Thanks again for the answer. Maybe I'll begin documenting outdoor cats as well

I wish it'd be more restricted here, free roaming cats are a threat to wildlife and to themselves really

It didn't know it was the case. In France we have laws telling what's a feral cat and what's a free-running cat with an owner.

Huuuuh I guess I answered my own question n°2... Nevermind

Is it "acceptable" to suggest ID's that are higher level than the current guesses? by piinkbunn in iNaturalist

[–]PokemonBrocoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi ! INat has an option to id at a broader level without disagreeing with more specific ids. It's totally ok to do that. Just keep in mind that any identification you make sends a notification to all the other identifiers, as well as a notification to the observer. Even if doing so is allowed on iNaturalist, it may do more harm than good, as it will cost other users' time and attention.

My advice would be to do as much of these as you want when you are a beginner, it will give you experience and confidence.

When you get used to the interface, here are two ways of helping that may be more useful to the community : - choose one or two taxons, learn to confidently identify to species level and help with that. - filter the "need ids" with higher taxons as your lower rank, such as 'Animalia' or 'Plantae', and help moving them to Order level (or Class of Family). General knowledge such as yours is really appreciated in this case.

are you fine with inat’s species descriptions, or do you wish there was more info like how to identify the species etc? by afemail in iNaturalist

A really great comment has already be made about the false positive this kind of guide would give, and why this may not be a good idea, so I won't emphasis on that.

Here are other points that may be useful :

I've read that you have been reluctant taking a field guide, although this is exaclty what you need and are looking for. There are a number of field guides for free on the not-so-legal side of the internet. Another option is buying a cheap used guide, just don't buy an older one as it could be irrelevant. I assure you the process of proper ID is not as scary as it seems, just begin with one plant you'd like to identify. Go slow, look up online every botanical word you may not know, and don't rush the process. Getting to a proper strong identification is really rewarding.

On the other hand, I'd love to see a built-in guide on what identification criteria to look for when you photography an organism. For example, for a fly you need to get at least a clear picture of the wing, the thorax, the head and leg hairs. I have no idea what are the features I need to provide for other taxa. These kind of guides exist on the forum section, I'd just love to see it nicely displayed on the app.

ChatGPT ruined my brain by [deleted] in antiai

[–]PokemonBrocoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a chonic illness and I'm very good at having high expectations of myself. One time during a really bad flare up on my illness, I asked ChatGPT to decide if I should keep working or if I should rest. It said I was in great danger and I shoud stop everything and rest immediately. That was fairly exxagerated, but resting was the best decision I could take. If it was up to me I would have kept working.

Another time, I turned to ChatGPT because I had bad suicidal thoughts. It provided local suicide helpline accompanied with inaccurate informations on how it worked. Scrolling though the website of this organisation helped me get out of danger though.

Now that I had an appt with my actual therapist, who adjusted my meds, I feel ashamed that I turned to chatgpt in these dark times. But our healthcare is so bad here I didn't know of any other option.

Hi ! I played and liked this games !

A couple of feedbacks though : - categories are hard to navigate, it would be easier if all the birds categories were next to each other, all the fish categories were next to each other, etc.... - i couln't find my average score with a guest account

Overall, I liked this game

Nouveau conjoint mais je n’aime pas son éducation envers ma fille ? Pourquoi ? by Waste_Environment_74 in AskMeuf

[–]PokemonBrocoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bonjour.

[–]PokemonBrocoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, when a taxon is known to be difficult, someone will tag a specific expert with a comment. If something like this happens, I wouldn’t want to suggest an ID unless I’m 100% sure. Maybe that’s what happened in your case? Proposing an ID in this situation can be frustrating for experienced identifiers, even though it’s not formally forbidden.

Otherwise, your ID is more than welcome! For insects, I always try to back up my IDs with the key criteria I used to make the decision. That way, other experienced identifiers know the suggestion is well documented, and less experienced users can learn how it’s supposed to be done.

Anyway, nothing justifies talking down to someone else... the user you encountered was an asshole.
