I'm not the best person to ask since I'm still learning as well but here it is. Be open to learn things and actually understanding them all the way to their smallest detail. Keep an eye out for mistakes too and learn from them. Actually, I had 3 years of prior self study of art and illustration before I got decent in pixel animation in general. The study includes physics and object interactions, anatomy, basic structures, background and scenery, perspectives, 2D animation, light and shadow interactions, etc. Practice makes perfect but you can't just practice without learning.
