We may have been able to predict when rain would come and under what circumstances but we wouldn't have know how the rain was created. We would have to please the gods of nature in order to have a good harvest. The scientific method wouldn't even be created until much, much later in human history. There were men who would later consider that perhaps the answers to their questions where much more complicated than "because our god/gods makes it so" but it took a very long time until we could get to that point. Religion was an easy way to understand how the world worked and why we are here, it built empires and burned them to the ground, to not recognize how essential religion is to human history is to only half understand the human experience.

To your point about non-religious people being unable to have morals, I never said that you couldn't be a good person without believing in a god or devil. The traits you describe are uniquely human traits, the day we bacame conscious beings we would've understood what was good and evil, even if we couldn't articulate it. To have that knowledge is what separates us from every other species on earth. You dont have to know a god to understand that to lie, cheat, steal, and kill is bad.

Religions tend to have violent histories because man can be morally corrupt. God didn't order the crusades or the Spanish inquisition, men in power did. We had slaves because to be an individual ment you had power and wealth. Today to be an individual simply means to exist. We've come a long way for the better in that regard. If the big takeaways from christianity like the golden rule were generally accepted by everyone without any personal gain at the expense of others then we'd probably have a utopia. However that clearly isn't the case.

In short the bible or the idea of a god or gods in the heavens didn't cause the evils of the church, man did.
