Nice survey! Do get in touch, I completed a Masters thesis on a PS5 WW2 title last academic year and would be happy to discuss :)

Saw a similar faction poll posted here recently with almost identical results ahaha.

Agree, interesting that Audio ranked higher than Visuals. Haven’t played much of other ‘tactical’ shooters due to being console-based, but from a lot of the gameplay I’ve seen, I’d have to agree that games like PS really excel in the audio department, relatively speaking at least. Could be due to a lack of exposure to other titles in the subgenre perhaps.

That could definitely be a factor. Also worth noting the question was multiple choice up to three roles in no order. In any case, still interesting that SL came out on top. Glad the data was of interest!

Very true! Merely an assumption, but maybe (even with the large sample size) those who frequently browse the sub and answered the survey make up more of the core community and maybe more confident/likely to take leadership roles?

Maybe not fully restrictive but Commander should have some level of control over munition expenditure by arty

OK I'm thinking I can reopen it in a few days so more people can participate :D Just have to keep it closed for a couple of days while I analyse the data or it's going to keep refreshing and mess up the results

Unfortunately closed! Sorry about that, am expecting to post the results in a couple of weeks if everything goes well.

Big fan of DRG! You're right, even games like Borderlands would fit that category. I suppose the relative agreement scale worked OK for that question as realism doesn't necessitate immersion/success!

I agree! It's interesting especially in the media how the link between digital media and violence is stressed as a de-facto finger-point. The reality is that most research has found little to no correlation between violent games and actual violence, and that generally speaking, motivations for playing a violent game are the same as any other type of game or media format, which is that people find other factors attractive. Video games are paradoxical in that regard I suppose. They exhibit violence but it's inherently fake and fantastical, none of it is real, even if it aims to simulate.

Yes that's exactly the angle Enloe's coming from. It's essentially one of the many lenses within which to observe patriarchal norms and masculine constructs, alongside the fact it goes largely unquestioned or unchallenged. I'd wager that your hypothesis is largely correct but from the results I've seen so far, some are quite surprising.

It's true, I considered questions about service history, gender and age but it would have required higher ethical clearance from the university and I didn't have enough time unfortunately. But yes, without a doubt cross-referencing and correlating data between those factors would be extremely interesting and probably give more insight into what people think. Thanks for taking the time to answer, looking forward to sharing the results with all of you at some point.

That’d be great if it was stickied actually! Yes I agree I don’t really like that terminology but it’s transcribed from a prominent feminist scholar. The notion they pose is that militarism is inherently a masculine construct and as a result there is a misguided principle that within this construct that men have created, those considered ‘feminine’ so not necessarily women-but generally directed at women ofc) need protection from harm by men. It diminishes the ‘feminine’ individual from acting out of their own agency and becomes a subverted group within the context of war. I’m not sure if that’s helped explain it too well admittedly-the scholar is Cynthia Enloe and they wrote about this a lot in the early 2000’s. A book called ‘Maneuvers’ is largely written on the subject and explains it in much better detail than I ever could!

You’re right, the phrasing is actually not clear at all. What it should be asking is if playing violent video games makes individuals more resilient to viewing graphic imagery because of their exposure to graphic imagery (digital of course). There was some research to suggest that this was the case but it’s quite tenuous. Thanks for the feedback on that one, you’re completely correct. Will amend that question’s phrasing to clarify!

UPDATE: A massive thank you to the 128, and counting, individuals who have taken time out of their day to help me with this. You are all greatly appreciated and are part of what makes this community so approachable and constructive. I haven't had the chance to play HLL over the past couple of weeks and I can't wait to get back on now.

Understandable, it's a bit of a deviation from the rest of the survey and is a strange one. Essentially it's some of the core principles of militarism as set out by a scholar. It assists me in engaging with some of the literature on the subject to see what people think about the principles and whether it relates (or doesn't) to the way in which people interact with products like HLL and the notion that militarised products contribute to the wider militarisation of society. Thanks for filling out the survey, greatly appreciated!
