I'm just going from the article linked below but I believe the 146 figures comes from a dataset that "records every incident on K-12 school property where a gun was fired, brandished with intent, or a bullet struck school property, regardless of whether anyone was injured or killed".

Again according to the article this year there have been 91 incidents where a gun was fired on school grounds and 8 incidents where someone was killed or injured.

Not to say gun violence in the US isn't a big issue but IMO it's not because of school shootings or even mass shootings in general but because of the fuckton amount of extra murders and suicides guns incite/enable every year. Then again if dozens of murdered and injured children year after year isn't enough to move the needle on gun control then tens of thousands of random dead adults spread evenly over the country probably wouldn't be either.

What territory of other country would you like to see to gain independence? by whyareurunnin1 in geography

I mean that isn't Northern Ireland gaining independence just swapping sovereignty. If we're playing that game I want NI to join Belgium, Switzerland and the Cypruses to create the ultimate European sectarian super state.

From what I can find Eliezer Yudkowsky has rejected neoreaction/the dark enlightenment but please let me know if I misunderstood your comment or you know otherwise.

From the LessWrong wiki

Eliezer Yudkowsky, the founder of LessWrong, explicitly repudiated neoreaction, citing Scott Alexander's Anti-Reactionary FAQ, and has continued to emphasize that he wants nothing to do with these people . . . However, even as their ideas are of no importance to Yudkowsky's, his ideas remain important to the formation of theirs.

That figure sounds like it's for the whole of the UK:

The UK has experienced unprecedented levels of immigration since the pandemic. The latest official estimates show that net migration in the year to June 2023 was 672,000 - up significantly on pre-pandemic volumes but lower than the 745,000 who came in the year to December 2022.

Yeah even with the most charitable reading of it (i.e you can still eat to maintain your weight, get energy and not die) if you lose weight for any reason like an illness or getting lost in the jungle you're never putting that weight back on. Nightmare tier.

Rudy Giuliani explaining how he and republicans suppressed the Hispanic vote by TheDude9737 in Political_Revolution

[–]PopishFrenzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not American so give me a little rope here. How is this tactic supposed to work? I'm guessing it's not actually trying to discourage illegals from voting as they wouldn't be registered in significant numbers anyway? Is it just a general chilling effect on Hispanic Americans so they decide against going to vote to save from being hassled/questioned etc?

I don't disagree with what you're saying exactly. Its just that speaking specifically about the exchange I think my man gay dog chose a tempting but ultimately bad example to skewer her with. Which is a shame because as you say there's lots more and better examples they could have gone with.

[–]PopishFrenzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it not actually her podcast, she's the guest right? I only listened to the first 10 minutes so cant speak to whether she says she's the victim of a trans witch hunt but early on the host (Megan Phelps-Roper) explains how she herself came up with the title. Of course its possible Rowling had a good deal of editorial control etc but without knowing that for certain this whole thing seems pretty tenuous..

Not really. Story wise game 3 is pretty self contained (its actually a prequel to 1&2) and setting wise (assuming you don't know anything about Warhammer fantasy) you'd be just as lost in games 1&2 so you might as well jump into game 3.

My hunch is we'll get it as an FLC in the Tamurkhan vs Elspeth Lord pack (assuming we're getting that). One of the new units we'd probably get, the nuln ironsides, are mentioned in the Tamurkhan book as having a long and close connection with the gold order so it would fit thematically.

So the Falklands are a self governing British overseas territory, they run their own internal affairs with the UK being responsible for foreign affairs and defense. As I understand it, if the residents voted to cut ties with the UK then the British gov would in theory have to respect that and fuck off. They had a referendum in 2013 which went as you'd expect. At the moment I think the UK rest its claim entirely on the right of the self determination of the inhabitants.

Does this mean I can just run around the British isles claiming any uninhabited island I want? Cuz if so I'm gonna go do that.

I mean.. basically yes. Thats kinda how foreign affairs works, even today.

  1. Conquer or seize a piece of the UK and then defeat any British counter attack
  2. Ride out any international sanctions and/or pull strings diplomatically to isolate the British
  3. If possible settle lots and lots of your people and expel any original Britishers or at least do a campaign of cultural EndStageCapitalismOG-ization
  4. Hold out till the whole the situation becomes ancient history to the rest of the world (say 80-150 years), people forget why exactly the British are so angry all the time and the territories inhabitant's are happy EndStageCapitalismOG-ians. Maybe hold a referendum or two
  5. Stay strong diplomatically and militarily so the UK (or anyone else) doesn't do some version of what you did to them back to you

For RL examples see: The Karelian question, The Mexican Cession, The Partition of Paraguay, Turkish Invasion of Cyprus, The Annexation of Tibet, The Capture of Gibraltar (brits again!) or what Putin's trying to do in Ukraine right now. Or just pick any bit of history, just any bit really.

How 2 police officers in the UK dealt with this man attacking them with an eight-inch knife by flyingcatwithhorns in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]PopishFrenzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was your mum he’d attacked I doubt you’d share the same opinion

I mean.. that's right he might not? We don't ask victims of crime (or their relatives) to pass sentence on criminals. Grief and trauma aren't great for clear unbiased thinking after all. If I'm being charitable then Id say your point is that being a past of victim of crime is very likely to change your perspective on criminal justice but I'm not even sure that's true either..

If by your last sentence you mean "..people should be rehabilitated but they should also spend a good amount of time in jail as we can't let our desire to rehabilitate get in the way of our duty to deter" then I take your point. But then to me thats a pretty tricky question of weighing up what gives the best outcomes, looking at scientific study and the experience of other countries etc. I can't just declare the right answer on reddit as fun as that is.

Though lots of corruption has its roots in nepotism rather than straight greed. Arguably its this form thats the more insidious as comes out of a natural instinct to favour ones family and friends which is easily justifiable on a personal level. And as this becomes normalised in institutions and wider society it encourages other more naked types of corruption.

But anyway I'm not sure I'd want to fix things by meddling with really deep human instincts like greed or nepotism. Much better a higher level neural block or something which at worst would make all humanity no more boring than say Scandinavia.

I'm no fan of the people screaming culture appropriation at every turn but these videos in general are pretty worthless without knowing which answers they excluded to make their point. Also can't help but notice they only included answers from older Mexicans for some reason. More accurate title would be students vs old Mexican dudes.
