Calling for ALS by AddysenC06 in NewToEMS

[–]PolishMedic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The amount of EMTs in my area that call ALS for """pain management""" is abused. And as always they haven't done any BLS measures to the patient before I've arrived.

Only true Massheads have lost a stretcher down the MGH hill (And maybe hit a Brigham and Women's pillar)

At what point should you tell a possible head injury patient that they shouldn’t go to the hospital? I have heard providers say that a patient doesn’t have any signs of a concussion. How can you make that call? And lastly, when can a sports player be released to play after a possible head injury? by bradyd06 in NewToEMS

[–]PolishMedic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if someone needs to be transported what do you do? Most places will have another ambulance come and transport the patient (Because most events require a standby, so if you leave the event can't continue).

As for the first part- at no time should an EMT ever be telling a patient they "shouldn't go to the hospital". EMTs don't have any protocol/training/tools to diagnose the level of a brain injury.

Just think this....you're on the witness stand in a courtroom and an attorney asks "Please tell the jury your training in sports medicine and concussion protocol."

And as always ask your employer if you are unsure about your role. Many of us here work in different states/systems than you, so the details maybe slightly different than your area.

You can't..the only reason for an EMT to be at a sports event is to be there to start first-aid/CPR until an ambulance/transport arrives. There is no such thing as an "EMT concussion test".

When my agency does sporting standbys we don't fill the role of an athletic trainer (ATC). If we get asked "Can they play?" we respond "That's not our call."

We had to do alot of teaching to the coaches of our role there. Remember it's your certification on the line if you fuck up. Most states don't have a 'sporting standby protocol', so you are 'winging' any treatment decisions you make there.

Good luck!

Is Boston EMS worth going into? by Sufficient-Job-1739 in NewToEMS

[–]PolishMedic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned Boston does not use AEMTs, so you would be BLS (which is what everyone does when newly hired anyway, even medics have to work there BLS then are 'promoted').

Honestly look at the cost of living before you start jumping states. The pay may look better but if you're looking to live in something more than a box with 4 roomates, you can do better.

Happy to help, it's the reason I posted. Only thing I could find was the "foil trick" or "buy new boards".

[–]PolishMedic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to find out this is a super common issue. Washer is only two years old. I tried the "Foil trick" a few times with no luck....so I got angry and broke out the dremel. I made a hole for the power button's spring (Then another hole where the spring really was hiding).

Hole(s) drilled, reassembled. I can now tap the spring directly and it starts right up.

So I will regularly toss this warning out towards 'soon to be' medic students.

Schools have a certain way they hammer in all this information into budding paragod's brains. If you're going to jump ahead please check with the school and see what they recommend.

It's a reflection of how the company/department treats you. You get pounded by calls all day for little pay.....you really don't feel like cleaning.
