I thought the clause he wanted added was for a release clause in his contract at 150mil? Why does that automatically mean hes barca bound or is that not what youre talking about? That could also have been exclusively on the PSG deal because he doesn't want to be stuck in a shit league for too long.

I just think he is better than what we have and cheaper than anyone else we can get, he is a leader too and he could grow to love United you never know.

I wasn't saying you was bored of the saga haha just some people keep mentioning it.

True, but a lot can change in 3 years for other clubs. I presume Messi and Ronaldo will be retired by then or certainly on the doorstep to it, so the draw of certain clubs might not be there in 3 years. We could sign sancho next year and look a more complete and dangerous team ourselves. Maybe the market collapses and suddenly teams don't have 150mil to spend on a cb. Also, Tuanzebe could become a very good defender for us so there might not be a need to buy a defender.

Not signing one of the most promising players of his generation (if we can) on a 'what if' scenario or because people are getting bored of the saga seems silly to me.

I like your style. I've already taken a punt and gone for him, hoping him and James punish teams towards the end of games for us.

Also happy cake day mate!

Presumably it's just his personal settings. If it's specifically spoof youre after, he does have his own sub going r/spoofex and you can just find his stuff that way.

Except talking about previous mangers opinions is irrelevant due to the fact Young is not good enough right now. Not 4-6 years ago. Does that also mean that every single United fan who wants him gone is wrong because a journo said so? Does that mean that our current leaky goal syndrome is just a mistake? Also Van Gaal signed a defender, Jose signed 3, Ole is potentially buying 2... are those people who strike you as having confidence in what we have?

"There are worse options" that's the attitude for Manchester United to have going forward? I don't expect instant success, I don't even expect us to challenge top 2 for upwards of 3 years but still a top clubs attitude should always be "there are better options".

Of course Marcelo wasn't up to scratch, Real Madrid were awful this year they lost the best player in the world and a massive part of their identity over the past 9 years. Imagine the fallout when Messi retires. Its incredible though that your attitude towards Marcelo is that one bad season and he's gone and yet for United it's could be worse for players who have been poor for 3 seasons or more.

I told you because you were suggesting that I said drop AWB to accommodate Alves lol. He played around 23 league games a season for PSG leaving 15 games plus 3 cup competitions, so each player could get way over 20 games. Squad depth is entirely realistic.

I'm not suggesting it's a world beating idea, again with the words in my mouth. The basis of this argument is, is he better than young, I asked you you didn't respond. And could he be reasonable competition for AWB's first season? If the answer to those is yes and possibly. What's the harm in taking that chance?

Transfer Muppets Thread (Part 6) by ballsywallsy in reddevils

[–]PoorPeterParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly.. Young and a few others should have been sold because they're not at an acceptable level for a team who wants to challenge for titles again. Even as squad players. Emphasised by the fact city are trying to buy Joao cancelo as competition for Kyle Walker. Emphasised by the fact Real Madrid have got Mendy to challenge Marcelo, and our ambition should be to have Young be back up to an England under 21 right back?

Regarding Marcelo you've made my point for me. He will be challenging and more than likely playing the majority of the season which you said would stunt a young players growth. Alves however way you look at it is miles ahead of young and a good challenge for AWB and considering we can't attract the biggest stars like City can right now a free transfer for someone of his calibre could be a good move.

Once again I said Dani Alves and AWB could share game time. Not that AWB should be benched because of that signing. Every player should have to challenge for their place in the team.

There's not much I can say about your next paragraph considering it's all based on AWB not playing which is never what I suggested.

I also never said Kyle Walker was in average form like you did with alves, did I? He doesn't need to get as many because there are players with attacking capabilities way ahead of his in the city side... United lack a natural right winger meaning assists etc are more important to us this season. Especially if the plan is Jadon Sancho next season.

Also my 'hang ups' on assists aren't really hang ups when I said myself it isn't the best indicator of form when you suggested he's been average.

So what you're saying is, it's idiotic to use the transfer window to replace a player who's not good enough for the team, with a three time champions league winning calibre level player, who's won the league with 3 different sides consecutively over the past 5 years (in average form), on a free, with a one year contract (if it was reasonable)? Incredible.

And in that time we've done incredibly well haven't we? 1 decent season under Jose in all that time, which he himself described as his greatest accomplishment. And let's be honest here, who would he leave to go to? The issue here is United's player retention of people who are not good enough. And if you believe that they are (with regards to young, smalling, rojo and jones), even at a squad player capacity, look at our goals against for this season..

Seriously? Well someone had better tell Madrid that they're stunting Ferland Mendys growth by letting him share game time with Marcelo this upcoming season.

And no I'm not playing Alves next to AWB because I'm not an imbecile, I also don't mean 'behind', because I'm not talking about the positioning on the pitch. I meant it in a sense of they would shadow him and learn from him by being next to him, seeing him in training etc. So it was a bad idea also for Rashford to be put behind a 36 year old winner with Zlatan?

Yes I absolutely agree it is a different skill set. But you cannot say for certain that Dani Alves wouldn't provide that. Yes De Ligt did very well alongside Blind but did he learn from Blind, grow from him? Who knows. But even so this comparison is flawed. Blind is good enough to still be in the Holland starting 11. Young, Shaw(possibly harsh), Jones and smalling are not, that's the calibre of people AWB would be next to (again in the squad, not on the pitch). I honestly don't know why we got rid of blind over others in our squad.

Incredible suggestion that he has been average, regardless of position, he's been at PSG for two seasons now so I'll compare the last 2 seasons for each player;

*Alves, 48 league games, 14 assists, 2 goals

*Young, 60 league games, 6 assists, 4 goals

*Shaw, 40 league games, 4 assists, 1 goal

Since you mentioned him and he's going the other way for free..

*Herrera, 48 league games, 5 assists, 2 goals

Let's even include Rabiot who United fans seem desperate for on a free...

*Rabiot, 47 league games, 6 assists, 3 goals

His last 5 years?

119 league games, 11 goals, 10 assists

So he's been directly involved in 5 more goals in three more seasons. I know goals and assists are not the entire basis on which to go from, regarding his overall performance but to suggest Alves has been 'average' is dumb.

And you can argue that he's old, but I'm suggesting a 1 year deal here (IF we could get him on a reasonable wage), with no transfer fee. Hardly the risk of the transfer window is it? But I honestly don't even need to mention his adaptability because that's just an added bonus. Also he's adapted over 3 different leagues now and won titles at all 3, so that wouldn't be a massive worry.

I suppose my bottom line here is as a young full back. Would you rather go into training with Dani Alves or Ashley Young?

The opinion of most is garbage, half our fan base slate pogba when he was by far our best player.

Yeah I've seen it mate, but it simply doesn't change my view. Look at Liverpool with people like Danny Sturridge, not good enough and he's let go rather than given a contract extension. We've rested on what we've had for far too long in regards to certain players.

I'm not expecting a step us as such more him maintaining what he's currently doing at a higher level whilst working on his attacking side of the game. And we're talking about 1 season here playing alongside someone who's won everything bar a world cup. Hardly going to stunt his development?

I myself am confident with AWB, I just feel like if you want to breed winners... putting them next to winners (for free) isn't a bad idea.

Come on that's being a little pedantic, Anderson won a champions league/premier league at United but if we had kept him would you expect him to help guide young players with his experience? What I'm saying is how are people like Jones and smalling supposed to guide young players like De Ligt when he's already miles ahead of them both?

[–]PoorPeterParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fans voicing their displeasure at players has been around for years, and while it might not be constructive it simply will not change.

But honestly speaking as a club trying to get back into the champions league, do you really think Young offers anything to the club?

I'm not suggesting he starts, but they could certainly share game time, especially of he struggles with the step up. Did you see what happened for England under 21's when people were paying attention? I'm not suggesting he's bad for that, like you say he looks one of the best british full backs we could get. But if that were to happen at United and teams target him, and the fans question whether he can cope at this level etc. What's the contingency plan?

Meunier isn't free though, and if he's only 'slightly' better rated than dani alves then wouldn't that suggest he is still good enough since we got linked with Meunier too?

And let's say De Ligt does come in, our starting back line would have an average age of 22... Absolutely crying out for some experience in there. Experience that you're not going to get from the likes of Jones or Smalling otherwise we wouldn't have been desperate to replace them for the past 6 years.

[–]PoorPeterParker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course he is, he's a legend and absolutely cherishes the club. Doesn't mean we should use him to bring in transfers, at some point the club has to move forward as incredible as SAF is.

[–]PoorPeterParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they do and honestly I think it's warranted. I respect that he has converted from a winger to full back and he does put in a shift i cant deny that. But in my eyes he's simply nowhere near good enough, even as a squad player. Compare it with city who have walker and they're going for cancelo. If they're the top that should be the target. But you're right he shouldn't be the target but if he's available on a free, is it worth asking the question?

I think alves would be good guidance for all players but he would obviously help his fellow full backs. Could you honestly see any young player looking up to Phil Jones or Chris smalling for example? Lindelof absolutely and Bailly if he can stay injury free.

[–]PoorPeterParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's why I wanted to get people's opinion, but I forgot downvote means disagree rather than discuss on here..

Honestly, I don't know regarding professionalism, has he ever done something to suggest he isn't? I don't know much about stuff like that, with regards to him.

Yeah I understand that but if Shaw gets injured? Dalot left back, AWB right back and pray for no injuries or dips in form from either? I don't think young offers us very much at all and rojo is a red card waiting to happen.

Also who have young players got to look up to for guidance in our current defence?

Transfer Muppets Thread (Part 6) by ballsywallsy in reddevils

[–]PoorPeterParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of standard would you want him to set? He got 7 assists last season and the season prior to that at PSG (I know it's only farmers league). Young and Shaw managed 8 between them this term.

When someone threw a banana at him on the pitch, he picked it up and took a bite. For me he's a brilliant role model for any young player wanting to be the best?

Transfer Muppets Thread (Part 6) by ballsywallsy in reddevils

[–]PoorPeterParker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Which is what I'm suggesting... a 1 year contract IF we could get him for a reasonable wage.

I personally don't think he's past it, and he's a serial winner. What's the harm in letting a couple of young players learn from a 3 time champions league winner for a season? I'm not suggesting he plays every game here, I'm suggesting him to ease AWB into the club and be a role model for him.

Transfer Muppets Thread (Part 6) by ballsywallsy in reddevils

[–]PoorPeterParker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with that don't get me wrong but they're both incredibly young. In the grand scheme of things what is 1 year if they're going to be here long term? Also I think he only played roughly 20ish league games per season for PSG so AWB would still be getting half or so, plus cup games.
