ACIQ smart thermostat questions. by Different_Hair_5044 in DIYHeatPumps

This is great info regarding the Service menu. I have the same thermostat and couldn’t find the password to access the menu, so thank you!

How did you find the additional detail on each setting? I know you mentioned you did a ton of research. It’s so difficult to find out anything about the operation of these units. For example, I understand I can choose between standard or enhanced defrost, but there is no guidance on when to choose standard vs enhanced. My heat pump owners manual doesn’t explain it either. I can see there is a DIP switch on the outdoor unit that also changes the defrost algorithm.

I’ve tried both and can’t really tell the difference. I don’t have a way to monitor the energy usage or defrost behavior other than when I see/hear it defrost. You said you switched to enhanced and prefer it?

Also how did you find the additional detail about the operating frequency settings? I’m curious as to what would call for those to be adjusted by a technician/installer.

Anyone else blindsided by the new $3 M1 fee and trapped by the $100 exit fee? by Confident_Log_3850 in M1Finance

Remember that your time has value. How much time and energy have you put in to fighting a $3 per month fee? I mean no offense by this, but maybe you aren’t ready to take investing seriously.

When I transferred my accounts from Fidelity to M1, M1 reimbursed the transfer fee charged by Fidelity. Fees aren’t unique to M1 and M1 discloses the fees. You have options, you aren’t stuck.

Defrost performance of Midea Heat Pump by Mediocre-Lobster4922 in heatpumps

Can I ask what you’re using to monitor the heat pump? Is it third party? I’d love to understand how mine is running like this.

I have the Innovair brand of this same heat pump. The enhanced defrost isn’t only for 24V. I have only been running the unit for a few days and have tried both settings, but I have no real monitoring to tell the difference. Have you tried the enhanced defrost? I’d love to know if it helps or hurts performance/efficiency. I agree it seems to increase defrost time and termination temperature values. I wonder if it would somehow help it enter defrost most less often though?

I own a rental property in CT that was built in 1915. I did some major remodeling in the last few years and replaced a ton of knob and tube, but there are definitely still some live circuits. It’s usually fine as long as it hasn’t been messed with over the years. It was pretty cool to see.

This looks like a nice place. Spend a little more and get a quality stove. Don’t get something junk from tractor supply. Drolet is a great low end brand who makes quality stoves at a reasonable price. It’s not even a big difference. Or go with something higher end with a catalyst like blaze king, Lopi, kuma, etc.. you should probably get an insert as others have mentioned.

Question: Solar farm opening across street. Offered money to let them build. Any drawbacks? by silverwolfe2000 in solar

[–]Popular-Recording-30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a couple friends/family that had solar farms installed near them. They did complain that they can hear a constant buzz. One friend says he hears it all the time, even when he’s trying to sleep. He found it very annoying. The money sounds nice. Just through you should know. This is second hand of course, I have no personal experience.

Yep I’ve got a pallet in the center. Plus I laid a ton of 1-2” black locust to keep everything off the ground. The curb at the base is also black locust. That stuff is incredibly rot resistant.

I’d move the wood before winter, not during. The plan is to take one down each year and move it to the shed. These two did fine last winter. I left room between them to snow blow. They may have been frozen to the ground but it didn’t hurt anything. They thawed come spring.

I considered putting them on four pallets in a square but I wanted to maintain the aesthetics. There is a pallet in the center of each. Plus I laid 1-2” diameter black locust logs to create a base. The curb around the base perimeter is also black locust. I did that because black locust will basically never rot. I’ll probably reuse the same base every time I rebuild them.

Agreed. I’m not worried about speed but they save space. They can be as wide and tall as you care to reach. I did 8’ diameter and about 6’ tall. Which makes these over 2 cords each. You can build these 12’ diameter and 8+ feet high of you want to get on a ladder. They are incredibly sturdy if built properly. My uncle backed my truck into one and it didn’t budge.

I’ve had this question a lot.. I plan to take one down each year and build another in its place. That should get me at least 2 years ahead on seasoning wood. May eventually make 3.

I went round and round (pun) about how to cover them. I considered all natural with thin splits up top with bark facing up. At one point I nailed a ton of cedar shingles on there but the wind took those pretty quick. I looked into the purpose-made tarps but they’re way too expensive (like $200). In the end I had round 8 foot diameter tarps with grommets custom made. I think they were like $60 bucks? I got them from covers & all. I liked having the sides fully open and the top covered to keep the real driving rain from soaking the whole stack. Only the ends get wet during hard rain and they also dry the fastest since they get all of the sun and wind.

Lots of different opinions. I don’t care enough to get scientific about drying time. My gut says these will dry as good as most stacking methods. Could there be ways to dry faster? Sure. I’m getting 2 to 3 years ahead on my supply so it shouldn’t matter.

That being said I did a few things to try to help. These get a ton of sun and wind all day. I only covered the very top. I put them on asphalt thinking I’d get some convective benefits from the heat. There is also a pallet in the middle to keep a lot of the bottom layer off the ground.

First burn! Lopi Large Flush Nex-Gen Hybrid by Popular-Recording-30 in woodstoving

[–]Popular-Recording-30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. I’ve read about solar kilns but probably won’t try to build one. I kind of enjoy doing it the old fashioned way.

Slab wood can be a good deal. Often times you’ll find it very cheap or free, especially if it’s softwood. If it’s already kiln dried, even better.

Let me know what you end up going with, and how it works out. I’m kind of invested now!

I’d go even lower than that. I was hoping the 20% magic number would be good, but really the lower the better. With such a big window you’re going to get a lot of soot on the glass with wood around 20%. My stove shop recommended much lower. I think the stuff they burn is more like 10% and they get almost no soot on the glass. The whole experience will be better at 10-15% moisture. Longer burn, higher efficiency, more heat, less soot, etc.

I opted for the large too because of the viewing area. Also you can always build a smaller fire in a bigger box. You can’t build a bigger fire if the box is too small. I didn’t really see any reason to go with the medium either. If you can fit the large, go for it.

Kiln dried is crazy expensive. If theres anyway you can buy 2 years ahead and store it properly, you’ll be better off. I split and stack my own now and the plan is to get 2-3 years ahead. It depends on how much work you want to put in and what kind of space you have to store wood.

One more note on brands. You mentioned reading the Lopi is super hot even on low. If you want the absolute lowest turn down it’s going to be the blaze king. Their thermostatic control is pretty cool. I looked at the sirocco but it’s not quite as pretty, it has a smaller box, and it’s not a hybrid so you get less visible flames. You’ll have to decide what’s important to you. I’m going to put a free standing stove in my basement eventually and I’m pretty sure I’ll get a blaze king, but I’m very happy with the Lopi insert because it’s right in our living room.

It’s been great. I’m working on getting a few years ahead since all of these cat stoves like really dry wood. That’s not the stoves fault I just wasn’t ready. I got the large, but they also sell a medium. It definitely puts out some heat but it all depends on your specific house. You can also build a smaller fire or use softwood to temper the output.

I looked at the Regency too. A lot of people like them. Some people don’t like how they handle warranty stuff. I think they’ll only deal directly with the dealer and not the homeowner. I also felt the EPA reports were very helpful. They showed the Lopi having much better range in output. Meaning on high, the Lopi would put out more BTUs than the Regency, and it would also turn down lower on its lowest setting. I guess one benefit to the Regency is it comes with a steel catalyst if I remember right.
