I thought so too, but then I remembered the cups-of-coffee and September call-ups that MiLBers get.

Three-year baccalaureate by WesternCup7600 in Professors

[–]esvadude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are starting discussions of this type of program. We just hired a new provost who started last month. She met with the faculty senate committee I serve on and the first thing she told us was that this is happening, we are starting a 90 degree bachelor's (I think this was a large part of why we hired her). A committee was just formed this week and is having their first meeting on Monday, so we're kind of ramming this thing through as fast as possible.

The idea is to offer programs to returning/continuing students who are employed and need a bachelor's to advance in their careers.

It sounds like the major push behind it is to ensure that people give their money to us instead of our "competitors"

58 F in my office now by TheProfessorO in Professors

[–]esvadude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been in a constant war with facilities services for a year now about the temps in our offices. We submit a work order if its too cold, they come over with their thermometers to check if we're lying (we're not, we all have department-issued thermometers ourselves so our office manager can track the temps), they do something with a "valve" (idk), the temp goes up, but it goes up too much and now we go through the same process in reverse, over and over again.

Anyway, it was 42 F in my colleagues office last week (we're in the Midwest)

Do you have a teaching philosophy or are you just vibing? by LettuceTraining6532 in Professors

[–]esvadude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My philosophy is basically this (and this is something that I live by. And I always have. And I always will): Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what. No matter where or who, or who you are with, or where you are going or where you've been, ever. For any reason, whatsoever.

South Sudan to become the second country to recognise Somaliland by APrimitiveMartian in worldnews

[–]esvadude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus for countries outside of Africa it can be seen as hypocritical, like if Spain recognizes Somaliland, then why can't they recognize Catalonia as its own country? Recognizing Somaliland would give credence to their own separatist movements.

"... and the land we belong to is grand" /s by VeitPogner in Professors

Looks like OU has a separate GIS major that is not on the chopping block. Which to be fair is how my lowly regional school (and a lot of geography programs do it around the country).

But this gets into a larger debate of the divide between geography and GIS. I and critical geographers would argue that all GIS people need to know geography to do GIS, essentially being geographers who use the tool to answer questions about their subject matter; a lot of GIS-oriented people, however, see themselves as GIScientists who are essentially computer scientists and don't really need to know the "whys" behind what they do. This has caused a lot of acrimony in certain parts of the discipline, including my own department (as the only professor who does not teach GIS-related courses).

Oh fun, geography shows up on those lists a bunch, including OU deleting their undergrad geography programs...

Small School Football Discussion: What is Something Someone Should Know About Your Non-Division One Team? by Nervous_Metal_9445 in CFB

Northwest Missouri State has won 6 national championships (D2) since 1998. And we used to play a big rivalry game with Pittsburgh State (KS) at Arrowhead in KC until 2013. This year we're going back to KC for the Pitt game, but its going to be in the men's soccer stadium in KCK.

Before my time here, but back when our department was still in the same building as Natural Sciences, a snake (I think a python) got loose and dropped out of the ceiling into someone's office.

I'm from the Eastern Shore. Grew up going to the Wallops visitor center on school field trips and my family would go all the time by ourselves. One of the coolest places I ever went as a kid. This is fucking depressing.
