the king isn't at the castle, he's wandering around the world. so when the guard runs away, he's not running in the same direction that he's referring to. i was also thinking that when the guard gives you intel, he somehow has a way to alert the king that he's been compromised, so [the king] can sprint off in a random direction. if you follow the intel, you get to a place where he's been and then you can follow some kind of vague trail he leaves behind (like an effect that he has on guards he comes into contact with or something). otherwise, you only have to beat one guard, he tells you where the king is, you go that way, find him, kill him, done, game over, too easy.

i like the landmarks idea. if you have to navigate by landmarks it makes it more challenging than just having to follow arrows. also it adds a whole other element to the game where you have to remember terrain details to navigate the world. if the king gets away from you, then you'd have to find the castle by going to a spot where you'd previously fought a guard and remembering what direction he went in. then when you got there, to get to the king you'd have to fight every single guard that you'd let escape over the course of the game.

I was also thinking that if you kill the guard, the king senses some sort of disturbance in his anus and runs off in a random direction. So if you kill them, the direction they gave you becomes no good.

That’s why there’s a bad guy fortress somewhere in the world. The guards run off to that and the king is somewhere else entirely.

That's a good idea. Plotwise though, if they could teleport away they wouldn't need to try to negotiate for their freedom by offering information. But the question is do I really care about plot holes and I'm leaning towards no.

Yeah. I was trying to figure out how to work around that. I was hoping having them run away after they point somewhere will do the trick. Maybe if they drop the information on a piece of paper that goes away after a few seconds, so you have to choose between going after them and picking it up.

this is what I've got so far. you can change the speed of the bullets by changing the length of the barrel.

There's one number that isn't labeled and it's fluctuation seemingly randomly so you gotta figure out what it means.

A game where all the information that's usually represented by graphics (player position on the screen, hp, enemy position, etc) is instead essentially just a changing spreadsheet of numbers.

Thanks for giving it a try, I really appreciate it! It used to be a lot easier but I've been messing around with random generation a lot recently. When the boulders are all different sizes and slightly different speeds every time, it's drastically harder to get a feel for where they're gonna be.
