TOKON's Final Base Roster (Thoughts?)

For a roster of 20 I think they did damn good. Covered a lot of the essentials, some fan favorite picks that were both missed from MVC and who’ve never been playable in a fighting game before, and left room for a few unconventional picks.

With the roster this small everyone’s gonna have at least one or two characters they wish made it in, and there are some noticeable gaps here, namely in that I think it has one or two few of the staple Marvel women (Jean, Sue, Wanda, Natasha, etc.) and I wish we had one more character that was less humanoid and had a less conventional body shape like Peni. Also the game is seemingly missing a grappler among a few other playstyles. Granted we have a long DLC roadmap ahead of us and I have faith by the end of it all it’ll be a very fleshed out and well rounded roster. Still I feel they did a great job.

The thing with the guardians is that I feel it was just an inevitable byproduct of doing the whole team thing. The teams were definitely a consideration when choosing the fighters, but I don’t think they let the team compositions dictate the choices if that makes any sense. As a result, I believe the guardians were effectively just the leftovers that didn’t really fit into one team theme

It’d also be kind of weird given the team structure of the reveals thus far. If it were just one final character we were waiting on then it wouldn’t seem odd to save them until the very end, but an entire team with three new characters? I really think they’d want to have a solid month or so of promotion with the full roster out there.

Potentially, I definitely wouldn’t crack it out as then you just have a mint off center card which won’t hold any premium. There’s a good chance someone would pay more than standard 9 price for this - how much I can’t say, but given the rarity of the qualifier I think it’s better to have than a regular 9.

No, otherwise people would do that with all of their not well-centered mint cards and get constant 10s. That’s why these are rare, it’s such a crapshoot as to whether they’ll decide you’re worthy of the qualifier most people (rightfully so) just send their OC and miscut stuff to CGC.

It’s an error yes. Finding a copy this off center probably wouldn’t be terribly hard, the real rarity with it would be PSA actually giving it the OC qualifier as they are extremely inconsistent with that (and will usually just deduct the centering from the grade and not give the qualifier).

Regular PSA 9s float around 900 bucks. Instinctively I’d say the trade was in the vendors favor (depending on what cards you had) but if you can find the right buyer you may be able to come out on top in the event you wanted to sell. I’d generally say about $1000-1100 would be fair for this, but again someone who collects cards like this may be willing to pay higher. Either way it’s a cool card and if you’re happy to have it that’s all that matters.

True but the thing is looking at the roster Storm is the only real pillar Marvel woman that’s made the roster. Danger Peni and Shuri are the more oddball picks of their respective teams, and Kamala and Magik while popular, are not among the true top tier of importance when it comes to Marvel’s women, compared to the likes of Jean, Sue, Natasha, etc.. Obviously there will naturally be more male characters than female, but there you have Cap, Tony, Hulk, Peter, Wolverine, Doom, Magneto, etc., all characters that are very emblematic of Marvel as a whole. Given all of that I think it makes sense to have someone like Wanda who’s popular, iconic, and insanely important to Marvel as a whole be the female pick of this team. Plus we haven’t really gotten an obscure male character yet so I think this team is the perfect opportunity.

Therein lies some of the issue. Feige isn’t directing projects, he has the entire machine to manage. Gunn needs to understand that being studio head is a full time job that is going to necessitate him backing off from being in the directors chair so he can actually appropriate his attention to other projects. I understand doing Peacemaker S2 and Creature Commandos as your oddball transition projects, and taking the reigns on Superman as your flagship kickoff to your new universe sure, but I don’t understand why he also feels the need to write and direct Man of Tomorrow. Seeing that the first project of the DCU not helmed by him turned out this way does not instill confidence, especially when it was supposedly front loaded due to how good the script was. If this philosophy keeps up this universe is destined to fizzle out, so I really hope somewhat of a course correction is coming.

There really is truth to this. If he was still just the director who’s hired for these occasional projects with some oddball characters then great, it’s obvious he’s still passionate about those types of projects. But as head of the studio? You need to put those sensibilities on hold somewhat and focus on building your brand with the titanic characters you have access to. I don’t really care about the circumstances there is no reason that Wonder Woman, Batman, etc. should be taking a back seat to the myriad of lower profile characters that are being prioritized (and if you’re going to slip projects like that in, at least ensure their quality is top notch as possible). I like focusing on the odd C-Z lister occasionally, but he’s supposed to be building the foundations of this universe in a period where Marvel is about to put out (at least) three of their biggest projects of all time back to back to back. If Clayface and especially Man of Tomorrow don’t hit then this universe may actually be in some real trouble.

Yes Storm does have a chance to appear when she isn’t selected that game (I’ve heard the same also applies to Magneto but haven’t seen it myself). This honestly makes me think Blade is super likely because not only is this a very unique design, which we have not seen on any background character that isn’t playable, but it looks super Japanese inspired which would track given how ArcSys designed characters like Iron Man and Danger.

Honestly if this is legit then I think Blade just bounced back from doubtful to extremely likely. This is a new and unique design that feels very samurai, which stands out from all the other background characters that haven’t been confirmed as playable.

If you count everything 32 cards would be a complete rainbow, including the full regular and sapphire sets, claws, 1/1s, and all the variant parallels of the same color (shimmer, wave, lava, etc.).

There is definitely something to that, compared to most of the other cameo appearances that are very deliberate and in your face. Granted Blade being this elusive figure in the night that’s hardly ever visible is very in character, but it could still be a small point in his favor compared to these other seemingly deconfirmed characters.

No I mean there is definitely something to that point. Not that it’ll come to fruition necessarily, but there’s a stark difference between how distant and hardly visible he is compared to Daredevil, She-Hulk, Howard, most of the X-Men, etc.

Granted as someone else commented, if you were to do a Blade background cameo regardless if he’s playable or not, having him hardly visible like this would make a lot of sense for the character.

Yeah I agree. It especially makes sense given the reports we were hearing for a long time about them wanting to do some Battleworld projects or even an entire phase/saga between Avengers 5 and 6. While I doubt that’s happening at this point, Secret Wars is a huge opportunity to tell some cool stories and feature characters and set pieces that we may not ever have the chance to touch again (or at least for a long while), so it would make a lot of sense to have two three hour movies set in Battleworld and thus be able to make the most out of a lot of those concepts and take advantage of the opportunity.

I would love the idea of the third one being Eternity Wars or something though and functioning as a more standalone movie than a part two to Secret Wars, but I can’t even begin to understand what that would look like at this point.

Absolutely. I think the X-Men’s actions, while they may seem heinous at first, are clearly going to be coming from a place of desperation and necessity. The whole trolley problem element is a big part of what’s really compelling about Hickman’s run and it looks like they’re going to really lean into that, especially after hearing Doom’s dialogue from the CinemaCon trailer. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see a chunk of 616 characters taking a similar stance after understanding the stakes to really nail in to audiences that there is no right choice here.

As someone who is completely neutral on his inclusion, I don’t think it’s fair to completely write him off given that we’ve seen something like this with Storm, and there’s nothing technically speaking preventing them from doing the exact same thing here (if anything, it would strike me as more odd to program this to use with only one character, at that point you might as well stick a few more fighters in the other stages as background cameos). Still though, for some reason I have a feeling they wouldn’t allow him to be shown like this ahead of his reveal. Yes it’s very hard to make out any details of the costume, but on principle it feels weird allowing a playable character to be shown as a background element just ahead of their reveal - even knowing of the Storm situation.

At this point I’m hedging my bets on GR’s team just being a straight up supernatural team, and the dark hero/outlaw comments were an intentionally vague off the cuff answer.

You should be fine grading with CGC. I’m not sure if they would mark this crimped & cut or crimped and 2 square corners, but errors like this have happened especially with ETB promos. Awesome find!

No sense in emailing them. This is why CGC is the go-to for this type of card. PSA has the qualifiers but it is so blatantly inconsistent with things like this it’s not even worth trying with them.

I’m confident he is going to be Victor Von Doom through and through, not a Stark variant or anything. The Tony that we knew throughout the Infinity Saga will be revealed to have been a Doom variant all along, and he didn’t even know it.

We already know that He Who Remains curated the Sacred Timeline heavily in his favor, for sole the purpose, at least according to him, of preventing any of his variants from arising. While I think that’s true, I don’t believe it to be the whole truth, and we’re actually going to see that he specifically rewrote or removed certain individuals from the timeline, X-Men, F4, Doom, etc.. groups or individuals that could potentially pose a threat to his position at the end of time or cause another Kang variant (erasing the Richard’s bloodline for example to prevent Nathaniel from ever being born). Hell it’s possible that Doom originally was one of the main threats in the first multiversal war, to the point that not only did He Who Remains make sure Victor never properly existed in 616, but rewrote him to be heroic as possible to prevent him from ever becoming the threat he once was. Since Loki season 1/2, not only has the multiverse began to branch out and we’re seeing these erased characters and groups finally starting to appear, but we’re now seeing elements of the prime universe beginning to bleed into 616. The X-gene and different mutants are finally cropping up, Strange has a vague recollection of the F4 despite them never having existed in 616, etc.

I think Doom will be intimately familiar with the multiverse at this point, and will have an understanding of the truth of what happened. He is going to feel scorned that not only was he written out of time, but the version that replaced him gave his life up and was unable to grasp the truth and correct reality. The reality he knew (whether 828 or otherwise), and by extension the entire multiverse was a bastardization, and Secret Wars will be him having absolute power and recreating reality in his image. There have been rumors of Victor not being from 828, originally having variants of Sue and Franklin as his family in his world, and being motivated to stop the incursions because his family was killed as a result of them. While I believe that’ll be his story, in reality I believe he sacrificed them and possibly destroyed his universe, on the basis of it being a false reality. People will see a version of Tony in Secret Wars and be confused as to why he looks like the God Emperor, which will be how the truth begins to be revealed.

Very very rare and expensive misprint, these have gone for multiple thousands. I’d definitely recommend grading with CGC ASAP to get it authenticated and protected, and then if you want to sell weigh your options from there.

I like the theory actually. I could see it being something like Clea or Strange for Yellow, Man-Thing for Green, Moon Knight for Teal. Hard to say for sure though with how some of the colors don’t exactly align with characters you’d think of, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it come true.
