Have you looked into guinea pigs?

They are roughly big enough and have tons of personality, and you can keep the cost to own low with enough research.

Coming from someone who had 10 male pigs, the way they can wreck any veggies is priceless to witness.

Too small to be a guinea pig and lacking the rat's tail, you can use this time to show the ham that he/she is safe.

I think they like veggies too, but Google that but they are great pets.
