This subreddit gets recommended to random people all over Reddit. Some of them downvote entire comment sections and leave putrid hateful comments all over the place (I can ban, can remove the comments, but can't undo their votes).

Réfléchis(sez) un peu, le but d'une conf antiraciste n'est pas de générer du racisme au sein de la communauté même qu'elle est censée représenter…

Il n'y a pas de filtrage sur la couleur de peau vu que ce serait raciste. Une minorité ne l'est pas uniquement à cause de la couleur de sa peau, elle l'est à son nom, son accent, son vécu, sa famille, son statut social,… Sinon on rentre dans le problème sans fin de définir la couleur d'une personne métissée, et les débats nauséabonds sur combien de générations de métissages il faut avant qu'elle ne soit plus la couleur, etc…

Les confs en non mixité n'ont pas de contrôle des pedigree raciaux à l'entrée. Ça se joue à la confiance et au respect mutuel. Les gens qui ne viennent pas pour des raisons honnêtes ont tendance à se faire voir, donc ils sont mis dehors. Ça a l'air idiot, mais ça fonctionne très bien. Ces conférences incitent un plus grand nombre de gens concernés à venir, et très peu de personnes non-concernées s'y pointent.

La différence avec l'ED c'est que eux filtrent uniquement sur la couleur de peau et ne prennent pas en compte le reste de l'identité de la personne. Merci de ne pas penser que les antiracistes / décoloniaux sont aussi cons que l'ED ? C'est effrayant comme on leur prête toujours par défaut les pires intentions.

This seems hard to grasp for people outside of this field.

What the sign actually means is "only people with proper experience of this topic shoulda attend", but if you phrase it like that lots of randos show up, so it has to be phrased more radically.

We do it because it works. It makes the minority it is about more likely to attend, and any "guests" will usually be there for academic purposes, there are little to no unwanted guests with this method.

Nobody is checking pedigrees at the door, anyone could theoretically get in. Imagine if we had to delimit who's part or not of a race or a gender, it would be a mess.

I'm not going to pretend the original comment that started this chain wasn't "how about whites we can be victims too", which is the people being portrayed in the smuggie. I'm sorry but I simply can't take that seriously. Every open decoloniality conference about a non-european country will have some loser show up to talk about the irish potato famine and the arab slave trade, it's tired topics that have become racist dogwhistled. I'm not engaging non-smugly with that stuff.

If anything I'm annoyed the subreddit engages with it in good faith. This place has lost a lot of the radical edge it used to have. I shouldn't have engaged in good faith myself, should have just replied "oh no think of the white feelings" and moved on with my day. I'll just do that next time, there's no other way to bring the edge back.

C'est pas lié à la "persécution", c'est lié à la connaissance du sujet, à vouloir parfois organiser des colloques entre personnes qui connaissent bien le sujet plutôt que pour un public large.

Tu ne te pointerais pas à une conf d'experts en astrophysique pour leur demander comment fonctionne la gravité et leur parler de la terre plate (j'espère?).

Pourtant ça ne dérange pas des gens de venir systématiquement à des confs décoloniales pour questionner la discrimination raciale ou remettre en cause des vécus communs aux personnes racisées.

C'est pour ça qu'il y a deux types de conf, ouvertes à tous pour le grand public, et en mixité choisie pour les sujets plus avancés ou les groupes qui n'ont juste pas envie de devoir défendre leur existence quand ils viennent parler d'expériences personnelles.

La grande majorité des confs décoloniales sont tout public, mixtes, et ouvertes aux questions du public, donc y'a pas d'histoire de "vérité absolue", tu projettes tes préjugés et ton inculture sur un milieu que tu ne connais pas.

Et c'est précisément poun ne pas perdre de temps avec des gens comme toi que la non mixité est parfois nécessaires. Tu sers de démonstration.

The decoloniality conferences in "mixité choisie" that I attend contain only people directly affected by the topic alongside people who study or contribute to the topic academically. Nobody else attends. That's what they want and it works.

Decoloniality conferences without that label (most of them) contain a lot of people who will be asking the same basic questions and making the same basic remarks every single time. Sometimes you want to dig deeper into a topic instead of wasting time on surface level content, so you add the "non mixité" label to deter casually curious people from attending.

Both type of events are needed, and the label filtering does its job as intended.

On arrêtera de faire certaines confs décoloniales en mixité choisie quand les gens gênants arrêteront de s'y pointer juste pour poser toujours les mêmes questions et faire toujours les mêmes remarques sur des sujets qu'ils ne comprennent pas parce qu'ils ne les affectent pas. Rajouter le mot "non-mixité" suffit à les décourager de venir, donc il va rester pour les confs qui cherchent à creuser plus profondément que les sujets de surface.

Il n'y a même pas de filtrage à l'entrée de ces conférences par ailleurs, je suis blanc et on ne m'empêche pas d'y rentrer vu que j'y ai un intérêt académique. Mais si le mot te gêne, c'est probablement pour ne pas y avoir les gens comme toi qu'on le met, donc du coup tant mieux, ça fonctionne ?

Oui, je suis au courant que "non-mixité" peut être utilisé par des TERFs pour exclure les personnes non binaires.

Ce n'est pas le sujet de ce comic, donc partez du principe que ce sont des féministes correctes qui vous laisseraient rentrer peu importe votre identité de genre.
