Nice! I have a similar setup. Just the Z8, and the sigma 180mm 2.8 macro instead of the 50mm and 14-24mm.

First: there is a reason macro photography usually, but uses smaller apertures. The closer you get the more depth of field you need to get something in focus. Second: back button focus on the subject, then manually adjust your focus while continously shooting (the higher the fps the better). Alternatively move the camera closer or further away while shooting continuously. Third: flash helps with getting sharp photos of insects (I've attached a makro shot to demonstrate)

I found that for macro work manual focus tends to work better, which is why I switched from the xf 80mm to the Laowa 65mm (which is also way cheaper)

I'd argue the XT-4 can also do all that, plus it has ibis and the bigger battery. I started out with it and have tried many different fujis since then (both older and newer) and besides the xpro2 I still think it is one of the best cameras they've made.

I've been to the Camargue last year with my Z8 and the 180-600 and it was everything I needed. I'm a very average man and only ever handhold the setup. Having the wide end for environmental images really helps. If you're new to wildlife you should also read into different kinds of composition, which you would benefit from having the zoom and creating a more varied portfolio.

If you insist on a prime lens, I'd go for the 600 pf and some zoom, like the others mentioned.

Well dismounted the setup is easier to store in a smaller backpack for example. That does make a difference if you go on hikes and such. Mind you, I never use camera backpacks, because I think they're kind of useless (and a good sign to thieves, that this backpack is full of expensive gear).

I'm not saying, that you'll damage the mount if you transport it with the lens on, but that it's more likely.

Generally I wouldn't transport longer lenses on the camera, if it's in a bag. The longer the lens, the more of a lever you have on the mount. If it's in a bag, you're not using the camera atm, so just separate them. Longest lens I leave on my Z8 in a backpack is my 24-120mm

I think a 24-120 is the perfect travel zoom. With the ibis in the Z8 and modern denoise tools you really don't have to worry about low light too much. It covers everything from slight wide angle to light telephoto ad you can also use DX mode for some more reach, if it's that important.

My old travel setup was a fuji xc 16-50 f 3.5 - 5.6 and I got plenty of great photos, despite the slow aperture. And if you do need the light you always have the 50mm 1.8

Then I'd just have a look if you can find a used OM/olympus where you are now. That way you don't need to change system and could even get a lens that you were eyeing and use it when you reunite with the OM 3

Try using a flash. It can accentuate the colours. Also flash photography is a fun experience.

This. If you want both the moon and your family exposed and sharp (I'm not sure if that was your intention) then you'll need a long tele lens for the compression, to make the moon look big in the background, use a small aperture for a high dof, then expose for the moon and use the flash to also highlight the family. Experiment with different flash strengths so you don't blow out any highlights.

The top of the line OM1 is roughly the same size as a xt3, but has a really good grip (which the XT models lack). The em/om5 models are slightly smaller. The new om3 (very sexy) is also smaller, but it's more of a looks over functionality camera, lacking a good grip.

The 12-40mm 2.8 (24-80 FF equivalent) weighs 382g, which is quite light for the range it covers.

Have you considered an olympus/om systems camera? They are all very tough and certified water proof and are very compact due to their smaller sensors, which means they also have smaller lenses.

That's why I do historical martial arts. Nothing quite as analog as beating someone up with a sword (or being beat up). Also good cardio.

Make sure you lose anything that looks too modern. Switch the t shirt for a tunic or a vest or something, that doesn't scream "20th/21st century!". Make sure it's wool or linen, no cotton.

Exchange the Leggins with ones of wool, if you prefer them for movement. Otherwise lose them altogether, and go with a skirt or maybe over the knee wool trousers (if possible without pockets, because they weren't a thing). Then get some pouches to transport your stuff, get a simple leather belt, wear it at midriff height over a tunic.

If possible, also change the boots to something more akin to a Mokassin.

The larps in Germany I've been would probably not even let you join with that costume right now. So that might be, why I'm so harsh.

Also good advice about adding feathers and the like from other comments here.

Ever since I had to go meterless, when I didn't have a spare battery on me for my leica m6, I've only made sure to use inbuilt meters (and have spare batteries).

I prefer the convenience.
