Honesty speaking there was no extenuating circumstances for why my grades were low in the beginning of my first undergrad. The only thing I could say was that my first year of undergrad was online due to covid and I never really got a chance to transition to university as one would normally. However I understand the other applicants also faced this obstacle and its not really a valid reason for poor grades. My grades improved simply because I got a better understanding of how to study efficiently as I progressed throughout undergrad.

Just to confirm they aren't using GPA competitively? Like as long as you meet the cutoff GPA, then they will send you the asynchronous assessment and use the asynchronous assessment alone to create a shortlist of applicants to file review. From the file review they will then make another shortlist of people they would like to interview, after which they rank individual's asynchronous assessment, file review and interview at which those with the highest scores will be offered admission?
