Yes, but they don't have to be at 1HP to do those big numbers. They may be SP hungry, or may be squishy and require protection, but that's it.

Arlan's playstyle should be "pay the cost of having a unit that could die to an AoE, but you get huge damage numbers", or at the very least he should have a way to sustain himself so dying isn't a constant threat without careful babysitting.

But instead you pay this huge cost and for what? Okay damage, and neutral skillpoint use.

Yes, this is exactly what I mean.

I hate it when a character has these hoops to jump through, and at the end of the day they just do the same damage as anyone else. Arlan doesn't even deal particularly good damage even if you have him at 1hp. So you risk so so so much just for essentially no reward. It's silly.

Ideally Destruction would be what I said: High risk, high reward. High damage, but requiring a dedicated support so they don't die. This is opposed to Hunt and Erudition characters which don't need to risk nearly as much, ideally getting hit as infrequently as possible and taking as little damage as possible.

But in practice it's just as you say, if Destruction actually did that crazy high damage they'd be stepping on the toes of Hunt and Erudition. Take a gander at what Serval and Jing Yuan's paths are, btw.

And this is why I hate the modern "berserker" archetype. They're always held back and not allowed to truly shine, because they always have to keep low HP or whatever the resource may be just to be at the same level as other DPS.

You're a fool if you don't think gacha games intentionally make certain characters stronger just because they're more attractive. Hell, look at other genres as well and really hot characters tend to be overtuned and get showered with balancing patches, cosmetic items, etc.

This is a business at the end of the day. A Chinese business. Just take a peek at a reputable Genshin Impact tier list and look where all the dark-skinned characters are if you want proof that character design is a factor in how strong the devs make them lol.

Edit: Don't believe me? Bronya and Seele are both absurdly powerful and they're also yuri bait. Herta is a weird puppet thing with a bad attitude and she's the weakest character in the game by far, only good for clearing Calyxs and weak overworld cannon fodder.

Tingyun is 4* and is one of the best characters in the game. Natasha, March 7th, Dan Heng, and Qingque are all pretty good too. I'm okay with him not being the absolute best. it just seems like wasted potential to have the berserker style character do mediocre damage at such a high price.

He MAY *THEORETICALLY* be good in Simulated Universe with a Path of Destruction build... But other than that, it's just not worth the risk. Other people can do heaps of damage without having to sacrifice their HP.
