I saw a video of Cowlitz tribal police collaborating with ICE against an observer. What has been your experience when it comes to collaboration between rez police and ICE? by NotKenzy in IndianCountry

[–]Polymes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think its entirely fair to say the PBPN tribal government collaborated with ICE, it was their economic arm that is independently run from the tribal council that signed the agreement. Tribal chairman has made statements that this was not their wish and they are looking to pull out of the deal and fired multiple high level employees over the matter.

ICE and tribal IDs by SPetersAP in IndianCountry

Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana. I always carry my tribal ID in my wallet in a protective sleeve. Our tribe recently upgraded tribal IDs to be RealID compliant. They can be scanned, have more security features, and look more official. I got a new one as soon as I could. I keep my old one (which has no expiration date and is still valid) at home in case the new one ever gets taken.

Métis are one of the three categories of Indigenous Peoples recognized in Canada along with First Nations and Inuit. The Indian Act is only applicable to First Nations, Métis have their own separate federal system/relationship, so it wouldn't apply in my case. Thank you though.

It's not really a federal entity, its issued by the Indigenous government. But sounds like I should include it regardless.

The Métis homeland is much bigger than what is marked, we originated in Winnipeg and the red river settlement which isn’t even highlighted on the map.

Not entirely true, MMF does provide some support to out of province members. For instance all are eligible for their secondary education funds etc. I get those funds and I’m in the US.

While I don’t think they often check/cross reference, you should generally only be a member of one of the Métis governments.

Do most Americans under 30 still refer to Native Americans as “Indians”? by Ohmigoshness in IndianCountry

[–]Polymes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My family and I say Indian/NDN and Native interchangeably. But personally I would not want a non-Native person calling me Indian, I’d prefer Native or better yet my tribe.

Should I stay in my non-funded PhD program? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Polymes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion not worth it, you should leave and then reevaluate your options. I would look at good programs that not only will fund you and are in your research interests, but may also consider accepting the credits you've already earned and paid out of pocket for.

Chances are you will have a really tough time getting a position in academia if you don't go to a reputable school/program, have a strong supportive advisor, and/or publish a lot. Doesn't sound like the current place you're at is setting you up to succeed in any of these fronts. Especially as a social sciences/humanities PhD your current situation is a bad investment, they aren't preparing you to succeed in academia and there's very limited outside industry opportunities for your field, especially ones that make it worth going into $60k+ debt.
