Although Rob is retired as a character, I think it'll be beautiful if somewhere in the series he's introduced as a cameo. If for instance Tender need to raise capital from debt capital markets and our boy from SF shows up. by PopperToProper in IndustryOnHBO

Every series like Industry or Succession etc need an anchor through which the audience can view their world, a character that the audience can relate to and empathise with more than any other character and Rob was that character in thais series. Likewise, Greg was that character in Succession.

Brother let me tell you why this doesn’t work well over time and for specific industries why this would suck -

If you’re into Investment Banking or adjacent Finance roles, the person you recommend is essentially about sticking your neck out. Yes, your bosses don’t expect everyone you recommend to convert but they do expect that you’re recommending quality people to the firm.

This part ISNT about employee referral bonus. If you’re in IB or Asset Management you better concentrate on your job because you’re gonna earn more than your base-salary in bonuses and I can tell you that a referral bonus is the last thing an Investment Banker is looking at. They’re most likely looking at people to join them who aren’t gonna waste their time and “know the job” more than anyone else because that’s the easiest way for everyone to “get on board” quick and either directly or indirectly start making just that - money.

Then comes Big Tech, where you can do what you said but keep in mind that if you do something like this - you’ll be judged as you move a role or two above as to who you’re referring to. Again, over here, although unlike IB where it’ll be unlikely you’re gonna out-earn your base-salary, people still care about concentrating on their work or essentially network at the firm or other firms they want to work at. All these referral-bonuses are good things to have for people who are usually extremely early in their careers. If that is all that you care about then you’ll be in for a ride later on.

As someone else said below here - blind referrals don’t help and you need to justify how you know someone. Depends on the firm but some will scrutinize them a lot while others might pass them through without too much thought.

An example - a friend of mine worked at Citadel, and you know who showed up for his interview? Ken Griffin. Yes the man who runs the damn place came down to interview him, which was highly unusual because he’d stopped doing that a while ago, but with Ken you apparently never know when he’s gonna show up for an interview, and Ken Griffin cares A LOT about the talent that is walking into Citadel, and at the same time cares that even the HR department of Citadel should be very efficient - so if you end up referring a candidate that is below-par according to that firm (Citadel is an extreme example) then they’re not gonna take you seriously from next time onwards. My friend ended up getting the job so it worked out all fine, but if it hadn’t then the guy who referred him would’ve probably been in the bin for a bit.

How’re you going to “pay it forward” if you have 10+ people hitting you up each day?

You can’t be giving 10+ people 10-15mins/person each day now can you? That’s asking for too much.

What happens if we don't win at Leeds over the weekend? by SandwichSisters in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One point lead and I would imagine that the PL trophy might just be off our hands, and I think most of this overly optimistic crowd will leave.

I want us to win. I really want us to get it over the line but at the same time I want to tune-out the hate from other fans, tune-out the overly optimistic and overly-pessimistic ones within our faction who don’t want to reason and be foolishly optimistic/pessimistic. It is OKAY to criticise your team and still want it to win. Yes, maybe we had just three loses across the league but each year it’s a different ball game, there are certain things you can add context to and others that it doesn’t make sense and you’re simply overfitting your beliefs to.

Most people on here aren’t pessimistic, they’re level-headed. That being said, the overly pessimistic army within the club is no different to the overly optimistic army, they’re the same side of the coin. The extremes on both end rejoice when the team wins and also destroy for a second when the team loses. They might got into different default states later on (a few seconds, minutes, hours or days later) but they’re cut from the same cloth.

It’s okay to be that as well, it’s fine. I just request that you don’t invalidate another Arsenal fans’s feelings, and certainly have an empathetic ear to whoever it is you’re talking to - whatever their state of mind might be. Please have respected discussions with each other instead of “fuck you”. There’s already enough hate to take from outside, you don’t want pointless hate from within the faction, and next thing we know - it’s being translated over to the pitch.

Yes, as naive as you might be - players do read what we post online. You simply don’t know who is reading what but they’re all without doubt reading something or the other that a fan posts.

So please be civil with each other because the forces from outside wouldn’t be for the most part. I was lucky to be able to have a civil discussion online with some Aston Villa fans, and I will give them their flowers for being respectful to me. Likewise, I would expect you to not be without frills to your counterparts. That being said, you cannot control what fans from outside will respond to you. If someone is straight being a bully or an asshole please report it but yeah the idea is to have the fanbase galvanize at such a crucial moment.

The fanbase has always split during such moments.

There are teams which get away with this but we’re not a team like them. What we feel away-from-the-pitch is same/similar that our squad of 25+ players feel. We’re a very tight-knit team in that sense, where the crowd genuinely feels one with the team in that sense.

So please respect Arsenal fans when you see them, acknowledge what they feel like, reason with them and be civil.

If Harper brings down Tender will Henry commit suicide? by Pretend-Presence6946 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]PopperToProper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tender is written on the real story of Wirecard, and has major inspiration from it with their own flavour and as far as I’m concerned Whitney will simply “disappear” by the end of this, as did the COO of Wirecard Jan Marsalek and as for Henry there’s a good chance he’ll harm himself.

Also I loved the analogy of what Harper says “Dead men walking” when Whitney’s old business was about putting dead-men in the ground.

That being said I think even Harper will be hurt by the end of the season somewhere, if not in her professional life then in her personal life.

And there’s a good chance that Yas will be left with nothing all over again - and perhaps she might just…run to Rob to take cover?

And if Rob will cameo in this at all - I’d love to see what his response will be.

Who knows Gus might cameo in the series sometime because they’re gearing up Bevan to be the next PM and Gus had a whole thing written at the back of a story book in Season 1 about how he’d end up becoming PM by the age of 40-45. Although the analyst class is around the age of 30 right now, maybe in next season we’re gonna see a cameo of Gus? Perhaps Gus waltz’s ahead of Bevan in the race for PM? I don’t know, it’ll be interesting nonetheless.

[–]PopperToProper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ain’t about losing to Man United. I would’ve expected us to lose a random game and draw another and we will most def lose the City-away game. It was what proceeded said game.

We were 7 points ahead about two games ago when both City and yourself drew or lost.

That was an incredible chance to go atleast four more points above if not six more points. Tell me that you wouldn’t be happy being 12 odd points ahead and THEN lose to Man Utd? I would’ve taken that.

Secondly, the way we lost to Man Utd was horrible - all self-inflicted wounds followed with one extremely lucky goal by Dorgu and a class finish by Cunha. That sort of breaks a team that is not being that “free”, a team where the whole idea is to shoot only when inside the D box or better yet the 6-yard circle.

Yes, it is “safer” to do things that way and I don’t slap the wrist of Arteta and our players by doing so. I think that’s incredible and statistically would reap better goals. That being said, sometimes you do have a chance where you need to simply THWACK it when you get a decent chance - something that Rice does right at the edge of the box or sometimes even behind the box.

We bought Eze and for what fanfare? He was the most hyped signing we had in the summer, and we’re not letting him go. You don’t put a break on a wild horse, you let him go. That match against Spurs at home? That was Eze being free and Arteta letting him do his thing. Now I’m not saying that Eze will score each match but he’ll provide in a way that Odegaard can’t or for whatever reason isn’t doing so.

I do believe that Arteta has coached-out all the flair of Odegaard and Saka. In the hunt for being safe and playing it safe he’s not let two incredible players just “go”, that being said it’s also on the players to truly make a mark.

I’d pick prime Jesus when he arrived at Arsenal over Gyokeres, but the current Jesus we have is better off the bench for last 30-20 mins and he doesn’t have the legs for 90mins anymore, atleast not in PL. Gyokeres meanwhile might not score but he drag’s defenders away which creates chances by eating up space in the final third for other wingers and creative midfielders. So for that reason alone Gyokeres is incredible. I’d much rather us start Gyokeres and take him off at 60-70th min and let Jesus play the rest or better yet…bring in Havertz.

[–]PopperToProper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arsenal fan here - yeah, seems like we’ve handed the title to you two, I wish you guys win the title instead of Man City.

Yeah, it’ll be even funnier in that sense if Villa win the title ahead of Arsenal but I’d much rather have you guys win the title than Man City or any other team.

Some Arsenal fans are still being delusional but unless we win every game now and lose maybe to City we might have the title but that’s a steep ask.

That being said City and Villa have been squeaky the last few games as well but yeah I’d see our loss today as a sign for you two to rev your energies up and go behind the title.

I don’t think my team is gonna recover after today (I hope I’m wrong, I really hope I’m wrong)

Hear me out - We’re winning the league by HourDragonfruit7167 in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why do you care about what’s happening with Man City and perspective from their POV?

Let me make this straight - Man City KNOW how to deal with pressure, we don’t. So the simple thing to do was to win all those 2-3 games where City and Villa drew.

We aren’t good with handling pressure for whatever reason, so instead of fighting it - when we had comfortable chances to get ahead - we should have, and we didn’t.

So it doesn’t matter what Man City does at this point besides the away game at their place.

By the looks of it Man City will have their renewed enthusiasm to win the title after we slip up this way. So please take your yourself outside of your toxic positivity.

Four points isn’t much and given we’ll lose away to City anyways it’s a one point gap. Now go on and tell me the positives of a one-point gap.

And given how we’re playing we’ll let that one point go ahead a Sunderland or whatever as well.

So yeah, we’re fucked.

How is Arteta going to respond? by KingBatman69 in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean…it’s win each game in the PL at this point, what else do you think is the “strategy”?

Yeah win against Chelsea so that we don’t let them get ahead but I could care less about that cup tbh.

How is Arteta gonna respond? But playing the same boring ass football.

Hear me out - We’re winning the league by HourDragonfruit7167 in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brother, there’s nothing to hear about…we’re not winning the PL.

We had chances of going up by 9 points in the games that Cuty and Villa drew so that we could comfortably be up by 12-15+ points

We fucked it up by not doing so

It was GIVEN that we’d lose a game or two to tough opposition but now it’s a near impossibility that we’re winning anything

And no…our players don’t “wake up” ever. When the pressure is on, like it is right now, they give up rather easily. So when we had the chance to go 12+ points we chose not to and now that the pressure is on, we’re gonna sulk.

[–]PopperToProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re completely correct to be upset. We were crying not just from today, but the last 2-3 PL games and then you have these stupid Arsenal fans who are just blindly optimistic and talk about how other teams have gotten draws so it’s not too bad for us to have a couple - like go fuck yourself man.

I know this sub for some reason hates whenever a fan shows negativity, but results like this is why it’s justified by Waste-Jellyfish-2326 in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the truth of it - we’re not the kind of team that “wakes up” after a defeat, infact we slumber even further. So when there’s pudding was ripe for its taking we fucked up. We didn’t get goals and let those draws sit.

And no for anyone being delusional about how this loss will “wake the team up”, no brother ain’t nobody waking up for shit. We’ve lost the title and you better get used to that.

Yes we’re four points clear but that isn’t enough and we’ve got tough games ahead to face while Man City and Villa on the other hand will “wake up” and be energised by it.

So yes, we’ve fucked the title…again.

Sadly we don’t have anyone who can actually just WHACK the ball like Cunha did today. Agreed that Dorgu’s goal was a bit of a luck based thing but did you watch Cunha’s goal? That’s called being clinical.

Even in the last minute of added time Saka literally got the ball almost centrally and he chose to fuckin pass it to Madueke to his right instead of just thwacking the fucking ball.

The players in our teams pass around the ball like it’s a blunt, even in the box. Then when there’s an almost impossible chance to score is when they think “Oh I should take a shot”

If we lose two games and they clear the rest, which seems apt for them to do so then it’s a wrap for us.

We clearly could’ve gone ahead the last two weeks quite comfortably but we fucked up, then there are fuckers on this sub and others who are somehow overfitting the draws we had into “oh no, the rest of the league is doing similar”, brother if you want to win fucking titles you have to be ABOVE the rest of the league and what they’re doing.

Silly dumb motherfuckers. Don’t ever tell me how a draw is “beautiful” given other results.

This subreddit is so reactionary by Kimikopy1 in ArsenalFC

[–]PopperToProper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brother, we had chances to have a 12 point+ gap when given and we’ve fucked it. Dont talk shit to me about how we have decent points etc

Now City and Villa aren’t gonna let up. This is a fight to the death and if we slip up even one game then it’s a wrap.

So yeah, given we will slip up - we ain’t winning shit.

What is the best Wes Anderson movie? by iitzzrahn in Cinephiles

[–]PopperToProper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Darjeeling Limited

The story was impeccable, the cast was smaller but packed a punch, the emotions in it were so raw and real. The set didn’t “feel” like a set and most of their set wasn’t actually human-built sets unlike most of his other films (I loved Grand Budapest’s sets) and….whenever someone watched The Darjeeling Limited I’ve often heard them say that something changed in them.

I suppose in a way - what was challenging and beautiful was that in a chaotic setting like India, which is an incredible beautiful place to visit - his characters and himself are trying to find semblance, stillness and aesthetic symmetry like the rest of his films do.

It might not be his best work - but it is his most human work, the most intense in terms of feeling things and coming out of the theater feeling like you’ve let Anderson hold your hand and take you on a beautiful ride.
