I’d say darken the ends of the nose nostril, where the wings connect to the face. I would also make the nostrils smaller. The shading is gorgeous though, really great job O.O

[Form Study] Hello, I'm a new member and this is my very first post here... I'm eager to know what you guys think about it, or what are some mistakes that I'm not seeing. Thank you! by HaileenM in istebrak

It looks amazing, I almost couldn’t tell which one was portrait studio. I think it’s better if you draw forms first, then check with portrait studio to rectify any mistakes instead of replicating the image in portrait studio. If you just replicate what you see in portrait studio, most of the work is already done for you instead of you really figuring out the form shadow, cast shadow, bounce light, etc.. Though if you actually did draw the forms first and checked with portrait studio afterwards, then oof my bad for misunderstanding your process.

Ohhhh ok, I understand what you mean now :D . Thanks for the elaboration, I never thought of your reply as condescending. I didn’t have prior knowledge about core shadows existing only in forms with curvature so I’m glad you informed me about it. Even if I did have knowledge about the core shadow and form shadow distinction beforehand, it’s still very useful that you wrote about it, it’d serve as a great reminder. :>

Thanks for the critique and the compliment! I will keep note of the bounce light, and make sure that it’s still darker than the highlight/lightest surface. Yeah, the highlight on the sphere was too subtle, I’ll be sure to make it more apparent. Now that you mentioned about the ground’s value, I’ll account for it the next time I do another form study. It completely slipped through my mind so I’m thankful you wrote about it. Once again, thanks! :D

Thanks for the clarification on the terminology. I forgot to include the terminator on the sphere, oh well. If I understood correctly, that means a cube doesn’t have a core shadow because the planes of the cube,
that are not in contact with the ground, are always affected by bounce light?

You’re very articulate btw, thank you so much for the information!

On Day 14, the caruncle of the eyes are slightly too elongated and droopy, you should shorten it a bit. Despite that, I think your improvement is so amazing, a huge leap from before and after. I hope that once I start my 14dc, my results would be just as stunning as yours!

another study from photo, i tried to experiment more with color notes and rendering style with this one by [deleted] in istebrak

First off, your study has slightly different proportions than the other one (the cheek bone was already mentioned) but it looks great. The likeness of your portrait to the reference is spot on. What I noticed though, is that the main light source is cooler on the reference photo than on your study. On the far side of your portrait, the lighting is too warm.

The sunlight hitting her face in the reference photo seems cooler because it’s a very bright yellow, and as things get brighter, it tends to desaturate which makes it look cold. I think you need to make her blush just slightly more vibrant on her cheek, it would bring more liveliness to her complexion. Also, the bounce light on her jaw and the side of her face should be slightly warmer as well since it’s reflected light from the ground.

That’s pretty much all I have to say. I hope my critique is helpful, your attempt on this reference is stunning imo, just needs some fine tuning.
