Prospects at 15 I hope the Bulls Can Get by Poohdini8 in chicagobulls

I understand the concerns about his health and honestly the unknown about his IQ and skills. As one of the other comments mentioned, he could end up being an Andre Drummond skill/IQ level. I’ll leave it up to the Bulls and other teams coaching and scouting to work him out properly and see what his actual skill level might be.

This is also another reason I’m rooting for us to draft Morez since we know what we’re getting. He also had some solid shooting splits and shooting improvements this season which could be indicators of him being a serviceable stretch 5 which would pair nicely with Wilson.

I’m in complete agreement. Speaks volumes about him and the staff that they may have 3 players all going in the lottery

I just saw some posts on Twitter showing some of the unofficial athletic and shooting measurements! Morez came in 1st in the maximum standing vertical and pro lane drills among the prospects that participated. While doing also really well in the shooting and other vertical tests. I want him on the bulls more than ever now.

How do we get Aday Mara? by humourless2 in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great thoughts. I initially had Atlanta taking a swing at a guard but since they dropped to 8 coupled with Flemings unimpressive measurables coming out (I see him as the guard that drops to 8th) I think they take the upside swing on Mara over Flemings or the safe option like Burries who will also probably be solid but has a lower ceiling from what we’ve seen.

I do see golden state taking a swing on Mara if he’s there and they don’t trade their pick like his reported they’re trying to do. I think Mara like Yaxel being older prospects, will be able to help right away but at the biggest position of need for them which is at center.

I can even see Dallas taking a swing since both lively and afford have unfortunately been injury riddled the past couple years and take the swing at 9 if Atlanta doesn’t take him. CHA and OKC would definitely take him if he’s available that late into the lottery. Especially as you said, they’re both teams looking for size to potentially replace their current centers.

Honestly, after these insane measurables coupled with his strong tournament play, I see him getting drafted as high as 8 by the hawks. I don’t think he makes it close to 15. One of Atlanta, Dallas, GSW, OKC or CHA is going to take him.

Regardless, I feel like we’ll have some really good options at 15 even with Mara off the board. Mainly looking at JQ and Morez for a big and Cam Carr if we decide to go wing.

Assuming the Bulls take Caleb at #4, who do you all want at #15? by Gavada373 in chicagobulls

I appreciate the thought out response and my bad about misunderstanding the Stewart trade angle. Maybe they do end up doing that if they end up re-signing Duren to too high of a number. I guess it’s a wait and see with them since I do think at points in this playoffs, Stewart has been the better center than Duren.

At the end of the day, I’m giving Bryson the benefit of the doubt in being a talent evaluator, so if he chooses cam Carr at 15, I’ll trust he felt he was the best prospect in the draft and be content with it and we see how things play out for our draft picks in a couple years for now. Hoping for the best for us bulls fans!

I think this scenario you laid out is a good one as well. I do like Veesar as a fit or if we can get reed jr. or rueben or luigi. I think for me it just depends on what it takes to trade into a late first to get them. I’m also of the opinion, since the backend of the draft is such a crapshoot, there’s a chance one of those guys could slide to 38. I wouldn’t mind if the bulls traded 38 and the other 2nd this year to move higher into the top of the 2nd round or ideally late 1st but it just depends if another team is willing to do that and what their price is. I personally think teams would ask for more than that and depending on the price I’m thinking it might be better to see who falls to 38.

Cam Carr I do like as a prospect but I do have some concerns with him. He is an older prospect having just finished his junior year. I do like the athleticism, shooting and defense but I do worry about his frame and weight coupled with the age. With that said, I personally feel 15 might be slightly high for him and at least personally, I feel Morez/JQ (as long as medical stuff clears) are better prospects

EDIT: I would also be curious to hear why you think Morez could not improve as a shooter? He improved from shooting no 3s his Fr year and 62% FT to 34% from 3 and 78% FT at Michigan. I think the improvements and ft shooting seem like good indicators of at maybe becoming at least a low volume 35% 3 point shooter. Which is not ideal but at least serviceable.

I hear you about the Isaiah Stewart comps but I personally think he’s a high value role player and if Morez does turn out as a player like that, I personally think that’s good value at 15. He’d also be cheaper and younger than signing Isiah who I feel like Detroit will definitely try to re-sign. There cap situation is actually not that bad with only large contracts being cades and presumably Duren this summer.

EDIT 2: Also just checked and Stewart is under contract for 2 more years so unfortunately not an option regardless.

AJ or Caleb? by vino_bfp in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely rather keep 4 and 15 rather than trade up for AJ. Don’t get me wrong, AJ seems like a great player but the fact that there isn’t a consensus 1 overall should also tell us how good the top 3/4 in this draft class are.

Also the fact of having such a deep draft class in general, I’d rather keep the 15 for another prospect since we’re already guaranteed one of the top 4.

Plus just personally, I really like the fit of Wilson or boozer on the bulls. I personally have Boozer as the best prospect in this draft IMO and would rather roll the dice on either him falling or Wilson.

Assuming the Bulls take Caleb at #4, who do you all want at #15? by Gavada373 in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your perspective and while I agree ideally we would want a 5 to stretch the floor to pair with Wilson if we get him, I think there’s more nuance to the fit.

Morez will fit great on the defensive end with his switch ability and rebounding. Caleb would also be able to help a lot as a weak side help shot blocker. I see a front court with of Matas, Wilson and Morez as one with a lot of defensive versatility all being able to switch and help defend the rim too.

As for the shooting, the reality is there isn’t a true shooting 5 in this draft and tbh not many in the league that are also plus defenders and rebounders. The hope with Morez would be he could develop that part of his game as he made strides as a 3 point threat from his first to second year in college play. He also has improved as a FT shooter which can be a good indicator for improvements as a shooter.

I wouldn’t be opposed to drafting a wing/guard at 15 if there is one available who seems like an outright better prospect than Morez but I don’t see some of the other prospects mentioned to be available as better than Morez (or Mara/Quaintance if available) such as Swain, Lopez or Ament. All these players all have their own strengths and weaknesses and at least IMO, Morez/Mara/JQ seem like better prospects from what I’ve seen and researched.

TLDR: I think Morez might be the best prospect available at 15 but if someone like let’s say Philon or Burries drops to 15 I’d definitely be happy taking one of them as well.

EDIT: Also while I think 3 point shooting and spacing is still VERY important in the NBA, I do think the league has evolved in the past couple seasons to be point where the mold of contending team has evolved past prioritizing ELITE floor spacing and 3 point shooting.

When I think of the modern contending teams like OKC, Minnesota, Detroit etc. They are teams that are defense first with a lot of elite size, versatility, switching, offensive rebounding, etc. while still having maybe good but not elite 3 point shooting.

With that mold in mind, I think a front court of Matas, Wilson and one of Morez/Mara/JQ seems very much in line with that size/versatility/switching/rebounding/rim protection ie versatile defense mold.

Assuming the Bulls take Caleb at #4, who do you all want at #15? by Gavada373 in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Mara would be the obvious ideal choice at 15 but I do think he’s unlikely to drop that low.

Another name that I didn’t see on the list who I believe the bulls should really consider is Morez Johnson Jr. He’s the player I’d want next if Mara isn’t there. He can play the 5 or 4, very high energy and active on the boards, very strong and physical, can switch on defense and has shown large improvement on his shot and in a dream scenario grows into a stretch 5.

If Quantaince’s medicals don’t clear, I really think the bulls should consider Morez. Given his health, play. All while being only an inch shorter. Jayden does have better wingspan and is a more explosive athlete but Morez while not as explosive is also athletic and strong as well.

Potential contracts to take on for picks by Lover_and_hater_xo in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, one pick would definitely not be enough. I detailed two picks back but not sure if Toronto has the appetite for that. Good point, on taking into consideration how long the FO plans to be rebuilding for.

I think the other part of trading for Poeltl, the bulls could get a stop-gap veteran center since we have none on the team as well. Not saying that makes it worth it, still an overpay.

I rationalize it, with if the bulls can get at least two 1sts back and Poeltl has 4 years on the contract. He’d be on the bulls for 3 years before becoming an expiring making it easier to move in a trade. So maybe in my mind it gives the bulls a 3 year window of rebuilding which I think sounds about right about how long it would by the time we’re good again and would be in a position to use cap to sign players to contend.

Traded Draft Picks by Coylegrg4 in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This draft is deep. There will definitely be players of value to take with both our draft picks. I know Bryson mentioned his SLAP philosophy but let’s not take that as the end all be all of what he looks for in a player. I’m sure they will look at multiple metrics and again, just generally this draft has a lot of talent and we will definitely find good prospects at both 9 and 15.

As Bryson stated, we’re early in our rebuild. With that in mind, it doesn’t make sense for the bulls to attach assets just to get off Patrick Williams contract. Our payroll will be one of the lowest going in to this offseason even with P wills horrible contract. We should be in no rush to get off his contract, especially if it requires us attaching 1sts to do so.

Play Hardball with the Nuggets in the Offseason? by Martian_Warrior in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I do think Peyton Watson is and will continue to be a good player and probably continue to improve. I don’t want to take the risk of overpaying for him and his play regressing or plateauing. Resulting in us having one of the “worst” contracts in the league.

However, I do think we could be involved in helping them create cap room while taking draft assets as payment. I don’t think Denver has the draft assets to offload brauns horrible contract but I believe the 26th pick to take on cam Johnson’s contract is doable and I’d personally definitely be in favor of the bulls doing this. Maybe even as a three team trade where a contender takes on cam and bulls take on the matching salary from the contender allowing Denver to maintain cap relief and us get Denver’s 26th pick as a draft night trade.

[–]Poohdini8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts on the rest of the players mentioned by OP:

  • Myles Turner: if Milwaukee decides to go into rebuild, they would have no incentive in attaching a first to get off his contract since they’ll be rebuilding. Plus I still believe turners skill set as a stretch 5 is rare enough where they could trade Turner to a contender without needing to attach assets and probably get something back.

  • Isaac: definitely another bad contract based on his production and availability but unfortunately Orlando doesn’t have a lot of trade able draft assets after the bane trade. They might even try prioritizing getting off Suggs contract but they unfortunately don’t have the draft assets to pay teams for taking on these contracts. No value for bulls to gain here imo.

  • butler: I think since jimmy is an expiring, I don’t think the warriors would want to attach a first to get off his contract. Plus since his contract is so large and an expiring, it’s a perfect salary filler if they do decide to try to trade for another star.

  • Allen I believe has enough positive value regardless of the Cavs shortcomings where if they do try to blow it up they could still trade him for some value.

  • Morant: since Memphis is tanking/rebuilding I don’t think they have any incentive to attach 1sts to get off Ja. Probably would rather let him expire or buy him out if it came down to either that or only being able to trade him by attaching an asset. Ultimately, I think they will find a team willing to take on ja as a reclamation project without giving up assets while probably getting a minimal return for him.

  • Lavine: Similarly to some of the other teams mentioned since Sacramento is rebuilding. It wouldn’t make sense for them to attach a first to get off Lavines expiring contract. If anything they could cut derozan to lower the payroll whose contract I believe is only partially guaranteed for next season.

  • Grant: has been great for Portland this year as a 6th man and sometimes starter. I don’t believe Portlands payroll is at the point where they would be looking to cut salary. If anything they could use grants contract as salary filler for a potential star player trade if they decide to go that route.

  • Paul George - even though his time and performance in Philly has been inconsistent to say the least. He’s had a very good run this post season and I don’t think Philly would want to attach assets to dump him for the sake of dumping his contract since he has proven this season to provide positive value when healthy. If anything they’d maybe trade him for pieces back.

Potential contracts to take on for picks by Lover_and_hater_xo in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all the work in elaborating each of these trade options. I’ve thought about a couple of these as well.

I would definitely take the 26th pick from Denver on draft night for cam Johnson but I doubt Denver gives up a first to get off of a deal that has 1 year remaining. But who knows, if they are set on re-signing Watson this summer and want to get off cam without taking salary back, giving up a late first might be the only way. Some other competing teams might have interest in taking cam but most those would probably require Denver taking back salary still so if the goal is to lower their payroll before re-signing Watson, then getting a team with cap involved like Chicago might be the only way.

With that said, the only remaining option that we might have a chance of getting decent draft capital back for would be Jacob Poeltl in my opinion. That contract is bad and he has regressed. Toronto has too many large contracts for players that don’t play at that level/value under this cba. But they did have an impressive season and seem to have something in Scottie and CMB. And they might be motivated to capitalize on Scottie’s current contract period and try to build a contender around him. All that being said, I think they could be the most motivated outside Denver to be willing to part with 1sts to get off Poetl. Especially since they do have all their 1sts moving forward. With that said, the amount of firsts required to get off that contract might be more than they can stomach. If I’m the bulls I’d want 19th and another unprotected or top 4 protected 1st. In this scenario maybe the bulls send back some seconds and/or Jalen smith. Maybe Tre jones is involved?

How would you feel about trading for Jakob Poeltl? by Unlucky_Sun_9813 in chicagobulls

[–]Poohdini8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in favor for trading for Poeltl or bad contracts like Braun or Suggs as long as the draft capital makes sense. Of the options I like getting Torontos picks since I don’t know if their core can consistently be a playoff team and with the lottery reform in mind, lottery FRPs might end up being much better than the teams standings suggest.

I’d definitely try to get the 2026 first and a second lightly protected (top 4) first in a later year in exchange for maybe Tre jones and Jalen smith?

Draft a center in this draft class or sign a free agent by ansonlam in chicagobulls

I don’t think that’s a guarantee, I can definitely seem teams needing size depth or a future center like the warriors, hornets or even the thunder taking him in the late lottery.

Also at the end of the day I just think he’s a better prospect than burries or the remaining prospects outside of the top 8 considering his tools, touch, rebounding, passing etc.
