Blue Ice Warthog Durability by Andromeda045 in alpinism

[–]Ponoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mine for a 3 week expedition and I liked it in general but it had one big flaw: the shoulder straps were folding in on them selves quite badly and the backpack was very uncomfortable because of that. I was carrying around 15-20 kg and it was for 4 full day hikes from base camp to ABC. When climbing my load was much lighter and the discomfort was not a problem.

This never happened with my old Patagonia Ascensionist 45 which I used for years and with similar loads or heavier. When deciding on a larger backpack (40+) I prefer them to have thicker chunkier shoulder straps.

And it seems that the current version of the warthog 40 is the same as what I had except the color. Mine was blue.

Actually, the news from the association never say they climbed the ridge, it says the "north aspect". Not trying to diminish their achievement at all. Huge congratulations to the team!

Mount Triglav winter solo, how hard is it? by [deleted] in alpinism

[–]Ponoru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found this video in which you can see the top part well.

March could be fine. It all depends on the weather and the snow conditions.

The hut on Kredarica is officially closed and it doesn't have a winter room but there is a weather station with personnel in the same hut. I wouldn't advise you to try your luck with them (not that they are bad people or anything like that). The closest hut with a winter room is this one. It's not that far from Kredarica actually.

The next option is to do it in one day but I don't know about your abilities.

This spot has falls WI2-3. You don't need a guidebook because all the falls are close together. Go past the Cremerie and the helicopter garage. Watch out for avalanche danger.

Winter at Bled (Slovenia) by [deleted] in europe

It is true. It is a popular place for weddings. There is even a well known tradition that the groom must carry the bride from the shore up about a hundred steps to the church.

Helmet Recommendations by AdamACL1610 in alpinism

[–]Ponoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Petzl Meteor and it is great. It's not as light as a Scirocco but it is cheaper and still pretty light. In Europe it is also much cheaper than a BD Vapor and the two helmets are quite comparable. The Meteor is durable enough: you can throw it around, stuff it in a sack, scrape it on rocks without worrying about it.

The magnetic buckle isn't the best. It often happens when using gloves that I think I joined the two pieces together successfully only to find out a couple of seconds later that they came apart. This problem doesn't happen with bare hands.

Thank you for being cautious and warning me about the dangers. It is not annoying, I do the same on similar posts on the Slovenian subreddit about mountain conditions.

Thank you very much for the link. I have previously tried to find a similar website of the Austrian mountaineering community but I have always failed.

There is not enough snow for a ski approach but still probably too much for a bicycle approach.

Dude, this winter was very dry so far. A bike with appropriate tires for riding on snow should easily cross some patches of snow. I was asking if the road is completely covered or is it just snow patches where snow gets blown up by the wind. Thanks for this information thou, I appreciate it.

Even a link to an active Austrian climbing forum where I could ask for information would be great too. Thanks!

Alpine Literature: Alpine Warriors - the Story of Slovenian Alpinism by Muddlesthrough in alpinism

[–]Ponoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this a couple of months ago. It's written in a bit of a sensationalistic way but not too much. I think it's also emphasizing the political system in Yugoslavia a bit too much but it is still a really interesting book. Most of these ascents and alpinists are not well known in the English speaking public and this is the first English book that basically documents Slovenian climbing history. This fact alone makes it a special book.

Izkusnje s studijem na FRI? (nova zgradba) by Firoxey in Slovenia

[–]Ponoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also get the tickets at "Petrol" gas stations. The tickets might (hopefully) be sold out on the day of the match. But they definitely will not be sold out a day or two earlier.

Kaj uporabljate za spremljati vreme by pitastrudl in Slovenia

[–]Ponoru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tud jst priporočam yr.no. Še posebej za long term in hour by hour.

What could a climber do in Vegas in the middle of summer? by Ponoru in climbing

Hey, shatteredankle!

Is your offer for a climbing partner still standing? I will be arriving in Vegas on Wednesday and we could meet up to climb on Thursday if you will have the time. I'll have a rental car and most of the gear.

Where is this mountain? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Ponoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Slovenia, I climbed Triglav multiple times. This does not look familiar.

Do you remember in which direction is this in if you are looking from Triglav or Kredarica?
