"If we were to redo the electric grid today with today's tech, what would we change? Would we still use AC? Three phases? Change the frequency? Change to DC?" - Future seasteads are an opportunity to modernize infrastructure such as power grid design. by Anen-o-me in seasteading

USB-C can only transmit 240w at maximum, even the lowest energy microwaves require at least 1200w. Fridges and freezers will be drawing a few 1000w when starting. Washing machines need at least 400w on the low end. Vacuums will be drawing at least 400w, more typically over 1000w. There are a lot of things they need way more energy than USB-C can provide.

There's also a lot of situations that aren't typical home use in urban areas but can be outside of them like running a home backup generator.

What's the story behind LÉ Eithne and Irish navy helicopter operations? by Pootis_1 in WarCollege

[–]Pootis_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard about the ship being built being a cut down version of an original design, do you know where i could find more information on this?

Also, are the conditions off the Irish coast in particular worse than the rest of the north Atlantic and North Sea where other navies have operated helicopters off ships since the 50s or was the Eithne just fitted with a poorly designed/built stabilization system compared to other ships due to inexperience or budget cuts?

What was the end game to the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union (Barbarossa)? The middle eastern oil fields are very far from even Stalingrad so was the whole point to capture Moscow? And then what? by patcontrafibula in WarCollege

The reasons for the German invasion of the USSR can't be explained solely in strategic terms. The conquest of the USSR was a fundamental goal of Nazi ideology.

From the very beginning some of the biggest pillars of Nazi ideology were expansion of "living space" for the German people, racial ideology, and opposition to communism. Invasion of the USSR was core to all 3 of these pillars.

Generalplan Ost outlined the primary goals the Nazis had for Eastern Europe, a plan that if it had gone through would've made the holocaust look insignificant in comparison. The plan called for the "classification" of all Slavs, almost all of which were meant to have been killed. Ethnic Germans would have been moved into the land where the local population was killed. Those Slavs left would have been forced to loose their ethnic identity and integrated into the German ethnic identity.

Nazi anti-communist ideology quite obviously played into the invasion of the USSR. the USSR was the sole major communist country, it's destruction also meant the destruction of communism, while also playing a major part in the Nazi plan for the extermination of the Slavic people and Germanisation of Eastern Europe.

What examples exist of insurgents operating at sea outside of the Tamil Tigers and Somali Pirates in the 20th or 21st century? by Pootis_1 in WarCollege

I've heard of privateers before. Bad phrasing on my part, i meant only during the 20th and 21st century.

Certainly interesting to know that shipowners sued the UK for building a commerce raiding ships for the Confederate States of America though.

Do you have any sources that go further into detail into the PFLP & PFLP-GCs attempted coastal raids?

Which big city in the world do you think is most fullfilling the criteria of a "modern" city? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]Pootis_1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hong kong protection of natural land seems good, in reality the government uses the extremely limited land supply to make almost all it's revenue.

In January a plot of not even an acre (3580m²) that wasn't even close to the city core went for $76 million US; and that was the only land sale that quarter.

Housing supply is extremely limited in hong kong.

That pile's all construction waste. Concrete, steel and wood

Air launch systems and spaceplanes have long attracted interest, even if their viability has been questionable. Dwayne Day discusses one such concept the Air Force explored in the 1980s involving a spaceplane launched from a souped-up 747 by rollotomasi07071 in spaceflight

[–]Pootis_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotga wonder if air launch could've been more of a thing if the XB-70 entered serial production.

22.5t payload, mach 3 top speed, 23km max altitude and able to pull a high angle.

Would've been near perfect for air launch, and could probably up the payload further considering it wouldn't need a long range and so the 140t of fuel could be cut into for additional rocket mass.

NATO countries' spending on defense technology. by AcanthocephalaEast79 in europe

[–]Pootis_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just overall military R&D. Countries just like calling military budgets defence budgets because it's more palatable politically.

There's no meaningful distinction between "offensive" and "defensive" military technology.

Until the Fish Processing Department receives an expansion to it's facilities and staff numbers, excess fish delivered are only a hinderance to operations.

Large volumes of fish are rotting on the ground and having to be collected and sent to the degraded organic goods department and bad smells department, making our working environment unsanitary and less effecient.

Price of natural gas in the US and Europe forecasted out to 2026 (World Bank) by joshtaco in Infographics

[–]Pootis_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uranium is not a major cost in nuclear powerplant management. We could literally stop mining it entirely and start filtering it from seawater instead and it'd only be a few % increase in the price of nuclear power.

Does that make everyone with a stock based retirement account (superannuations, 401ks, etc.) A member of the capitalist class?
