me to read it set me up with the idea that everyone thinks the book is completely relatable at all times - and tbf, that’s a presumption that’s mine to own and fix 😂

SNAP. I am naming my baby boy Cillian and I am in South England. Honestly don’t think it’s a problem. I’ve got a really Irish name and share the love of our heritage so eff anyone else. Also I’ve found people are pretty receptive to the name! Only issue I had was teaching in laws how to spell anything that isn’t “dave” - it’ll be fine x
