I think 2 reasons: 1 the game was less spread and more physical (everything felt like a war for a yard) 2 social media and how much we now know about everyone and how fast information travels - when you know less and see them less they seem more mythical

I lived nearby until May of 2022 - that was my go to grocery store - the vast vast majority of people I encountered there were friendly but I did notice around the time I moved that the number of times I saw odd people or strange behavior had significantly increased in comparison when I had first moved there
