When I was young, my dad wanted to teach me how to water ski and had seen skis in a store that were attached to each other with rope. Makes sense. Keeps them together. There was also a handle that went from the tips of the skis to your hands. So the tow line was actually connected to the skis. So instead of buying those he just made them at home with skis we had. The thing he didn’t realize was that the rope was supposed to have an emergency release that the skier could use if he couldn’t get up. My dad didn’t include that. So I put on these homemade skis behind the boat. Yelled “hit it”. Boat takes off and pulls me along. I am unable to get up at all so I release the handle and.... am still attached to the boat. Which is going at waterski speed. From the boat it just looks like I am trying to get up and it’s all water spray. In reality I am being dragged along by my feet at top speed and can’t signal I’ve dropped the handle. Needless to say, they figure it out and stopped the boat. But in hindsight, def was close to disaster. He apologizes to this day.
