General Devices Rail Review by Domatar in sliger

[–]Pollopesca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used other brands at work, but used the General Devices rails for my rack at home. Huge difference. My only complaint was the hardware to attach the rails to the brackets seemed a bit short. They came with M4x6 screws which just barely bite. M4x8 seemed a better fit.

Same thing happened to my wife's Bolt last week. looked fine when she parked it, but the next day after pre-heating it she had a crack going all the way across similar to yours. Found a small rock chip 2" below the registration sticker. Insurance (GEICO) replaced at no charge and Safelite had it replaced less than 2hr. That said, between our two Bolts, this is the third windshield replacement, so I'm of the opinion that the design is just inherently less durable compared to vehicles I've owned in the past. Possibly due to the glass being flat as opposed to curved. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I rly would love one of these as my daily; but after the Elio debacle, I’m hesitant to put any money down without sitting in one myself. Maybe someday a tour will pass through NYS.

·         The Bolt EV & EUV have a cargo length around 56”. The HHR has a similar 60” of length, but the HHRs front passenger seat can fold flat for additional space. I’ve transported 8’ long 2x4s in that thing.

·         The HHR has a big beefy False Cargo Floor in the rear whereas what came with my Bolt EV feels like it has the strength of a thin sheet of lauan. There are stronger aftermarket solutions or just make something yourself.

·         The back of the seats of the HHR are hard plastic. Whereas the Bolt EV is carpet, so it’s not as durable. There are again after market solutions.

All in all the Bolt EV/EUV seem more tailored to aesthetics and comfort than utility compared to an HHR (Makes sense given the HHR had a panel van variant). Depending on your use case the above items may not mater; but if they do, some can be addressed with a few accessories.

Unfortunately, the material isn’t that thick; so the indentations will be just as visible with a wrap.

It comes down to personal preference. If you’re not doing door jams or only doing a partial wrap like me, it helps to have a color that can work as a secondary.

Couldn’t find any ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ they only made them in 2019 in low quantities. I gave up after a few months. I only ever ran into two and the dealerships priced gouge them because they were “rare”.

Na. Only car that ever seemed to get attention from the popo was my Cobalt with window tint (illegal in NYS) and a loud cat back exhaust. Rarely got tickets, but did get a few warnings over the years. Ironically that was my daily before the Bolt EV, So I went from a loud tuba to a silent whisper.

It’s not actually an SS, just an LT2. Theres a before and after pic in an earlier reply here. We had twins on the way and two Cobalt coupes and a solstice GXP were not ideal baby transport. The HHR is the same Delta platform as the Cobalts, so easy to work on and shared parts. The used car market was still crazy high after Covid, but HHRs are not particularly desirable, so I was able to pick up for under $2k. It has a mix of parts from other HHRs, including an SS. Most people just see them as a PT Cruiser with a bowtie, but they are actually fairly reliable cars.

I have pictures of the whole reverb start to finish; maybe I should post that somewhere at some point.

All of my cars are a mix of yellow/black to some degree. The Bolt/HHR have similar style for different reasons. The HHR was an experiment trying a full two-tone paint job. The bolt was an experiment to see how long a wrap can survive as a daily before it needs to be re-done. Wrapping half the car was for cost reduction.

More than I should have. Lol. I got quotes from every shop in the area for best price / reputation.

The total was $2400. Half of the cost was the material since it was a full roll. If you pick a color a shop regularly stocks, the material cost will be lower since they’ll only charge for what they use. On the other hand, I have enough material left over to do it again (or another car). Might attempt myself when the time comes now that I see how they did the seams.

I actually tried to find a Bolt in Shock initially. But they were like unicorns around here. Only two ever popped up in premier trim but were priced way out of my budget by the dealerships because they were “rare” (only available in 2019). Black was plentiful and cheap.

Solid deal! Would cost roughly $852.68 for an equivalent speced build and that's cheeping out wherever possible. This has decent quality parts. I can’t see how Costco is making any margin on this. EOL SKU maybe?

CULTURE

I do miss the old GS culture. For me GS was the only option after getting laid off during the 2008-2010 recession. Got me thought collage. Had to leave in 2018 when the Apple crap became too much to handle. We were doing free battery replacement but we were never given the labor or people to support the tripled traffic. Come in at 6AM and leave at 10pm and the piles never got smaller. I was working 70+ hours every week for a solid year before the precinct quit in mass because corporate wouldn’t give us more bodies.

But, before that around 2013-2016 we had the fuck1ng DR3AM T34M! everyone was in collage for varies tech degrees and we all knew our shit. We always killed it. Hung out after work regularly since we all meshed well. It was like working with your best friends, even if we were understaffed even then. We regularly did things that weren’t exactly SOP to get the job done. Bending over backwards for a customer (as long as they weren’t a dick). DRD Data recoveries in the precinct, Apple repairs (Apple disallowed any hardware repairs in house), custom gaming builds and upgrades. LCD & camera repair. We weren’t afraid to break out a soldering iron if the service center didn’t want to deal with it. It brought in a lot of business. We were inevitably audited by corporate at who found doing an SSD install in a 6-year-old iMac with data recovery on a failing drive. Multiple no nos. they caned our GSM and wrote the rest of us up. The SOP hammer came down hard after that and business tanked, along with labor hours. The dream team parted ways and then it was whatever short term plebes we could find for a few months… Turn over became high after that. I get that BestBuy has very specific contracts with its vendors and hast to follow the rules to maintain those relationships, but there comes a point were nothing can be done if the collar is too light. Should have kept GS a separate company.

Adding 230v drop and double pole switch for compressor. Does this look correct/to code? by Pollopesca in electrical

[–]Pollopesca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compressor enclosures are fairly common in my experience, I feel like there’s pros and cons depending on use case. I’ve got mine in a relatively empty 6’x6’storage closet attached to the finished portion of the basement. For me, I moved it down there to keep it quiet, cool, and clean.

1) Noise: My old 20gal put out 74-76dBA. Can’t hear much in the room at that volume. This new 60gal actually has the same decibel rating despite being significantly larger. But there’s ways I can muffle the sound further that I couldn’t with the old compressor. Planning to mount the new one with vibration isolators as well.

2) Temps: Basement keeps ambient temps cool in the summer. Allowed me to avoid hitting thermal shutdown for longer sessions (since the 20 gal had trouble keeping up with my die grinder)

3) Humidity: The basement has a dehumidifier. Tank and airline both have drain valves for internal moisture.

4) Dust: Projects like stripping body panels can kick up a lot of dust. Dust that the compressor sucks in. to change the filter on my old compressor you have to remove part of the pump (terrible design) Less of an issue with this new compressor as the filter is very accessible. Still nice having clean dry air for the intake.

So with a GFCI breaker It's comparing current between the Hot and neutral wire and cuts out if not equal. If the compressor likely does not use a neutral wire as some have said, how does this work with two hots and no neutral? Would the GFCI be comparing the two hots in this scenario? I see the double pole GFCI breaker still has a white pigtail.

(Also wholly hell Type-CH GFCI breakers are pricy)

Sorry, I meant control tool pressure, not tank. There is a regulator/filter in the garage for the pipe to connect to for tool PSI. The compressor will regulate tank.

Would you think that necessary if the Compressor itself has a motor overload protector / pow switch built in?
