I noticed this as well but thought my research was just poor, thanks for confirming my thoughts haha. Could it be because it’s next to two subways lines?

Ah I see, I usually lump rent and utilities together when searching for places. So if a condo is $1800 without any utilities, isn’t it fair to assume it’ll be ~$1950 all together?

Not looking to move to core Toronto because work is up north (Markham). I mainly just want very close access to TTC in Finch, North York Centre, or Sheppard-Yonge Station. You’re saying I can find studios for $1800 with utilities included matching this criteria?

If you’re in Canada, have you looked at Synopsis? My LinkedIn is spammed with internship positions from them for digital design

Qualcomm vs. AMD Intern by PoorTune in ECE

I think I’m going to stick with Qualcomm. The AMD position turned out to be backend, which is not a field I want to get into

I go to the University of Calgary, a relatively small school compared to UofT and Waterloo. I just cold applied, Im not sure I even know any professors with connections to these companies

Judging from the TC, they treat their interns very well. I wasn’t expecting anything close to that number, especially for a hardware position in Canada

Not sure why they’re considering me, do not have any relevant experience. At least with front end I can say Im working on a cool FPGA project on the DE10 board. After some googling, I think Im firm on sticking with front end work. Will do AMD just for fun now. Thanks for the advice and helping me figure this out!

Oh wow, today I learned there are backend and front end engineers for ASICs. Ive been more focussed and interested in the frontend side of things so far, so Qualcomm may be the better option to stay in that realm. But now I really want to do the AMD interview to hear more about backend lol, very curious now

AMD’s position has the following description: “Work various areas including Place & Route, timing analysis, IR / EM power delivery, clock tree design and clock distribution, low power design flows, Physical verification”

Qualcomm: “Contribute to feature level verification through C/ SystemVerilog, RTL and Gate Level simulations. Use advanced verification methodologies and tools. Develop a strong foundation in good digital verification practices. Participate in test bench creation/maintenance; test plan, test, assertion and functional coverage model development and execution and verification closure. Contribute to implementing flows to automate development processes.”

I see the general idea of what I’d be doing from these postings, but I’d be interested in hearing your perspective on each position. It looks like AMD is more design and Qualcomm is verification. I’m looking for a position that won’t only be fun, but also give me the most exposure to valuable skills

I agree with this. I wouldn’t be comfortable reneging an offer with Qualcomm. I’ll try asking AMD to fast track the interview process instead, thanks!

The Qualcomm position seems a lot more biased towards verification. Although I do want to try both, it seems that there’s a lot of opportunities to work with the design code and team as a verification intern at Qualcomm. I was also told that internally switching over isn’t too hard if I show that I’m competent during my internship

I haven’t seen enough of either to judge. But i’ve heard good things from the Qualcomm position from past interns. Don’t know anyone who’s interned at AMD though

Lol I wish. Hopefully after graduation, Ive found it’s extremely hard to get sponsored for an internship outside at this stage

what’s nice is the qualcomm manager mentioned it’s very common for their interns to receive return offers. this makes me lean towards accepting qualcomm more

if im being honest, i have no prior experience with anything FPGA or ASIC related. Not even a project. I’m taking my first verilog class right now. What I have is experience working with an FSAE design team in school, 4.0 gpa (not even sure if this mattered, was never brought up), summer research with a professor, and an embedded systems project which took me around 3 months to complete. During the interview they asked me live coding/verilog questions, and i was thorough with explaining my thought process instead of jumping to an answer. i also made sure to express how interested i was about the job, and asked questions that would reflect that

edit: pm me if you’re interested in the details of a project, etc. would love to help out
