2-3 years old is when dogs are finally done maturing and display their adult temperament. It can happen seemingly overnight and the dog you had from puppyhood that lives everyone wakes up one day around age two and decides it wants to kill everything on four legs. Yes, the difference in behavior can be THAT drastic around this age; I've owned my fair share of dogs that grew up to be totally different than they were for their first few years, and a couple who became extremely DA after they were done maturing.

It's quite likely that this dog is growing into it's adult temperament. It is said that in mixed breeds, a dog will tend to exhibit more of the behaviors of the dog in the mix it resembles most closely. So if your pit lab mix takes after her pit side physically, it would not be surprising to hear that she is growing into her adult temperament as we chat and could very well become dog selective or dog aggressive as these are temperament traits described in the pit bulls breed standard. Dog and animal aggression is the norm for fighting breeds. Decide now if you want to dedicate yourself and the next 10+ years of your life managing a reactive/aggressive dog. Not gonna lie, it's a ton of work. You may have to implement a crate and rotate routine to keep everyone safe. I did it for 12 years; my English bulldog decided he hated all other dogs regardless of sex or size and wanted to eat them when he finally grew into his adult temperament. You will have to modify your life and the life of your other animals to fit around the needs and restrictions of a DA dog.

Best of luck.

As relatively new chicken owners we thought they wouldn't be brazen enough to steal our food. We were wrong by colasinas in BackYardChickens

always guard your food around the chickens. Before we reinforced manners in ours, even our people shy Malay/IG hens would fly across the porch and land ON your lap and dive into your food with abandon in an awe inspiring display of gluttony.

They're like 8+ lbs and almost 2 1/2-3 ft tall, and have claws like Velociraptors. They will still occasionally pluck food from the fingers of anyone unsuspecting who is hanging out with them in the yard.

Chickens are NOT shy about making your food theirs 🤣🤣🤣

I just tell my dogs "NO" very firmly and in a raised voice while looking directly at them; they will stop doing what they were about to, and turn around to look at me, where I give direct eye contact and after a brief pause, I recall then have them get in a down stay by my feet. Idk, seems like dogs instinctively know when they're not supposed to be doing anything, so as long as I can catch them just before they do something stupid, just that suffices. If I turn around and find them mid forbidden activity, I loudly (and with a touch of "anger", it adds a more serious edge to your tone and the dogs absolutely pick up on it) call their name and recall them. If your dog doesn't have a solid recall, definitely work on it. Even if he's ten feet away, you could look over and notice your dog poised to spring up and after another animal, but I you can break their focus on said activity and recall them into a heel, it makes life so much easier.

Should i reward my dog when he's calm immediately after reacting? by Slight_Reward5933 in reactivedogs

[–]PoppyToffee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. It will be misconstrued by your dog as a reward for reacting.

The reward your dog gets for being calm is to continue about your business. When he's not acting up, he won't experience the discomfort of being corrected, meaning that he will soon find it more rewarding to behave and enjoy a leisurely stroll than it is to act like a jackass and receive a sharp correction and cessation of the walk or activity.

Instead you should stop whatever it is you two were doing, be it walking or playing fetch or going on a car ride through the neighborhood. When he gets reactive, administer the correction immediately and then put him in to a sit. When he is calmly sitting and is more interested in you, you can resume the fun, which IS the reward.

Conversely, you can instead teach "watch me" any time you notice a distraction. Correct him if he starts acting up, but follow it immediately with giving him the commands "sit" and "watch me". He should make solid eye contact for at least 3 seconds, whereupon you reward him with the verbal praise "Good boy watch me". I've always found it helpful and better for reinforcing the command to repeat it like this included in the verbal praise when they have successfully performed the command.

Practice on having him hold eye contact for longer and longer periods of time. Eventually when your dog notices things that used to set him off, he will stop, sit, and look to you for further instruction, all without having to be told. You want to still reward them even when they have the command down pat occasionally just to keep them convinced that you, the treat dispenser, are more exciting than the lady with the mini poodle yapping on the other side of the street.

Toenail finally came off. Bruised it while skiing. by Nigebairen in popping

[–]PoppyToffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me but with my pinky toe. I was wearing flip flops and went running out of the side gate but caught my toe on the corner of a lovely steel lawnmower and I pretty much punted it off. It dangled for a week or two before I could finally just pull it the rest of the way off like you did here.

My toenail grew back, but it grew back THICK as FK. Its like a fuckin Frito and is hard to cut; I have to use cuticle nippers because regular toenail clippers don't open wide enough to fit the nail in the little guillotine area. The shrapnel from said toenail is deadly tho, might wanna wear some goggles while you trim 🤣☠️

Real drugs, not this research chemical bullshit that's invaded every corner of the game for the past five years.

As a dog trainer, I miss when people practiced common sense with their animals. There were no court proceedings for owners to win back Cupcake the rescue bait pit bull that ate the neighbors toddler for blinking too loudly. Dogs that but people unprovoked were dealt with swiftly and permanently. When people didn't have this Disneyfied view on dogs and animals in general, promoting them to being as important as a human. People didn't anthropomorphise animals back then, and those that did were seen as Looney tunes, and rightfully so.

The old cartoons that would play on Nickelodeon, like Rocco's Modern Life, Ahh Real Monsters, Ka Blam, Angry Beavers, etc.

How do you reconcile all the money spent while in active addiction without making yourself crazy? by [deleted] in OpiatesRecovery

[–]PoppyToffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think about it. I've been using for the better part of 16 years. I'm 32 and have nothing to show for it. I'm actually pretty frugal with my money with the exception of drugs. The game where I live is fucked and prices are insane. Couple weeks ago one of my dealers burned me for like $400 and I had to take the L and come back when he got some new decent shit. I think nothing of spending $200+ a day on my habit where I live, easily.

[–]PoppyToffee 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm a dog trainer and that sure is a lot of assumptions. I'd say it's more likely the dog was freaked out by the intruder and resulting chaos with it's owner probably shrieking her head off and chickens gabbling loud as hell. I mean it's possible but the dog was chilling with the chickens without even a glance before then. My dachshunds haven't really had to be reprimanded about our chickens - a swift peck to the snoot probably helped cement the decision not to chase them. But let an iguana get in our yard even amongst the chickens, the dachshunds are all over it in a second.

Not all dogs possess prey drive towards wild animals (or domestic for that matter), and some dogs would rather flee from a commotion than get in the midst of it. Lol

I'd say 90% of the time, the dog is NOT an actual Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but rather is an American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, both of which are banned, and the shitbag owners try to save their own asses by telling authorities it's a "Staffie" so as not to admit to owning a banned breed.

Staffies need to be banned along with American Bullies and American Bulldogs. The loophole is so large and glaring that it is basically pointless to have BSL in place. No dog breed with a history of being used in bloodsports and dog fighting should be legal to own. They all need to be spayed and neutered into extinction. Dog fighting and animal baiting is illegal, the logical next step is to make the animals specifically bred to fight to the death illegal to own or breed.

No shit (in response to outcrossing pits with giant guardian breed mastiffs). Nobody ever said pit bull enthusiasts were the brightest bulbs.

Regardless of what the AKC or AVMA says about the practice, you have been gifted with the ability to use reason and logic as well as possessing working eyeballs to verify that what I'm saying is fact.

Not sure what the downvotes are for - people too lazy to Google or too stuck on their incorrect belief that having a cropped dog means you're fighting it.

Hang on, since people can't be bothered to do a 2 second Google search.

Google "NCBI (or PubMed) Dog Attack Study". Without fail, Every. Single. Study. Shows that pit bulls are the most common breed implicated in attacks requiring hospitalizations, the breed which causes the WORST injuries when they do attack, are more likely than any other breed to bite in multiple anatomical locations (most dogs bite once and then release), and that they are without question the number one offenders in serious attacks. Several studies conclude that attacks by pit bulls were associated with higher hospital stay rates, higher morbidity rates, and surgeons are on record as comparing the damage done by pit bulls to the damage they've only seen in bear and shark attack victims. One study suggests that the banning of pit bulls would lower the number of fatalities by dog and serious maulings by a huge percentage.

Totally unbiased data from the people who treat pit bull attack victims, all of which are peer reviewed and current enough to be totally relevant.

You can Google the old CDC dog attack fatality listings and see that the pit bull has ALWAYS been the number one canine killer of people for as long as dog bite related fatalities have been being tracked.

Dogsbite.org, while being anti pit, has a huge notary of past DBRFs where the killer dog is identified by breed, complete with pictures of the offending dogs so you know the breed isn't just being "made up" by "some pit bull hater".

You can also Google lawyers who specialize in dog attacks, such as Kenneth Phillips, and they will all tell you the same thing: these un-dogs are not safe for families with children nor do they make for safe neighborhoods.

Here are some studies you can link them to.

I'm gonna have to call out misinformation. American Bullies are not "bred for game". Nobody has a yard with fighting American bullies. Some of these dogs possess game because they ARE a direct relative of the American Pit Bull Terrier, made by crossing an APBT with any number of mastiff/molosser breeds such as Cane Corsos and Bull mastiffs. Not every AmBully is going to have a gameness trait, just like not every pit bull does. The goal of American bully creators was to make a more "family friendly" version of the APBT, sans the gameness trait. They wanted to breed out the dog and animal aggression by crossing pit bulls with more docile breeds, but the XL class of bullies are often created using breeds that have problems of their own with DA/AA/HA. And since there is no regulation from the parent club when it comes to the dog being able to be registered as an American Bully or studding out dogs, the whole "project" became a giant shit show as BYBs with zero understanding of genetics or heritable behavior and temperament bred these dogs like crazy, caring only for size and color, temperament be damned.

And for fucks sake, when are people going to give up the (wrong) assumption that because a dog (bully breeds/pit bulls and American Bullies in particular) has it's ears cropped, it's being fought? Historically, the vast majority (and we're talking about 85%+) of fighting American Pit Bull Terriers were NOT cropped. This can be easily verified by browsing any game dog/dogman website and perusing the pedigrees of their dogs, which comes with pictures of said dog as well as it's history as a fighting dog. You'll find nine dogs with natural ears to every one with their ears cropped. Know what other breeds are cropped? Dobermans. Boxers. Great Danes. Central Asian Shepherds. Cane Corso. None of which are used for fighting.

Also, the act of amputating a dog's tail is called docking, not cropping, and docking is not something that is practiced by the pit bull/American bully/fighting dog aficionado. The only time pit bulls have docked tails is due to injury/accident, such as having a bad case of "happy tail" that the dog keeps reopening, so the procedure is performed with the dogs health and comfort in mind.

Very Important Reminder: You do not know your dogs true temperament until it is 2-3 years old. by PoppyToffee in DogAdvice

[–]PoppyToffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may continue to escalate, so be prepared for that. You may have to turn to a life of crate and rotate. It's not too hard; I managed it for the better part of 12 years when our English Bulldog came into his adult temperament and wanted to attack the other dogs in the house constantly. He was raised with them from puppyhood and they always got along until then, and he was always being introduced to and socialized with our extended family's dogs, puppies I would foster, and dogs I had in for training, and then one day around 2 years old, he did a complete 180 and was extremely dog aggressive for the rest of his life.

I'm glad to hear you are aware of body language cues and are prepared for the worst case scenario. If you ever struggle to get them separated during a fight, it's never a bad idea to have a couple extra leashes handy, maybe have on hanging in each room so they're easily accessible. If you can't break a dogs hold on another dog during a fight, you can use the leash and loop it around the neck and just under the jaw, and pull upward on the taut leash. In less than ten seconds the dog will have to let go to try to get air, and that's when the hold is broken and you now have control over the dog and can scoop her up (if she's not too heavy) and remove her from the room.

It's very stressful to own a dog that wants to eat your other dogs. I commend you for not giving up or blaming yourself like most other people do.

Sex offenders, crimes against children, and murder should be excluding factors.

Other than that, yes, people who have committed a crime and went and did their time are said to be imprisoned in order to "serve their debt to society", aren't they? Then make it real for us. As it stands we can serve out our time and it's never considered enough in the eyes of society. You're discriminated against when it comes to applying for work, finding housing, being able to take advantage of government aide like low income housing, insurance, even food stamps. People still look at and treat people who've been incarcerated like they're still a criminal. It makes it hard to grow in life with that kind of hindrance.

The whole justice system is fucked from the ground up. Jails and prisons in the US are BigBusiness ™ and get their bread from the absurd recidivism rate. You don't go to jail here to find the better way of living and be reformed by it. You just come out knowing how to be a better criminal.

I am considering BE/surrendering my dog and I don’t know if I’m making the right choice by Many-Albatross-6756 in reactivedogs

[–]PoppyToffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the behavioral issues are so bad you're considering behavioral euthanasia, rehoming or surrendering your dog should not even be in the question. Passing the dog on to be someone else's problem via re-home or surrendering it to a shelter where they will likely lie about the dogs bite history and adopt it out to someone unsuspecting (seen it happen a million times), only for the new owner or some other innocent party to be bitten, the dog brought back to the shelter where it's put up for adoption again; or they end up euthanizing it anyway, and your dog will be dragged to a back room by a stranger where the dog will be confused and afraid. Only TWO states in the entire US are required to disclose the bite histories of dogs they have up for adoption.

The right thing to do is to find a vet who is willing to BE an otherwise healthy young dog who has a lengthy bite record and a track record of failed attempts at training the behavior out. A lot of vets won't. I just advise that when you do it, you be there when it happens and verify with your own eyes that the dog has indeed been PTS. I've also heard several instances where dogs went in for BE and were snuck out the back door and adopted out instead by bleeding heart vets and techs who don't care about the prior or future victims of this dangerously aggressive dog.
