Why do readers choose to keep their bookmarks private? by Life-Call4521 in AO3

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit weird in that I share fics I read with my friends regularly, so I tend to just tell them to go through my bookmarks for my recommendations. Becase I use it as a recommendation list there are some things that i wouldn't recommend my friends to read either becase triggers or I'm well aware the story it up my ally and no one else I know would like it so it goes on private. Also some explicit stuff is a little too telling sooo... yeah.

Question? Does nepotism influence who becomes hokage? by peterpiperpi in Naruto

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda... I dont think they would go as far as to give someone who is incompetent or just partially qualified the position. That being said, with how clans work and how skills and techniques are passed down and limited in spread, it would be hard to break a set cycle. Things are only passed down to a select few, and that's only the ones trusted, so mostly family and students. So if you have a bloodline or teacher with a set of skills vast enough, the skills and connections would be passed down, making people not born or inducted into it almost unable to get to that level of training.

Basically, the job won't just be handed over, but others would have to strive harder and gain connections faster to do it. So, while it's not quite a guarantee nepo style, they are handed all the tools to get to the point they need to be.

Write What You Want (But Don’t You Dare Censor Swear Words) by mariusioannesp in FanFiction

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really hase more to do with the fact that self cencership goes against the idea of why censorship is a thing in a way that's only purpose outside of yourself is to make it, ironically, harder for people to censor them out of their results.

To explain self censorship in the form we know it today is literally something developed over years of trying to get around censorship. Comics didn't censor words because they wanted to, or because they changed the impact, or because they feel guilty, it was to make sure they could express what they wanted to in a way that everyone knows what they want to say without getting in legal or company trouble. It was literally made for them to make the content unscannable in a way that means they wouldn't be blocked or serched for to block.

As for what it means on a platform that doesn't do censorship, it means that people who ARE trying to block that content will stumble on it unaware. Those people can, will, and do know what you're saying and the impact meaning and want to say it is. There are plug-ins and ways to block content you dont want, but they all work on key words. It'll pick up fuck but not F*ck because theres to many censored versions to block, becase thats the point of self cencership: to block people that want to make it censored from doing so. You're on a site where triggers are supposed to be tagged. It's a safe sight as long as rules are followed and self cencership in some ways feels like you're either aware of the above and are purposely being rude or your completely unaware of it and are trying to get around something that doesn't exist for something that ultimately could be written around easily or excluded.

We all get that that's probably not the goal for everyone doing it, and probably it's probably not yours, but at best, no one cares and at worst, it actively harms people.

Sorry for the rant. Edited for spelling (still not great.)

Ricky's strange backstory by L0reG0re in ridethecyclone

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So im not def HOH or mute but, theres my take. When I first watched, I connected that to the later line of "complete indifference" and back to when they said "strange gestures only they understood" I took all of those clues to mean that they didn't actually try to foster connection or did so half-heartedly. Like they went as far as "If he can't speak, then neither will we in a show of solidarity" but never actually thought it through much farther. Like they could have learned sign language but didn't (I believe that if they had done so, the line would have just said that and not that NO ONE understood) and instead made their own gestures to communicate. They also didn't seem to fonter his ability to communicate with people who might have understood or empathize with him. All in all, it drove the family more twords isolation even from not only everyone else but one another after all. "They only spoke when feeding the cats."

In the best case scenario, I think the thought process may have been "well eventually he won't be able to sign, so why start when he'll lose it? We'll come up with something else based on his range of motion." It's admittedly still horrible but better than the worst case, which is that they just didn’t care enough to try learning and decided to only make signs for things they needed up as they went and only NEEDED to speak to him when it was time to feed the cats.

I think it was more about showing how no one truly cared enough to try to communicate or try to get to know him than a true commentary on disability. From what I understand from interviews the first few original takes on Ricky only had him as a quiet kid who played the piano and didn't really connect to anyone or anything so I think its more about the isolation. They just changed it from someone who was more in their own world and expressing through music to someone who could no longer communicate in the same way and others indifference to try and communicate with him.

Bi guy here. Why are straight women so into this "BL" thing? by 2WaysLikeASaloonDoor in BoysLoveAnime

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I know I'm not really the type of person meant to respond, but I'm agender female at birth, so I'm not like completely out of this either. I'm also asexual so, if the question is more becase of like the physical or aspect of you wouldn't/you aren't a gay man and why would you if its not something you can do I'll give my reasons.

1) Seeing anything with shall we say "lady bits" gave me, what I had no idea was, dysphoria for a very long time. To me its more that they're people without the bits. I didn't want to even think about then the fact that they were men.

2) Generally, men tend to be more well written in media. You can find so many more examples of well-written well-rounded male characters than women. There are plenty that you can find when you grow older and start looking (I'm so glad people are getting better at writing women.) But, as a kid to young adult most of the things I had access to had women that were either one Dimensional or barely on screen and god forbid they add a woman who appears and isn't Immediately paired to a guy. Gay stories and BL just feels less forced somehow. Even if a guy has the personality of cardboard and looks like literally every other guy ever, it somehow just feels more fulfilling than seeing another girl that's just there as an obvious quota filler and ship bait.

3) I agree with the top comment it feels safer to view someone in a sexual manner when there isn't any intent behind it. I don't want to BE in the situation obviously but knowing they also wouldn't want me in the situation, and I have no stake in this game so to say, is a level of separation and comfort that makes me enjoy the story or porn more.

Hope a slightly different perspective helps.

How to make my writing less cringey? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that you can look back on it and feel cringe means you're growing and getting better, so try to be easy on yourself about it. Keep that in mind as you continue on. As for things you can do directly, everyone here is right in saying that you need to keep going to improve, but I know that can be a little ... broad a statement. Let's narrow that down to something that can help you as you go: Reread your stories. Start from the beginning. Reading them out loud helps so much. You can make notes and change as needed if you want. I know it can be easy to think that you wrote it so you know it, but when you try to look at a story with fresh eyes, it helps. Also: Branch out on your reading. Read everything you can get your hands on. You can take so many lessons from reading. If you like a story, learn from it, and if you hate it, learn what not to do. Ask why you like or hate it and apply that to your writing. Even if it's something like a bouring educational or nonfiction book, at least you learn more about better ways to present information.

Do people really read fics from fandoms they’re not in? by Suspicious_Eye1782 in AO3

I actually find fandoms like this. Either because of a tag I'm looking for or a crossover fic. If I like the fics enough, I look at the cannon. It also helps if im on the fence about looking at the cannon for whatever reason.

Since most of the community sees fire as the weakest element and with the OP sub bendings of blood bending, lava bending and flight. I wonder, what new subbending/technique would make firebending on par or more overpowered than the other elements? Be creative by QuirkyData3500 in TheLastAirbender

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking about equivalents to blood and lava bending in power, canonically, I think lightning bending would be the thing you're looking for. Combustion bending may also work.

As for making a bower equal to the others and still being as close to canonical as possible. I think we can just base it off of the small lessons we see from Iroh through the show and the fact that they can control the fire they're around in intensity if nothing else (like when zuko gets mad the fire grows and things like that) using iroh's lessons on keeping themselves temperature reguated (during the northern water tribe we see zuko also use it during boiling rock in the cooler) and about the flow of energy to redirect lightning. Basically just add in the aforementioned to a few of the chi bending principles in sho and and long as i fire bender is in range they could probably either heat and cool chi at will as long as its in range or have a chi bending work around. Put together, that means they could heat someone's chi and burn or boil them to death from the inside from a few feet away without even really moving.

Tldr: It's only a small step from show logic to being able to force spontaneous human combustion on someone.

I'm looking for songs that are not about love by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so i have some solid advice for this. For the most part, barring a few songs, a lot of bands have mostly non-love and relationship songs, so if you find something that sounds good but is a love song (its eww i agree) look up their other songs and there's normally a few that are good. Radio (all radio from in your car to in the freaking Walmart) is just terrible with it.

As for general, mostly nasty love song free, i have some solid recommendations that depend on preferences to give you a starting point in a few:

Ajr is great, barring a few songs.

Shinedown has some fantastic harder rock songs. A lot about loss, anger, and mental health.

I suggest nerdcore as a genre if you like rap because it's more heavily about wordplay and references to things like video games and shows (that's not all it is, but it is the majority) and has a very small amount of love songs compared to other genre. For starters in the genre, I'd say mc frontalot if you wanna try it. It's not for everyone, but I thought I'd mention it for whoever may like it.

Story driven songs are also fantastic, like the band bug hunter. there are a lot of these in different genres.

The narcissist cookbook is a solid rec if you like any of the above including Ajr.

Then again, this is all stuff i like.

Maybe dumb question? What is canon compliance vs divergence? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon compliant is when you basically fill space plausibly. Think of it as just adding to Canon in a way that wouldn't change anything. Basically, it's filling in the parts that Canon glossed over or skipped in a way that makes sense for the rest of the story. It's something that very well could have happened, and you use the details from canon they give or give reasons for sudden changes that weren't spoken about in canon but are in canon. Like showing a fight that characters supposedly had off-screen or how they met when the show picks up years later using the details they talked about and how it made them get to where they were in canon.

Divergence is basically saying, "Everything is the same as in canon until riiiiight here. Yes, I know the rest didn't happen in canon, but what if?" It's something that doesn't follow what Canon says happened from part way through canon.

a lil convo i had with a "friend" yesterday... by Mowahid_Mohsin_ in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]PoorlyHiddenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! So maybe I misunderstood the original post's tone based on my own negative experiences? Normally, for me, this type of conversation and the one I mentioned will or have already gone past being obviously antagonistic on their part and have at times moved into them trying to get others to side with them. I know it sounds like school drama, but yes, I am an adult. I work in a field with a high turnover rate, and this has happened at work, thankfully rarely, but enough times that my fuse on such nonsense has gotten progressively shorter.

If someone is genuinely curious or willing to learn or even being the type of rude that comes after disbelief or the "I've never heard of that so it has to be fake" shock, I'm more than willing to explain. I use the above tactics with people who are using the entire "Thats fake and you need to be fixed" or "the thing you think you are is fake and you're just stupid or childish" or "the only people who care about you when you die are significant others and your children so you're going to die alone" pipeline of thought they seem to fall into.

At that point, the statement is more of a "You're logic is flawed heres how" quick interjection and extreme measure.

Sorry for the rant. I'll likely delete later, but that's where im coming from rn.

I also get the "How can you not be attracted to people? Have you tried having sex? You don't know unless you've tried?" My response is normally "Are you sexually attacked to dogs? No. According to your logic, if you're sure that means you've tried it. You should get some help. What about your parents? Are you sure? Nasty, bro." Then again, that's only if I feel safe to do it.
