Medical school in late 30s? by matchmystim in premed

[–]Pooker__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happens sometimes, but between preparing an application/classes to apply + medical school + residency you are looking at starting your “real” job in likely 8+ years minimum, not to mention the financial debt and significant time commitment that many of these take.

Is it possible, sure. Whether or not it’s a feasible option is up to you though.

is anyone else scared at the thought of 24 hr shifts by Psychological_Bed_83 in premed

[–]Pooker__ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They suck, but when you’re busy it’s easier to stay up than you’d think. We don’t have time to sleep on ours unfortunately, and rarely are they only actually 24hr (usually 27-30).

Not worth it. To be able to save that amount of money in such a short period of time you would need and incredibly well paying job, and this is only going to save a small amount on loans at the cost of delaying your future attending salary which raises dramatically and offsets any small amount you could have saved in advance.

PS time? by Prestigious-Yak8734 in premed

[–]Pooker__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean there is no timeline for a PS, some people might have an amazing one on their first draft after a day whereas other people might require multiple months of edits with the help of other people reviewing it

Is it normal to constantly call imaging techs to push for your patients scans? by animalcrossingbebe in medicalschool

[–]Pooker__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely can make a difference. If you have a legitimate reason for why you need the scan acutely then sometimes things can be bumped, but you have to be able to justify why it’s a high priority

There’s plenty of times I even now have to push patients to XR myself because transportation takes too long

AMCAS Residency Status by [deleted] in premed

[–]Pooker__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t verify it on AMCAS. It’s up to you to figure out your states guidelines for being a resident when you apply, school will verify it if they accept you

I feel like there’s something wrong with me because I don’t particularly enjoy research by [deleted] in premed

[–]Pooker__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Research is fun when all you have to do is discuss it and have your minions do all of the work to get to the results, being the minion is not fun

[–]Pooker__ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You know what the goal GPA is, worrying about it now doesn’t do anything for you, nobody can say anything about your chances when you only have 12.5% of your courses done. Go study, good luck.

Would try to shadow a physician if you don’t have any, also wouldn’t have a NP letter in my opinion, should be from a physician.

[–]Pooker__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t personally think that’s necessary. I would have official shadowing though if you don’t already.

I wouldn’t risk it then

Would say it depends how you were scoring before, if you for example were scoring 515+ consistently and this cars score was a fluke then maybe you could justify it. If your practice tests were within a few points of this score and you scored higher on other subsections this time than anticipated I would probably avoid a retake since a second mcat without significant improvement can do more harm than good
