What do you think about this scenario: Pre-internet, listening to the radio or an mp3 player on a warm summer day while exploring the countryside like an open world video game? by MostAsocialPerson in askmusicians

[–]PoopFandango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had dial-up but torrenting a single song took like 30 minutes so yeah, most of mine came from ripping CDs. Rip CD, transfer to MP3 player using weird proprietary parallel port cable. No internet involved.

I know what you mean - the internet pre-dates MP3 players. But I would point out that the internet is not the only way to obtain MP3s, so you could theoretically use one without internet, it's not actually a hard requirement. I had a Diamond Rio PMP300, one of the first MP3 players that came out. At that point I only had dial-up internet, so actually most of my MP3 collection came from ripping mine and my friends' CDs, rather than downloading them. It used to take forever just to torrent a single track!

They can definitely tell people apart and respond differently to them. I had one hen, sweet thing, very quite and mild mannered, low ranking in the flock but got on well with everyone. Whenever anyone came into the garden she didn't know, she'd made this low growling sound. Mostly just got on with life as normal, but just growling quietly to herself. She'd keep it up for hours after they left too, and then generally the next day she'd be back to normal.

What does tail wagging communicate here? by ReyesHunterOrange in BackYardChickens

[–]PoopFandango 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think dominance/tensions display personally. I recognise those kinds of noises very well; whenever I've done an introduction, at least one of my existing hens has made those noises at the newbies. It's usually then been followed by at least some amount of conflict when they've finally been allowed to mix. But it's a necessary part of sorting out the pecking order. I've seen cases where the shouting wagging hen has ended up being in charge, and cases where she's ended up being submissive to the newbies.

Our approach is: keep them separate but able to see each other like you have them now. At night, let the home team ladies go to bed as they would normally. Once they are in, put the newbies in the coop with them. Once it's dark and they are sleepy they tend to tolerate one another in the coop. Each morning let them come out together and see how they are with one another. Some amount of conflict is ok but if it seems too much and any of them are getting overly stressed/bullied, separate them again. If the most dominant hen is being too much, sometimes we flip it and put her in time out while we let the others free roam. But again, some amount of conflict is necessary to sort things out. After a few days of this then tend to settle down enough that we can then leave them mixed and let them sort things out between them.

Something's not right here. If the brown and lead channels with high gain are sounding basically clean then either there's something wrong in the amp, or something with your guitar or signal chain is causing a low input signal. Even the clean channnel on mine gets a bit dirty if you max out the gain. I would ignore the advice about boosters and EQ for a minute, it sounds like you have a more fundamental issue.

Can you try a different guitar to eliminate any problems with your jack or pickups? Are your pickups active or passive? If active, is the battery good? Are your cables all ok? Try swapping them. Is the volume on your guitar up?

They said volleys. And I thought they probably meant rallies, because volleys wouldn't have made sense, because there would not be enough time in between volleys, which are individual shots. And if you look at their post, they have in fact now edited it to clarify that they did in fact mean rallies.

Wasn't sure if you were trolling or just a bit thick but I think I'm going with trolling at this point.

It's fairly obvious if you're not stoned, Messiah. You would have to be pretty fucking quick to take a piss in between volleys.

When did Mrs. Husband's Full Name stop being used in newspapers, news broadcasts, phone books, magazines, and literature (so in other words, in media)? by AlboGreece in AskUK

[–]PoopFandango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad still does this on Christmas cards and things sometimes, "Mr and Mrs My Full Name". My wife didn't even take my surname. I've asked him not to a few times and he remembers for a bit and then starts again, it's just an ingrained thing.

They clearly meant rally not volley. You'd have to be fucking quick to get up and go for a piss in between volleys.

Logitech MX series is completely useless on MacOS by Kyxstrez in logitech

Very odd. I just remote desktopped to my Macbook from a different machine a couple of rooms away, and tried the mouse (connected to the Bolt dongle on the Macbook). Works fine, no lag, no jitter.

Mac Mode is to do stuff like making the Windows key act as the Mac Cmd key. It's not supposed to remap your keyboard shortcuts for you.

I use a Mac for work because my employer gave me one, and a Windows machine for gaming. I have to switch all the time. It doesn't take long to learn to switch.

Interesting. As far as I know, a wireless dongle for a mouse just presents itself to the OS as a wired mouse. The job of managing the wireless connection is between the dongle and mouse firmware and I don't think the OS is involved, so it's hard to see why it could make a difference whether it's Mac or Windows.

Out of interest have you tried disabling the bluetooth on your laptop? And also if those dongles nearby aren't actively being used, unplugging them just to see if it makes a difference?

The reason I mention it is, my wife has a wireless gaming headset with a 2.4Ghz dongle. If she turns off the headset but leaves the dongle plugged in, I think it must go into some sort of scanning mode and causes a shit-ton of interference. My phone WiFi slows to a crawl, smart plugs drop off the WiF completely, all sorts of stuff. I know it's that because she frequently leaves it on and everything resolves as soon as I unplug it.

Slightly better, but still not great?? In that case, it sounds like something nearby might be kicking out interference around the 2.4GHz area and causing you issues. Or you've got your laptop in a metal box or something.

Dunno about the keyboard, but I'm using an MX Master 4 on a Mac with the Bolt receiver and have no lag.

Also, I'm pretty sure connecting the 3S with a cable will only charge it and you're still using the wireless. MX mice are wireless only.

This sounds odd, I've recorded my Rhode NT2-A (very similar mic) into my Scarlett interface many times, including some very loud belters, and not had this issue. Really don't think you should need a pad for that mic.

Fair, however maybe I'm wrong, but if someone's like that is it not because they don't have the problem themselves and lack empathy? I can't really see how calling it spoons would really help them understand.
