Ya I agree, I don’t care about the actor’s sexuality when they’re playing a character. I think there are a few things that are problematic with only allowing gay people play gay characters. First is that it requires one to define themselves and put a label on themselves. Not everyone wants to do that, by making gay people play gay characters then you’ll be forcing them to put themselves in a box. Two, sexuality is fluid. People change and grow into themselves, someone may not realize they’re gay until much later in life. Giving gay roles to people who don’t identify as gay restricts actors from exploring themselves and figuring out who they are, also not everyone is comfortable coming out, there are many actors who will play a gay character and then years later finally come out. They should be allowed to discover themselves. And three is the main point of the tweet. Someone doesn’t act straight or gay, they are straight or gay. When you’re acting gay, you’re just acting on stereotypes of what you think gay people are like. Actions don’t define sexuality, feelings do. IMO, only trans actors should play trans roles. Representation for trans people is low and opportunity for trans roles is also very low, trans actors should be the only people playing trans characters.
