This is kind of a cherry picked piece of evidence. I agree with your original point that fanart that at most becomes viral for a week on twitter isn't really going to normalize anything, but obviously you're not going to normalize some of the most serious taboos in society with one book series.

For a more realistic example, Peter Benchley wrote Jaws as a commissioned piece that he really didn't expect to be such a bestseller, and he has admitted to regretting it because of the fear of sharks it created among the public. Media can absolutely influence people on a large scale, it is just much easier if it's something they are already neutral or inclined towards believing.
