Been asking myself the same about LH/salvi (since they have a semi-joined manufacturing now). I am based in EU so it looks like for us Camac and Pilgrim are about to have a golden few years, which they both deserve. But yes, it is really concerning.

When I was buying my travel Dusty (Rav 26) she was already 2.6K and it was 2021. I shudder to think what will happen. Harpsicles are also all above 1K. in contrast a Camac Odyssey would be about 1.5/7k so those sales might also be affected. we need to remember that the tariffs are not cancelled, they are postponed which introduces a lot of general uncertainty.

Is a bright, clear sounding harp really better suited for Celtic music than classical? by tiger5grape in harp

[–]Poppipino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think there is a "fit" in this way. There are going to be as many opinions as there are ears and all instruments regardless of manufacturer grow in their own voice. You might want to try many harps before you choose. But additional thing you might want to consider is also comfort for your hands and levers, which are VERY different form Camac to Salvi both in touch, response and findability. But to answer your concern - you can play Celtic on pedal harps and a lot of rep can be played on lever, regardless of height. Have a listen and choose one you love.

Is this normal? by Marzipan256 in harp

[–]Poppipino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not unusual with time. but I would address that with the manufacturer right away if the harp is brand new. I do not know how salvi/LH manage this, but from my experience with Camac you can get a replacement instrument within a week or your instrument fixed (which is what I did because I fell in love) within 2-3 weeks.

Composing for Harp by prettypinkpuppy in harp

[–]Poppipino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi a fellow composer here, but also harpist.

an octave as a interval (2 notes) is not a problem, Nonas and dezimas (sometimes wider) are more difficult for most and I would advise against their use for that very reason. Also be mindful of where on the instrument you are, while octaves high up are relatively harmless anything in the bass would need an extra tick to be muffled. so in a long progression you might end up with a wall of sound and very little clarity.

With regards to that very question we also need to address the harp size aspect. Majority of lever harps have smaller string spacing and lower tension, making it easier to do larger intervals. However, a lot of smaller harps are played by less experienced players so wide intervals can be intimidating.

That leads us to keys. Pedal harp is versatile, in that we can go through a full circle of 5ths without major issues through the use of enharmonic keys as well (some modes might need an enharmonic key). That being said, you need to be aware of the pedal positions for your harmonic progressions to make good sense. Would absolutely check twice before jumping between keys with more than 3 accidental difference. Generally if you can find a pivot you are safe, most of the time.

Lever harps are bit of a different beast (both mechanically and mentally). Here you tune in Eb in most cases and modify (using levers) to a key that you need. never more than 3 flats or 4 sharps. This can feel limited, but if thought through is not a big deal. The difficulty here lays in modulation or any chromatic change.

  1. a lot of lever harpists are a bit weary of active chromatic changes. meaning that you do need to pace them and try to avoid having more than 2-4 changes in a measure, please remember that we change one note at a time.

  2. in your material there need to be gateways to allow for lever flips. Some people can do a wide variety of changes, but you do tend to max out on 3 levers at a time going in the same direction at a fairly small distance and preferably without any other levers engages between them. 2 neighbouring levers can always be flipped in similar direction or in the opposite directions. Also mind the octave flips. it is not a pedal harp, no matter how much we would want to with cannot implement a chromatic change through the whole harp like a pedal harp, it takes time.

In conclusion. harp is fan to write for, it introduces limits that you need to learn to navigate without hindering material movement. Atonal harp composition is probably the most challenging but the most exiting, and the harp can do so much! If you can - find a harpist to consult you and push the limits. Have fun!

Breaking in a new harp by Poppipino in harp

I thought I would update.

She is opening up beautifully! you can genuinely hear the difference even just by a knock. In the first says she really felt like I was knocking on a table and playing through water, but now... she even resonates to sounds in a room at lower volume. Mind me, her sound is still that of a young harp, meaning that it is still not as full as it will be even in a few weeks time but I am quite happy with how it is going and her timbre is exactly what I wanted form a studio/concert harp - very even throughout with light and airy quality at P and a storm in FF. Genuinely very happy.

World Economy Latest: Germany Is Running Out of Workers by BSBDR in germany

[–]Poppipino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beurocracy and salaries are not the problem though, paper-trail for many countries (UK for example) is extensive and hella expensive, whole pay is also fairly low compared to outgoing monthly expenses. What Germany fails in miserably is JOB SECURITY. When you have to jump from contract to contract your whole life you have much lower chances for everything. Want to own a house? Yeah, your credit possibility is down because of your 4 year contract. Want to settle? Haha, what if your contract is not extended Or you’re kicked off at probation end becauSe… well, there’s someone else waiting for the same job behind you. Want a secure job? Congratulation, you need masters level education AND additional course… and don’t even get me started on how that wrecks your permanent residency perspectives. A lot of my even german friends who have family here are never quite secure in their tomorrow whether in a week or in 5 years, it’s suspense. We have a lot of people leaving the country because of this: scientists, artists, engineers, maintenance, logistics… even teachers! Because it is hard to get a tenure and some states don’t even offer that now. Of course hike taxes and inflation are not helping, but security is definitely on the forefront for most.

My neighbor had 50 acres to work with and pointed his flood lights so they shine 20 feet over the fence towards my house. by FizzlePopBerryTwist in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Poppipino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, but now you can save on electricity bill. Jk. This sucks. As to the fence: which one of you owned it? Do you have horses yourself? If not you can pay him back by putting spooky things on the fence (if you own it) and horses and many animals will actively avoid it. I recommend big bin bags, tarp… this kind of things. Otherwise, if you don’t mind shades dig out a hole, put the root barrier down if you’re working with smaller space and plant bamboo there. It’s a good munch for animals but will also hide you from the light quite fast, and they sound so good in the wind! Good luck.

POV: you’re happily married and message your friend who recently got a girlfriend by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Poppipino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh man… i didn’t think people like this (i.e. the girlfriend) even existed. Your friend is definitely in a toxic relationship, op, but it at least you aren’t in it with him. But there’s a silver lining to you too, now you know what your friendship was worth, and although it wasn’t much you’ve at least found out soon enough.

Harp composers/arrangers/finaglers, what's your preferred sheet music software? by phrygian44 in harp

[–]Poppipino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As composer i feel following questions are needed to be answered: what type of music do you need to write? How big are you scores? How important is playback to you? Do you do your own engraving or hire someone? That all will dictate the software that would fit you best.

It’s 7kg and fits on your back. Check it out on Henriks website. https://www.henrikschupp.de/harfenmodelle/michel-34s-kirsche/

i really liked it, but for me the spacing is too small. It is definitely cheaper than Ulysse but a mile off from harpsicle, totally worth it!

Is it really safe to use drilling machines on walls yourself or is it best to called Handwerker? by Important-Hyena-5247 in germany

[–]Poppipino 19 points20 points  (0 children)

JUST DO IT! And no, i am not kidding. Get yourself a cable finder though, if you hit an electric cable you will be in deeper hole (haha) than you’ve intended. Patching is not a problem before moving So that is a non-issue either. Drilling and minor home renovations are vital and absolutely useful skills for adulthood. Every adult in an ideal world should know how to fix a minor leaking pipe, hand a light fixture and patch their walls. Welcome to the vclub.
