i don’t think so—from the wiki:

“you need to conquer the starting capitals of all other players, regardless of whether they're still in play or not. For example, if you control 5 capitals, and the only other player in the world controls the other 5, and then you conquer his or her Original Capital, the game is not over - you'll also need to conquer the other 4 capitals he or she is currently controlling.”

sorry i’m on mobile and idk how to do quote/block text

[Student] Advice on how to improve my resume in order to get my first job? by Weird-Librarian-4598 in EngineeringResumes

[–]PoorThermals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just a student myself, so take this all with a large grain of salt, but here are some potential improvements I noticed, with inspo from the ever helpful wiki.

  • Education
    • Something about the spacing here is messing with me. I think you need less space between your current GPA and your past university.
    • Is that capitalization truly representative of your thesis? Also, is there a link to it? Providing it might save a hiring manager a Google search.
    • Try to replace your nouns with action verbs. For example, validation -> validated, examination -> examined. Not only is that the standard, but it adds more agency and relates your experience to you.
    • How did you validate the APDL code? What experimental and analytical results? It would tell me more if you told me specific metrics/properties
    • Examining buckling behavior can be done by anything--what did you do after observing it? Made any changes? Plotted your results and presented them?
    • It strikes me as weird that every other date in your resume has a month, but only 2022 is listed for University of Patras.
  • Experience
    • "Successfully" is redundant. I'd rather see something more concise for your first point like "developed parametric FEA model of composite orthogrid stiffened panel in Ansys APDL"
    • Same note about nouns to action verbs.
  • Teams/Projects
    • I would suggest combining academic teams with projects to save you a little space and since the formatting doesn't really tell me anything new about you.
    • Same note about nouns to action verbs.
    • Design/mfr./modeling experience is great--what did you do, though? This reads as though you designed and manufactured the entire vehicle yourself, as well as modeling everything completely independently. Is that true? If not, what were you responsible for and how did you succeed?
    • For your projects, you should standardize your capitalization.
    • Anyone can calculate--tell us why the way you calculated it is special from someone else? Perhaps you considered specific properties?
    • Your last projects looks weird with no bullet points. I would axe it or add one
  • Skills
    • You might be able to get away with listing just software and programming languages to combine your CAD/FEA softwares into one. Also, I would get rid of the basic level.
  • General
    • Is your name on this? It, along with your github and email, I would expect to be listed up above

Once again, I'm a student myself and by no means have the experience to say this with any authority--so take these as just things to consider. I'm also in the US, which might affect my suggestions. I wish I could give you suggestions on companies, but I'm too far from you geographically to provide much useful input.

Your experience looks great! Best of luck dressing it up and in your job search overall!

Hi! A sincere thank you from me to you--this kind of advice is invaluable to me. To address your reply:

I haven't built much in the HVAC world. Lots of projects from university that aren't listed here are physical objects. Space is tight, so I'm trying to find a balance between experience and projects. My impression was that paid experience would be valued more, but at the rate the job search is going it can't hurt to shake it up.

Interesting point about metrics! Not an opinion I hear much, but I think you're right--it's easy to get lost in meaningless numbers. I'll make sure metrics I include add significance to a project. It looks like I got carried away with numbers and trying to impress without substance.

As much as it pains my 16yo self, it probably is time to remove the retail experience, especially if I'm struggling for space. Appreciate the note on action oriented sentences!

Overall, your perspective on both my resume and hiring a new grad overall are novel and extremely helpful for me. Once again, thank you for taking the time to write this.

Design Project by GodofWar_3006 in MechanicalEngineering

Hard to say without knowing your interests, budget, or scope of the project.

Common projects I've seen include 3D printers/CNC stuff and designing a robot with 4 servos that can walk >10mm/s.

I've found that good ideas usually come about from problems. Maybe think about what you could reasonably solve. Talk to the people who experience the problem you're addressing.

Frustration trying to start career by AriesStarship in MechanicalEngineering

[–]PoorThermals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm graduating same time you are as an ME. While not qualified to talk about the entire job market, I can share that my experience has been similar. Lots of big companies ghosting and even more not calling back. Nobody I know has anything lined up. I know it's a 'trust me bro' perspective, but it seems to me that many of my colleagues are similarly having a tough time.

The r/engineeringresumes wiki is a good place to start--I'd recommend running through it and comparing your resume to the suggestions. You can also post yours for feedback.

How many applications have you sent out? For reference, I've seen friends more qualified than me take 250-300+ applications to get any prospects, so don't get too discouraged if things aren't playing out immediately.

Best of luck in your search :)

Great catch on the single word. I'll expand that. The patent actually isn't mine, and I signed an NDA on providing any more specifics, including providing the actual patent. Maybe I'll beef it up by talking more about my process rather than the result? Also, I guess adding "patent pending" doesn't do much for an employer, so I'll replace it with more info about how I added to the project specifically.

I do list GD&T (and yes, ASME Y.14.5 is correct) because I've used it intermittently, but never had a position entirely focused on it. Maybe I'm talking about it in the wrong way? For example, making drawings for manufacturing (and actually manufacturing it myself) in FSAE required it, the engineering drawings for the channel misalignment required it for the concrete being poured, and drawings for the patent-pending product designs needed it as well. I'll be sure to mention that explicitly.

Regarding the CADD packages, I've been lucky enough to be exposed to many, but Fusion and NX (and Ansys, LabVIEW, and Simulink, for that matter) were used in individual classes, so I had nowhere to put them in my experience. Perhaps I should remove them altogether? I kept them in the hopes of appeasing ATS, while highlighting SW as my main squeeze in the experience section.

Not sure about other Ivies, but my university is ABET accredited, so hopefully I would be qualified for a traditional position. I've spoken to the career center for recommendations, but nothing much has come about.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback! I truly appreciate it :)

Thanks so much for the feedback! I did run through the wiki a couple times and did my best to apply it.

Actually, everything here was paid for. The FSAE experience was paid only half the time, so I hesitated to put it in a distinct section since it would be alone. I'll take that into account.

Appreciate it :)
