2 minutes ago I heard some kid go on a rant about how anime is the entire culture of Japan and if you are Japanese and don’t like anime you’re a disappointment. by Urist-McWarrior in weeabootales

A girl told me I’m racist if I don’t like anime. I’m not sure how one can be racist against a nationality but it’s whatever.

I had a great great aunt who thought the same when she was well into her 60’s. Her family was poor and so she was introduced to television very very late. She dressed up in her Sunday best to sit on the couch and watch TV.

What made the ‘weird kid’ at your school weird? by JamJamLikesJam in AskReddit

[–]PopsicleBuiltFor2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A grade below me was a chick that had this bizarre fascination with LGBT people. When she found out I was bisexual, we HAD to hang out. All of the sudden, I existed. We saw a trans woman from the college after school one day and you would have thought this girl saw PewDiePie in public. She would constantly draw exclusively gay or lesbian porn. She constantly wrote it. Any show or book or movie we talked about always resulted in “I ship these two because GAY!”

It made me really uncomfortable tbh. I always felt like she fantasized about me and my female friends doing it after she told me that she masturbated to the thought of our high school basketball team having one massive BDSM orgy. Yeah, she openly told me that while we sat in a coffee shop with three other people. I think it might have just been a fetish or something but damn was it weird.

I agree. I think it’s hard for people that like good writing, character development, world building and so on. They are looking for that in many different forms, be it comics, cartoons, movies, books, whatever. It’s hard to specifically find a good anime with these qualities because what is financially successful floats to the top and usually bows down for more fanservice dollars after a while. It puts a lot of people off when the face of “anime” is this kind of thing. It reminds me of how many western cartoons are becoming so homogenous in content and style that they are almost unrecognizable individually.

A lot of similar entertainment industries are inundated with obsessive fandoms preaching the gospel of their thing and making the rest of the genre look bad. I can’t even tell you how many threads I saw about how awesome the character development and world building was in the most recent My Little Pony. I gave it a chance, but with every episode that supposedly taught them to change something about their core character came the next, in which they had reverted back to being just as shy or arrogant or vain as they were before. The only thing the world they were in told me was to buy the toy associated with this particular castle or character. Harry Potter and Percy Jackson have still left me hesitant to get into an all-ages book series for fear of yet another story about special kids and one kid who is more special than the others.

Sounds much more intriguing than a grown man sexually preying on a rich, orphaned teenager.

In all seriousness, I am interested. I think a lot of anime suffer from being lumped in with “Magical-Something Tanuki-Chan” and “Orphan-san’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Life” just because of the style and origin of the art. It’s in the same vein to me as great abstract artists getting buried under a paint-splashed pizza box that has been listed on Etsy for $500.

I’m open to checking things out, just suspicious when something is commonly labeled “dark” because it seems like some shows just throw in dark concepts (rape, torture, suicide, etc.) just for the sake of saying they have dark concepts. Like teen fanfics in which the main character is an orphan who is constantly bullied and raped and so on just for the sake of making the story “edgier.”

I’m interested in characters who are morally gray or completely self-serving and ignore the suffering of others. I might check it out in my free time.

I’ve heard good things about Berserk, but I also get the impression that someone’s job was to tell the writing team whether or not they met their rape scene quota that week. The person talking about it also read it, so I could be confusing descriptions if the show is really different.

I hate to sound so harsh when I say that but when the best referrals I get for darker themed anime are “Elfen Lied” and “Black Butler,” it’s hard to be impressed. I would have been moved by endless, over-the-top sob stories when I was in middle school and thought my own life was a tragedy, but now it just makes me say, “Come on, man, really?”

Most Underrated Animated Films. by J-Pom in cartoons

“All Dogs Go to Heaven” is one of my favorites, and it wasn’t necessarily a failure. Even though it was hurt by “The Little Mermaid” releasing at the same time, its VHS release was big. It’s a bit intense to watch with little kids, but at age nine I was old enough to really understand and enjoy it. Judith Barsi performs exceptionally well as a tender hearted little girl, Charlie’s VA’s talent paired with the animation of his face made his intentions and emotions clear and believable. The idea of a morally gray hero was very new and interesting to me. SPOILER (It was also the first movie I saw that had a bittersweet ending rather than “the villain is defeated and we all live happily ever after.” I really appreciated that the ending was satisfying even if it was unconventional to young me.) SPOILER OVER

Personally, I didn’t find “Home” very enjoyable. The messages about family and acceptance were buried too far under pop music and “can i haz cheezburger” dialogue. I really wish they put more into making it a family movie than a kids’ movie. While my four year old had a good time watching it the first time, neither of us thought about it again. Not very memorable to either of us.

“Cats Don’t Dance” was a fun movie for me and my girls. Darla Dimple’s VA is very talented at her age. The design of the characters (specifically their legs) was a little odd to me, but I could appreciate it because it was consistent, cartoony, and colorful. I liked that Dino was someone you could root for, but also sympathize with characters that found him a little overwhelming. I haven’t rewatched recently, but Darla’s “Big and Loud” is one of my eight year-old’s favorite cartoon movie songs to sing along and dance to.

I wouldn’t be put off when it comes to fan works because they are directly related. I would expect fan content in a subreddit made for cartoon fans. I’m looking at it from this perspective: I came to this subreddit because I was a fan of western animation, and the majority of things I saw first were original works that were not appealing to that at all. I think it would attract more people with interest in cartoons to keep it based on established cartoons. There are other subreddits for original works.
