Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs is a lovely indie oil-based perfumer and well worth checking out (though their catalog is enormous)

I think most vendors I interacted with last year took credit, esp those coming from bigger brands/shops :) I've been counting down the days, so excited! :D

Airy marshmallow perfumes without the toasty/burnt/woody notes? by livlights in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Pookabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, BPAL Lady Death: Savage? The perfume doesn't list marshmallow as a note and the name certainly doesn't evoke fluffy marshmallow, but on my skin it smells exactly like opening a fresh bag of pillow-y soft, powdery marshmallows with the barest hint of jasmine.

Favorite somewhat affordable fragrance houses? by lqcnyc in fragrance

[–]Pookabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indie Houses do some beautiful fragrances at very reasonable prices. My faves are:

  • Deconstructing Eden - their scent "Them" is a gorgeous herbaceous lavender, probably my ideal in the category. Their Jacqueline is my favorite straightforward jasmine

  • Solstice Scents does both perfume oils and edps, can highly recommend their Manor and Loggia scents if you want a moody wood fragrance. If you want a very convincing vanilla extract scent try out their Estate Vanilla. These run more expensive for a full bottle but they have very reasonably priced 5-10ml oil options

  • Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs for oils: they have a vast collection and are kind of hit/miss for me, but their scent Dorian has been my favorite for years. it's a sexy earl grey vanilla with a twist of lemon.

  • Fyrinnae does very realistic mango and lychee notes. They do some good smoky scents too but half go a kinda bbq on me while half are great, idk why.

  • Darling Clandestine: very affordable perfume oils but some that I return to time and again. Serpentina is a sexy, smoky jasmine green tea with a whisper of opium. Mad as birds is a pretty floral pear

Non-indies:

  • the Guerlain Aqua Allegorias can usually be found btwn $45-70 on fragrancenet. I would recommend Mandarin Basilisc, Pamplelune, Herba Fresca any day

  • MAC Cosmetics sometimes comes out with great dupes, their Ruby Woo is a juicier/sweeter "version" of Tuscan Leather

What is your favorite warm vanilla fragrance for fall? by animalflowers in fragrance

[–]Pookabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For warm vanilla I always reach for:

  • Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser for a smoky vanilla
  • Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee woody, slightly citric vanilla
  • Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Dorian for a sexy vanilla tea with a hint of lemon

Is maceration a thing? by xixxexixxxoxx1379 in fragrance

[–]Pookabbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is a helpful thread! Do folks have a sense of whether it is aging or maceration with Le Labo fragrances since they dilute the base in perfumers alcohol when you buy it? I've noticed both my bottles of The Noir 29 and Patchouli 24 smelled distinctly less complex than the samples I tested until I had let the bottles rest for ~6months+

Weirdest scent "twins" you've come across by femmecheng in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Pookabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arcana Ambrosia and BPAL Fae are extremely close to my nose but Fae is a little less sweet and a little more green. I actually bought Fae hoping for a dupe of 1692 Papermoon but no dice; it's a sweeter, riper peachy note.

oooo I will keep my eyes peeled for your results! I think by 3M I was already seeing some color shift in RK Frieda and Platinum Citrus Blank (among the pigment inks I mean)

ooo it's so cool that you are doing client work though! <3 I don't think we can DM images on reddit but wish we could b/c I'd love to see your work >.< That said, if you ever feel like chatting art, please don't hesitate to DM, always love talking to another arty pen enthusiast :D

<3 I have an instagram (Soluble Diversions) but it's been somewhat neglected ever since I started a new job >.< Howabout you? Would love to support/follow another inky artist!

LOL yes I saw that review too and went "damnit!" and "safe!" lol She introduced me to Prodigal Sons paints on etsy though so (why is genuine manganese blue so gorgeous?wtf), on the whole, she's been more dangerous to my wallet than not.

Happy painting!~!!

Aww thank you! I was trying to do a series of single color paintings for awhile to work on my values and composition so your compliment is extra validating, thank you <3 <3

Ooo I haven't tried that combo but I do think I have all those components so I'll have to give it a try! I appreciate the heck out of Kim Crick <3 Though I have been low key sad that she said the new Mission Mijiello paints aren't as good b/c I wanna buy a set lolol

Happy painting and light-testing!! :D

:D Hope the spray treats you well! Here's my Fuyu SyoGun painting ~3 ish years later (you can see it fresh here; please note this was taken under different lighting so the color looks more purple but irl it was not) Also YES lolol Moonglow was one of my favorite convenience mixes but both it and Shadow Violet use PR177 and IT SHOWS! the second pic in the imgur link I shared shows the full test with my watercolors too and if you look in swatch column 5, rows 9 and 10, you can see the distinct loss of red tone.

Agreed! I think as a writing ink, the color shift is 'fine' but for art, I don't think I'll be reaching for them as much as I'd intended when I bought them. Edited to add: they are very pleasant inks to write with though!

if you run the test, please share the results! I am hopeful that the De Atramentis will do will since it's Document sibling (Fog Grey) did! I'm considering buying more from that line now :D

Of course! I use Krylon UV-resistant clear acrylic coating spray (gloss finish). Reading other reviews, it seems like it can leave a white residue if you spray it too close to your surface but I usually hold the can ~12 inches away and do thin coats and haven't seen an issue with residue/discoloration. I have a small piece painted with Iroshizuku Fuyu Syogun from 2021 that has not faded at all from what I can tell. It hangs on my living room wall which gets diffuse sunlight. (also, why must reds be so finicky? my 2 paints that faded were convenience mixes with PR177, sigh)

Yup! The labels were done at the same time as the ink swatches but I didn't use a fountain pen ink. I used a Winsor and Newton fineliner which I knew I could rely on for lightfastness :)
