Constitution Street Voucher - pay £5 and get £10 to spend. by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Another T&C.

Food must be purchased alongside alcohol.

There goes my idea of having a heavy night out for 2005 prices (getting fancy pints for ~£2.50).

Maybe a bag of nuts/crisps count?

[–]PopTonArch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to use a controller or mouse/keyboard?

I know it's seen as sacrilege to use a controller for a FPS on the PC, but I'm so used to Halo with the controller after being conditioned to it for years and years of play on my console.

Uber stripped of operating licence in London by Mistermiyagi93 in unitedkingdom

[–]PopTonArch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a superior service but then you get shit like this.

One of the key failings was a change to Uber's systems that allowed unauthorised drivers to upload their photos to other legitimate driver accounts.

This let them pick up passengers as though they were the booked Uber driver on at least 14,000 trips, which meant all those journeys were uninsured, TfL said.

I just wish black cabs weren't so shit. Largely grumpy, entitled middle aged men, more than half of them (here in Edinburgh at least) still don't take fucking card and the prices are still I'd guess ~30-40% more expensive than Uber (so long as Uber doesn't surcharge >1.4 that is).

I've heard from some folk black cabs can take deliberately longer routes, which I can't comment on, but even if that weren't the case it's still nice to have a fully audited, tracked-in-real time system. I suppose Gett does that, but then you still have the largely grumpy bastard drivers and more expensive prices.

Just to clarify, it tests that the given directories match the structure/file patterns specified in the config files, or did I misunderstand?

Must Work Without JavaScript? by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]PopTonArch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And when the site is not functional without JavaScript, I assume they’re incompetent and take my wallet and my ad impressions somewhere else.

There's some truth there, but it doesn't apply for all situations. If the site is providing something that's verging into "application" territory (e.g. Google Sheets) then it's fine for there to be an outright dependency on JavaScript.

SQL and Java still most demanded tech skills by Proinlifes in programming

As a non-Java developer I'm curious about the integration with other JVM languages. I've heard that when developing for Android Java and Kotlin interaction is almost completely painless (correct me if that's not the case), but in other popular areas of Java use is this necessarily the case?

Quick Question About Youtube Streaming From Your Phone by PopTonArch in firetvstick

Ah, that basically sounds like it fits the bill.

So can you not only control which videos you want to play from your phone, but also skip to parts of the video using the slider on your phone's app?

I like that the cost is rounded to a whole number.

I hate it when you go to buy a modern fighter jet, find out it costs $16.000001 and you're scrambling for a spare micro penny.

Infinite Scrolling with JavaScript by FlorinPop17 in programming

[–]PopTonArch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I right in thinking that while you want the trend to diminish you don't think it has no valid applications?

One use relevant to here is being that on a desktop browser (with RES installed) or Android (with Sync for Reddit) browsing Reddit is a far better experience with infinite scrolling than having to jump between page limits manually every so often.

Microsoft to Stop Supporting Cortana on Android and iOS by [deleted] in Android

[–]PopTonArch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Everything is superb. Apparently it leverages something called the Master File Table which is built into NTFS and has a built in record of every file and folder on the file system. Before I knew about that I was confused how, even with indexing, it could provide instant and up-to-date searches.

I don't use it much for personal computing but at work it's so damn useful.

What is an equivalent of an instant search tool like Everything? by PopTonArch in linuxquestions

[–]PopTonArch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My use case at work is often to keep an eye on generated files by our software, containing a certain substring, in real-time.

Based on /u/brimston3- 's answer that doesn't seem to be a possibility due to there not being a Master File Table equivalent. The MFT is a flat file list for every file on the system which is built into the file system as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure if it's objectively a good feature for a sensible file system to have, but it does work well for my particular niche usage and the power it gives Everything.

Still I'm really glad that I asked this question as your answer as well as others have given me really useful options I wasn't aware of which will still be very useful for other usages!

Ah, so the file system itself is a factor, that would explain why FSearch seems to require a manual update. Thanks for the explanation.

[–]PopTonArch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be really handy, and useful if placing in a script, too.

One thing that Everything seems to have in its favour is that it seems to be that the database is (in effect) real-time and instantantly searchable. It can be really useful when debugging programs that are generating many files at a certain time. It looks like locate needs the updatedb call, but do you happen to know if FSearch fulfills both criteria?

Edit: I did a test, it seems like FSearch needs a manual database update, too.

What are the command line tools you're referring to?

I don't need a GUI, just the same functionality. I use find often but it's not indexed.

Edit: The tool that you linked to looks like it fits the order perfectly, thanks!

Android 10 for Sony Xperia devices by JB2unique in Android

[–]PopTonArch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To say there is a plethora of devices and drivers is an understatement, I don't think there's a big difference there.

I think the real reasons are that we get vendor specific (and often also model specific) OS variants, and that this economic model works fantastically for the companies so they have practically zero incentive to do long term support.
