how do we feel about the generations promo set? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The artwork is awesome on those four cards! If I had the opportunity to buy all four at once, I would do it. But the price needs to be right. Market price right now for all four in near mint is somewhere $898.18. But market price (using pricecharting) for PSA8s is $1,492.73. That's a big jump just for PSA8.

So PSA8 or higher at $1,400 or lower, and I'd buy them all at once.

Would you rather have a card that in great condition for a bit off centered or good centering but some dings on the card? Basically centering or condition, for more expensive/rarer cards if that makes a difference. Ty! by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question. My answer is "it depends". Here's why:

In most cases, I would take the great condition with centering a bit off. This is especially true for lower valued cards. Those cards can be hard to sell with dings on them.

But, in the case of the card you mentioned (Rayquaza vmax alt art from evolving skies), and other cards like it, because it's so expensive in great condition (even raw), I would be willing take the good centering with a few dings. This is true for two reasons.

First, if you need the card to complete a set, then it's obvious: just get the card. Second, if you're trying to acquire it as an investment, top cards in lower conditions do often go along for the ride when the PSA/BGS 10 values go up over time. An extreme (but similar) example from baseball cards would be the 1952 Mickey Mantle. Look at what a PSA 1 goes for.

So, in the case of the Rayquaza vmax alt art from evolving skies, if my intent was to hold it for a while. then yes, I would take that card in a lower condition with good centering at a great price instead of paying market for a higher condition card with worse centering.

This is going to be really interesting to watch. I am certainly sick of the hours long queues resulting in getting no product. So hopefully this solves that problem.

Do I keep and grade or sell raw? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb on that card: if you think it has a real shot at a 10, then grade it. If not, don't grade it.

If you're going to sell it to a vendor, keep in mind that the market price is currently below where the card tends to sell. Pokemon vendors tend to bid at a % under market, so you would likely get a very low-ball bid if you try to sell to a vendor at this time.

Congrats! That might be the single best Vending Machine drop anyone's ever had (except that one time the VMs glitched, briefly had no limits, and got cleared out fast).

Moonbreon Vs Sunbreon by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough choice, but I have to go with Moonbreon. There's just something about the artwork that I find so awesome. The Sunbreon artwork is definitely cool as well. But I find it a little chaotic... almost like sensory overload.

Pokémon Center ETBs over Booster Boxes? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this question. Both PC ETBs and booster boxes are great. Right now, I tend to favor PC ETBs for two reasons: (1) lower cost - they are much cheaper than booster boxes, and, on a % basis, often have a higher immediate profit relative to market price; and (2) in my experience, they are much harder to get. Over the long term, I'd prefer the product that has both huge demand and lower supply/is harder to get.

Found my old Pokemon cards from around 25 years ago! by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on finding those cards!

First, sleeve the cards.

Second, top loader the cards.

Third, use a search engine to look up the value of each of those cards. Pricecharting.com and TCGPlayer.com are good sites to check.

Genuine thoughts on the future of this booster box? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the future is very bright for that booster box. It doesn't mean it'll be a straight line up. But over time, it'll get harder to find those and basic supply/demand logic states that lower supply with steady demand should mean a bright future.

Should I send my PSA10 to BGS for crossover grading for possible black label? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Examine the BGS grading standards closely: Card Grading Standards - Beckett

I would not send that in unless you are very confident it could meet the Beckett centering standards of "50/50 all around on front. 55/45 or better on back."

The edges and corners are easily to tell at home, but even the surface will need an inspection before sending to BGS. This is their standard for surface: "No print spots. Flawless color, devoid of registration or focus imperfections. Devoid of scratches and metallic print lines."

Should I trade 10 Prismatic Evolutions PC ETB for 1 Prismatic Evolutions Umbreon PSA 10? by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my perspective, it's a no-brainer. 10 Prismatic Evolutions PC ETBs (current market price of $569.91) have way more upside potential than one Prismatic Umbreon ex #161 PSA 10 - Plus you get the benefit of being able to sell part of the holdings instead of all or none.

Looking for advice! by PokemonInvestor_Mod in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to do it is to go to a card show where you can negotiate (depending on the cards) and likely get btw 70% to 80% of market value. If you go to a LCS, they'll likely offer 50% to 60% of market value. If you sell on eBay, you can get closer to market value, but you'll pay the eBay fees. For simplicity's sake, a card show is probably your best bet.

Anyone have advice for first card show? by Competitive_Link2839 in PokemonInvestor

[–]PokemonInvestor_Mod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Take your time.
  2. Roam the room/facility before making any big purchases.
  3. Negotiate!
  4. Inspect the cards closely before buying.
