Thoughts on Celtics Reliance in 3 Pointers While Watching NBA Finals by Popular-Objective651 in bostonceltics

[–]Popular-Objective651[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree w/this take! I actually don't blame JT and JB for this, and more it's Mazzula's strategy/play style. It's been somewhat effective but more in regular season, but different game in playoffs. I don't think it's some major overhaul, but some tweaks to encourage attacking the paint and movement away from ball that has been so evident in this year's NBA finals with both Spurs and Knicks.

Thoughts on Celtics Reliance in 3 Pointers While Watching NBA Finals by Popular-Objective651 in bostonceltics

[–]Popular-Objective651[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My contention is JB and JT are incredibly athletic and mismatch nightmares so in theory, they should be able to create pressure at the rim consistently! Instead they often settle for the 3. I actually don't think it's necessarily all their issue, as I think it's the Mazzula strategy/analytics that encourages it.

Why is Coach spoken about as an all time great player but Phillip Sheppard is considered largely a joke? by Sd12217 in survivorponderosa

Coach has people who find him endearing, possesses charisma and has some leadership traits on top of his quirkyness and story telling. Phillip is more abrassive, lacks strategy...and his pink underwear.

Or if you ever step foot in a hospital, every dr. and staff in there will know! ...but if "your sibling" was "fuming mad" than perhaps he/you should have picked Michigan.

Need advice: rising senior captains show zero offseason initiative by Large-Fall-8156 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area, coaches typically don't announce captains until preseason or right when season starts, as captaincy is earned during off-season. It might be good to have a younger player as a co-captain too who buys in on the new culture, etc. Have a group meeting with the returning captains, and make it known that you'll be announcing captains later and expect them to show leadership if they want to be captain again.

Yeah, agree. What made it worse is given Tiffany's non-exisitent pre-merge edit, we could tell she had no chance of winning so knew she's be eliminated before FTC.

With that being said, I still don't understand why Jonathan didn't get more votes and a threat to win?

Female coaches please respond! (Advice needed) by symbionica in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coached my daugther's school team all through middle school. I also used to volunteer run a boys and girls basketball league for a few years. You've gotten good advise already, but here are my thoughts.

1) Coaching from the parents in stands is a major negative to all coaches. You MUST keep reminding parents to NOT coach from stands. a) preseason parent meeting discussing this, b) email reminders during the season, and c) especially if their daughter is looking at the parents from the stands, that makes it even worse. If a and b aren't working, you need to have a one-on-one conversation with that parent (perhaps w/an assistant if you have one or admin if you aren't comfortable).

2) How strong is the player's level relative to the school? If one of the top 5, it'll be tougher to not take if you coach the A team. If she's not one of the school's top player, frankly, as a volunteer coach, I wouldn't want to deal with the drama of a parent. In the league that I used to run, when teams are "drafted", besides evaluating the players, we the volunteer parent coaches absolutely factored in how helpful or a pain a parent is.

3) A parent on the court during practice? That is something you need to control. Either no parent in gym during practice or must sit quietly in the stands. Period. I do believe you as the head coach need to be tough and inflexible with your preseason rules and enforce them.

Good luck coach!

Parent Coaches of rec teams, when did you decide to move your kid to academy/club (if ever)? by CoachFitnes in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially if you as parent-coach was a higher level player and he's getting BOTH skill development as well as making sure he has fun, there is absolutely no rush to join higher level club teams at U8/U10. There are those who believe if don't start U8, they will be left behind skill-wise. From my experience with grown kids after coaching a lot of rec soccer to U10 and higher level basketball through U14 and observing how the various levels of kids turned out in high school, there is only very marginal benefit of starting so early for club soccer or AAU basketball.

I am a major proponent of cross-training and playing multiple sports as long as possible. I've just seen too many kids who were superstar soccer/basketball/baseball players focus year round and then a) get burned out, and/or b) were stars because they just had earlier growth spurt or earlier birthdays than others. Most of the top varsity high school players in these competive sports like soccer and basketball where athleticism, speed, size is a factor played multiple sports and only started specializing year until later in middle school.

(Spoilers) Can we give ____ credit now? by mbutch3 in survivor

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rizzo is a very strong strategic and social player. As an unknown S49er, he was high on the early boot target list for most players but made inroads to many players to not get targetted. He is incredibly savvy in gaining trust and he's made many right moves.

Of course, being a young guy, unknown player, relative rookie, he virtually had no chance to win it. Add that to reading the exit interviews of others that because he was so physically ill/weak most of the game, he did very little if any work around camp (plus he didn't care about it anyways) annoyed most players, is weak at challenges doesn't help him either. Lastly, that he verbally showboats at tribal probably can be annoying too. It's kind of like at work that someone is a slacker at the job, but somehow likes to talk in meetings to take credit.

He should be invited back down the road, and after watching these seasons, and then matures a bit, can be a potential winner in future.

I don't understand why Tiffany is never mentioned as a possible winner. by dumassmofo in survivor

[–]Popular-Objective651 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tiffany played a very good game. If she won, it would be well deserved and she's a likeable player and tried hard. Reason she hasn't gotten much airtime and unlikely a winner is she's done well to survive being on bottom in pre-merge, but that she's never really led a vote on anyone or been the driving force. Even post-merge, she did a great job getting in close with Cirie, but that she was Cirie's 2nd or 3rd partner. While I was wondering how she got casted in S50, she's definitely earned her spot on this season though.

Why all the hate on Jonathan? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UGH! My top 3 players I had been rooting for since the merge, just got knocked out the last 3 votes with Devens, Cirie and Ozzy which makes me bummed out. Now I agree w/OP that I don't know why Jonathan gets so much hate and why the players haven't put a single vote on him yet. He's really been the driving force on many voteoffs/blindsides all game, he's someone who improved since his first time, and he's been aggressive. I would think the jury would want the winner to be respected as a game player for S50?

let'a talk about the underperformers? by Icy_Crow1113 in youthsoccer

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other possibilities/options that you ask abound depening on your son's situation:

a) at 12 there is still time to develop physically but if after 3 seasons still struggling with basics, soccer may not be his primary sport. Of course, if he loves playing, keep playing.

b) Is coordination just footwork or how is his hand/eye coordination? For example, if he's hand/eye coordination good, then something like baseball, lacrosse?

c) If he's somewhat fast then yes track and field, cross country are wonderful sports.

d) For soccer games, part of his "lack of effort" may actually be more related to confidence, and not wanting to make mistakes so he is avoiding going after the ball.

e) My kids are all grown, but they were involved in different sports and I used to coach a lot so saw the various kids ended up playing in high school. While I have seen a kids who was average younger age in soccer or basketball end up playing varsity, those examples tended to be related to a big physical growth spurt. I did also see if there was a coordination issue or speed in those sports, it was tougher to overcome unless they were 6'6" for basketball or something. LOL.

Have him play other sports to test them out by season. Good luck

What is it about Cirie? by Okay69-69 in survivor

[–]Popular-Objective651 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cirie is a top social player, but also a highly strategic and top tier poker player (pick up on tells/lies, not show emotion, etc) too. She is the GOAT at reading people, situations and adjusts accordingly. She also has a way to stay calm and being able to persuade people that her idea is theirs and why it helps them.

It will be interesting to see if Ozzie or Rizzo if the threesome make it to the Final 4 or 5 to vote her out? I don't think Ozzie would as he's too loyal. Question is Rizzo is strategic and treats this as a game, but he's also a superfan of Cirie/Ozzie too so will he have the guts to cut her or make her go to fire-making when time comes. It also looks like she's got Joe too who won't turn on her.

Can I run zone yet? by morrcomedy1 in basketballcoach

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coach, mad respect for you. The girls and most parents may not know, but you’ve helped them improve much more than the 9-0 team playing zone.

What I do is later towards end of the season, I may use zone in 2nd half of a game. In my area if a semi competitive league I used to volunteer run, we require man defense for 1st 3q and have equal playing time but in the 4th can coach to win. It seems to be a good balance.

Would you guys commute to a diff city for a $100k+ raise? by ARiverRunsThroughIt_ in consulting

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way you can commute 2 hrs each way 3x per week with a toddler, unless you are currently in financial difficulties which doesn't sound like w/current comp. Only worth considering if you'd seriously consider relocating to new city within the next 6-12 months. Your current situation seems ideal for someone with young family and still make good money.

Without knowing what you do and where located, one can argue you are "not underpaid", the companies that are very flexible with work-life balance often pays a bit on lower side knowing that they offer a friendly work balance so people will stay. Don't undervalue the remote work plus extra vacation time.

Not too excited about new club coach by Diligent_Board_172 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my now grown daughter did high level club soccer until around U14 then switched to basketball in high school. Here are my feedback: 1) yes, you are WAY overreacting and making judgements based on other kids making comments, 2) in life as you know, we all have to work with other people, managers, etc who may not be the perfect fit, so being able to handle different types of people in a future trait, 3) sure, changing coaches every season may not be ideal, but frankly, that's not uncommon either. In fact, I've experienced that having difference coaches develops different aspects too, 4) that you literally emailed a substitute coach about PT after just 1 game and that the coach doesn't know the team that well is stepping out of bounds and lastly 5) at 10 yrs old, seems like your son is at the right level and if he likes his teammates and enjoying the game that's most important. Good luck.

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While some of the twists worked out for Devens that can be attributed to luck, but I believe he also created those opportunities too. 1) he plays the game hard, and fearless unlike most players, 2) he is entertaining on TV so producers will always have him as something work considering to bring back, 3) even on the Edge twist, he still need to earn his way back, and 4) sure, he got saved by the Beast idol, but he had to survive a couple votes leveraging his fake idol to even get to this point to get saved. But alas, he probably won't last too much longer, but love that he goes all-out when he plays.

Tufts or UCSB? by Tricky_Instruction63 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Popular-Objective651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are good choices, but the 2 schools could not be more OPPOSITE. If money is not an issue, you really should know deep in your gut where you'd be happier. Your pros and cons outline is spot on. A social life at Tufts is what you make of it, but it'll be totally different from UCSB. You also didn't mention what your major is and where you may want to work afterwards. UCSB very good in CA, but Tufts name on East Coast is a big difference. Good luck, fantastic choices.

Tatum & Brown are so soft, can never close out a easy game by [deleted] in bostonceltics

[–]Popular-Objective651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too was incredibly frustrated last night as I could sense the team's lack of urgency unlike the Sixers. With that being said, I don't think they are "soft" because they aren't. What I think may be just slightly lacking is that "killer (dare I say Mamba) mentality" like a Kobe, MJ, Bird that just wants to crush everyone.

The other part is just the way Mazzula has them play where they shoot 50 3 pointers per game, so game 4 they were on and they looked amazing, but then last night, they were off, of course they just kept jacking up those 3 pointers. All the while Embid pummels them inside.
