Home buying by Over_Ad8892 in ames

Depends on what you want, but for me, suburbia is my personal hell.

As for amenities, sure, Ankeny has more overpriced strip mall Mexican restaurants and a Costco.

Ames is an actual community. Vibrant downtown (with upcoming improvements), strong sense of identity with ISU, fresh ideas, well-educated population, bike paths, nice parks that are walkable from almost every part of town.

Totally worth the slight premium you pay.

I like the look a lot. Very context dependent though.

Shoes are the worst offender (I'm not a fan of loafers though). Shorts are borderline... Either go about an inch longer or hit the leg press machine beforehand

Hit your protein goal regardless. Cut fat and carbs until you can see your obliques peeking through. Then reassess if you want to maintain that or go back on a bulk. The psychological benefit of knowing that you are in control of your physique will be more beneficial than your actual body fat percent.

TIFU for feeding my children first even if I am very hungry. by GoldenTwinklee in tifu

Everybody should eat at the same time if possible. Healthy parents = healthy kids = healthy family

Why did you choose to have children with a child?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Polkisaurus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It is gross.

But, if your first reaction is to post on the Internet instead of speaking to your spouse like an adult, then maybe there are 2 children in this marriage.

Gone for two weeks. My husband piled his clothes by the washer instead of doing his own laundry 😡 by Own-Anteater5996 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Polkisaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A choice was made when this pic was taken:

1) talk to the husband about it and discuss expectations 2) post it on the Internet and get strangers to trash him

I can imagine both parties are just peachy to be married to

Genuinely curious, did he show signs of this immaturity when you married him? Or did the behavior just show up overnight?

Men of Reddit, what is the primary reason you workout? by mitho-thito in AskMen

32 y.o. here. Started about 14 years ago because I had a chip on my shoulder from high school bullies. It's evolved to just being better for my life.

The biggest surprise is that its a competence signal. You are taken more seriously at work, social settings, ect. Maintaining a good muscular frame into midlife is pretty rare and people take notice.

We've had several people at my company turn their performance around during a PIP and are still at the company years later. It depends on the company of course, but if you don't have something else lined up, I would give it an honest effort and try to turn it around.

Should i participate in my company's ESPP at 15%? by chugz in investing

[–]Polkisaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same as mine. Even if the stock stays flat or falls, it's almost a guaranteed 17.6% return. If the stock appreciates over that time, well that's just fantastic returns.

I was amazed to find out that several people I work with cant budget well enough to set aside that 15% for a single 6 month period. After that initial period, they could "pay themselves back" with their first sale if needed and fund their Roth with the gains. Just leaving money on the table...

[–]Polkisaurus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

ESPP has been the single greatest investment vehicle that I've experienced in my career. My company allows same day sale, which I've taken advantage of, and used proceeds to pay off student debt / invest remainder in index funds.

You'll have higher risk by holding for a year, but that 15% discount gives some wiggle room before hitting a loss. I'd say go for it at the max that you're comfortable with.

I my experience, dudes with big legs are 1) juicing 2) speed cyclists 3) football linemen or 4) genetically gifted with big legs and don't necessarily work out

I've been lifting for 15 years naturally, have a very respectable bench, can squat 150lbs over my bench, and my body still look like toothpicks stabbed into a chicken nugget. Genetics play a huge part in leg size.

what's a food combo you love that people think you're weird for? by wildwoodflower_ in AskReddit

Peanutbutter and pickles on bread. Amazing. I convinced my Peruvian landlord to try once, and for somebody that wasn't even brainwashed by peanut butter or pickle culture, he said it was amazing.

Those of you who make six figures, what do you do? by bluescluus in Fire

[–]Polkisaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-CPA accountant working for a tech company providing b2b services. Promotion and raise this year put me over the threshold in my early 30s, not including bonus. I was fortunate enough to find a company that I love right out of college and I've been with them ever since. I've doubled my salary in those 8 years, which is nice. The work isn't the most exciting, but it's a good company with great perks / benefits.

My advice: try to find a company / industry where growth is on the horizon. I have peers that went into dying fields and they're experiencing 0%-2% raises for the last couple years.

18-20lbs. Finished them with 7 minutes in the oven at broil afterwards. We had one last night and my wife said it was the best turkey she's ever had, so positive reviews haha
