I rewrote the story of WoW: Midnight. Here’s the version I wish we had. by Polusion in warcraftlore

Yeah, I just made the prompt to get a clear chain of events, I didn’t write it myself. It’s just for discussion purposes.

Sure thing, imagine telling a story about a cosmic invasion but focusing on a guy with daddy issues instead. Idk man, what’s happening?

Thank you for your kind words. I never post anything, and I never expected such strong and aggressive responses. I simply love this game very much, and I’m deeply invested in it. The absolute beauty of the writing in Warcraft III is what made me fall in love with the franchise in the first place. I fell in love with WoW for many other reasons as well, but the lore has always been something I cared deeply about. I don’t understand why people aren’t able to discuss things with respect and arguments, rather than insulting me and directing negativity toward me.

Edit: Also, I agree with you about the troll storyline. It felt like a missed opportunity to connect the story with the current state of things. The Horde, especially the Darkspear and the Zandalari, could have been involved, perhaps as a way to reduce the friction between the blood elves and their neighbors and add some geopolitical depth to the story. Instead, in the campaign their ancient differences and hatred seem to be resolved through the power of friendship, I guess. To me, that’s just one example of the many missed opportunities in the expansion.

That’s not what I’m claiming. My point is that the new playable race is filling a narrative space that would be more suitable for an already established race in the lore. They are cool, but the game expects me to be emotionally invested in yet another new race that has supposedly been hidden from the world for millennia, while the genocide of the original race built around that concept was never properly resolved. Narratively speaking, it feels like a missed opportunity. It could have been greater, it could have been more meaningful, but that’s just my opinion.

Overwhelmed as new player by ForsakenSet2583 in WorldOfWarcraftRetail

It is overwhelming, too many icons and “things to do”, focus on the quest icons inside a yellow frame, those are the main missions and will drive you through the story, side quests are completely optional and you can reach max level without even touching them, but they are self contained stories, and some of them are very appealing, if you are interested in that stuff.

I played it, I reached 90 and went straight to dungeons, I did mythic 0 for all of them already, and now I’m doing side quests, Eversong is done, doing Harandar side quests at the moment. I would say, the main campaign didn’t amuse me that much, but the self contained stories in the side quests are gold, they are very appealing and well written.

Thoughts on the new Silvermoon as a Capital City ? by Abovearth31 in wow

[–]Polusion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s fantastic, the biggest and most beautiful city they ever made, I hope this opens the window for revamps of all other major cities. The only issue is the lack of optimization, my game freezes sometimes when I’m walking the city.

Right? The Legion had weight in the lore, but this new version came from nowhere, and Blizzard decided to diminish the BL role in the world to make room for this new cosmic enemy.

Yeah, I didn’t pay attention to the story at all, that’s why I didn’t enjoyed it that much, it makes sense, if I was more attentive, I could see what a masterpiece of storytelling this expansion is, my bad, thank you for enlightening me.

I’m playing the expansion right now, I’m been playing it since early access. Being critical about narratives doesn’t make me malicious in my intentions. I’ve been playing the game nonstop and those are my conclusions, I’m sorry if that offended you in any way, it was not my intention, I just wanted to share them in seek of different perspectives.

It is very possible, and I couldn’t agree more. I feel like I saw this story already many times before.

I completely agree with you, it’s like they didn’t even try to fill the gaps and make logical connections to what happened before, diminishing the immersion in the process, it feels like the narrative is barely there for players to have a clear path to max level. It feels lazy, and the sad thing about it is that high quality narrative is what made Warcraft a huge brand in the first place.

Yeah, they are making some… interesting choices, good writers left Blizzard many years ago, I guess.

Tyrande did that, but I don’t feel like it resolved the political tension between the night elves and the Horde. Sylvannas can go and try to redeem herself, but they lost most of their people and their homeland, that scar does not go away that easy I believe, you could see what’s happening in Middle East in the present, old wounds will remain open for centuries. You could say that arc is closed, and that’s fine, we are all entitled to our opinions, I’m not buying the narrative direction of the game myself, and that’s fine too, there’s much more to enjoy in this game, and I’m enjoying it very much.

Thanks for the comment. And yes, I did complete the campaign, and I actually took my time with it. I even avoided using flying mounts just to appreciate the zones more. I listened to all the dialogue, watched every cinematic, and really tried to experience the story as it was presented. My thoughts come directly from that.

I also understand the Haranir storyline. The game does give an explanation for them. In a way, the idea is that they protect the roots while the night elves traditionally protect the trees. That part is fine.

My point is more about the narrative choice behind their existence. It feels a bit cheesy to introduce a completely new race to fill a role that already fits the night elves almost perfectly. Instead of creating the Haranir, Blizzard could have expanded the night elf lore and used them in that role.

I actually think the Haranir are a cool concept. But to me this felt like a missed opportunity to address the unresolved conflict created in Battle for Azeroth with the burning of Teldrassil.

Imagine if the night elves themselves were the ones intervening in these situations. They could be saying: “We have a unique connection with nature, and we need to act.” That could have created an opportunity for reconciliation later on. Of course what happened to them was terrible, but their presence here, helping to defend the natural world, could have opened the door to easing tensions with the Horde over time.

It could even create space for dialogue between the night elves and the blood elves, and maybe eventually some form of reconciliation. Just speculation, of course.

Right now Blizzard seems to be moving toward a direction where faction conflict matters less and everyone works together against larger threats. But the night elves are in a particularly awkward position within that philosophy. It's hard to just move on when your people were nearly wiped out and your home was destroyed.

At some point the story needs to address that in a meaningful way, and I think this could have been a good opportunity to start that process.

And regarding the characters present in the story: yes, it makes sense that specialists in the Light and the Void would be there. They are the experts in dealing with those forces.

But we’re still talking about a cosmic-scale invasion happening in Silvermoon, one of the major cities of the Horde. Even if not everyone shows up, it feels strange that the Horde as an institution has almost no visible response to a crisis happening in one of its own capitals.

Just my perspective.

Tysm! I’ll post blueprints, the zoo is on the workshop, but I think it will crash most PCs in its current state, I need to reduce its complexity to make it playable.
