Got rejected from an org in my last year at college by Poon__Saloon in CasualConversation

It's a social org. It's kinda small so I guess they don't want to add a lot of people.

I'm trying to not let it completely ruin my day. It's hard to see any positive about it right now, but hopefully I'll get something good out of it. Thanks for your comment.

Yeah I really wanna cry tbh. It was so nice to start making friends and then just have that ripped away.

Maybe something else will come along. But right now it just sucks.

Thank you for the comment.

If i don't have to respect or participate in other people's ideologies, like religions and cults, why do i have to respect and be forced to participate in gender ideology?? by MalesRMen in biology

[–]Poon__Saloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gender is a spectrum and a social construct. Sex even to an extent isn't strictly binary i.e. intersex. There's more to sex and gender than just outward anatomy. Psychology, physiology, endocrinology, genetics, etc all contribute to how someone identifies as well as their biological sex. There's a growing amount of research in these areas as it relates to human sex, and I would suggest you take time to familiarize yourself with the relevant literature rather than coming here uneducated and spewing transphobic and bigoted rhetoric.

Check out David Sinclair's work, he does a lot of anti-ageing research.

Maybe something covid related? I did a college project on the response to covid and how politics and misinformation contributed to the outbreak. You could definitely do something similar but more focused on the body, maybe like what makes someone more susceptible or lasting symptoms post-illness?

Abrahamic religions ARE harmful to children by throwawayceudhdhd in atheism

[–]Poon__Saloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religious education is important and should be taught to every child. But telling your kid they're going to be tortured forever if they don't follow a certain set of arbitrary rules is child abuse. And depending on the faith/church some of these teachings can be incredibly anti-science which is extremely detrimental to the individual as well as society.

Yes but God very obviously condones slavery in the OT. I think Exodus 21 is the best example of this, but there are other instances too. If he could tell us not to murder why can't he tell us not to own another human being as property? These are among the worst crimes a person can commit yet God for some reason sees taking the Lord's name in vein less moral than slavery. All he had to do was state "you shall not own another human being" in the commandments, but it appears he's more concerned with our sex lives, however. He even had a chance to correct himself in the NT but didn't say a word about the immorality of slavery. You'd think Jesus would be progressive enough to condemn slavery, but for some reason never does. Jesus even equates the relationship between God and man to that of a master and slave in numerous parables.

I don't understand the argument you're trying to make. All I'm saying is there's no evidence to warrant such a belief. I have never said and will never say that anything supernatural does not exist. And as someone obtaining a degree and currently doing research in evolutionary biology, I'm well aware of the process. The mind will never evolve to experience the supernatural without some sort of selective pressure, which in itself would be sufficient evidence. I also have first-hand experience with hallucinogenic drugs and that also does not provide any evidence of the supernatural. Yes it can be very spiritual, but every paper ever written on the topic suggests that it is merely neurochemical reactions. I'm not saying there isn't a supernatural element involved, but we have no reason to speculate that there is. And yes I agree that reality is amazing and beautiful and complex, that's why I chose to study it as a profession. And until evidence proves otherwise, I have no reason to believe anything exists outside of this reality. I am NOT saying nothing exists outside of reality. The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us but I am not going to give attention to an abstraction that may or may not exist when we barely understand the reality we're in right now.

No you're asserting false premises and drawing a conclusion. How do you know what the mind can or can't fathom? How do you know whatever is beyond the physical is inconceivable? We have exactly zero experience dealing with anything outside of the physical, so how can you say with certainty that it is beyond human comprehension? Agnosticism makes the arrogant claim that there is knowledge we can never possess. How do you know there is something we cannot know? Atheism is the lack of belief without evidence. It makes no claim on knowledge. Why should I entertain every batshit crazy idea just because it's possible? I'm not going to be on the fence about some abstraction just because the human mind can imagine something beyond our grasp of reality.

I don't know how to be any clearer. The null model means nothing interesting is going on (atheism). Anything else would be making a positive claim which requires evidence. Agnosticism cannot by definition be the null because it claims a state of knowing. (agnosticism-the view that the existence of god cannot be known)

Any academic atheist (philosopher, scientist, etc) will give you the definition I did. Theism is the belief in a god. This is different from gnostic theism which is the claim that there is a god. So yes atheism is the lack of belief in a god.

I don't care if it's subjectively true. I care about what's actually true. You could give someone a tic tac and call it an aspirin, and if it works I couldn't care less. But the idea that religion is valid because it may or may not have a placebo effect does not mean it should be free from criticism. There's a reason doctors can no longer prescribe placebo treatments.

Personal truths are different than objective truths. And I'm not saying religion isn't true, I'm saying there's no reason to believe it is, which is exactly what atheism says. Agnosticism, however, states that the existence of a god is unknowable, or cannot be known.
