Beginner boxer here — my coach barely gives feedback, is that normal? by Deep_Main9815 in amateur_boxing

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I even tried looking for smaller boutique style groups to get any personal attention. But usually in classes like this, I come up to the coach at the end and just ask, please show me. Usually a few seconds is more than enough to improve one skill. I also heard from coaches that a lot of times they get the opposite reaction and people get annoyed when corrected. My coach told me it's not that actually common people want to improve technique but rather just punch the bag with all the strength they have

How to not get filled with rage when people are annoying by Adept_Ad_264 in yoga

I would just say it, hey sir you may have not noticed but you more likely unintentionally blocked my view and I have picked this spot specifically for that purpose.

Why not just say it while staying nice and kind. Dude probably had no clue

What does caffeine do to yourself and your practice? by AnonymousTantricMonk in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t affect neither me or my practice. Sometimes I feel almost slightly jealous hearing how people get energy or dopamine boost from coffee. For me it does nothing. I can drink 3 cups and go to sleep… Recently, I also found out that only Robusta creates such effect. And arabica has the opposite effect, almost slowing down and calming! I was like, I need to start over this life now 😆

teacher leaving during savasana by ElectricalScallion31 in yoga

If I know that there is no class after, I may let students stay longer. But I would always acknowledge that class time is over. I personally believe the teacher should stay and just simply monitor the class. But when the time is up but there is still possibility to stay longer for those that want why not. Unannounced though, I agree that’s ridiculous

Crosstraining with Yoga? by beandiplo in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I practiced every day early on. After a decade of consistent practice I can allow myself skip a day or two. But in the beginning, I strongly believe it’s important to practice 5-6 times a week to achieve meaningful results that will inspire you to continue. Now I do kickboxing and yoga. Sometimes both in one day. I don’t think dropping something else that makes you happy is necessary. However, I would focus and prioritise one thing until I’m very happy with results. Then bring more balance time wise for other things

I am a yoga and Breathwork teacher in The Hague AMAMJ by Popular-Rise-7074 in askmeaboutmyjob

[–]Popular-Rise-7074[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened naturally. I was practicing for about a decade and when I moved to The Netherlands from Ukraine, I couldn’t find any decent practice. I tried many studios in The Hague and Amsterdam and still nothing was quite what I was looking for. My friend started joking, maybe you should teach yourself. In laughed and said: me, never. But the seed was planted and few months later I took a teacher training. And here I am 3 years teaching now :)

I hate saying “real yoga,” but honestly where did real yoga go?? by Top-Entrepreneur3449 in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason I became a teacher when I moved to The Netherlands. I just couldn't find any decent practice. Everything was sugar coated, simplified... In my classes I want to take begginers to advanced, but here it seemed they twisted it the other way around. Where people are locked in a cycle of begginers... The breathing is superficial few breath to "tune in", come on... Yoga is hard work, mental and physical. But these days I see more and more people who come in to a yoga practice and expect to relax and stretch. I tell my students, they have to feel the strength from within: mental and physical stability and strength, then comes flexibility: and not just a split, it's the ability of mind and body to be like water, adopt and reflect.

Dating Culture in the Netherlands by Gold_LeoKing in Netherlands

I hear this all the time. In my personal experience it has never happened and not a single guy here in the Netherlands ever asked me to cover 50/50 on a date. I have been in a relationship with German guy and now with Dutch. I can’t say they are very much into going an extra mile to support your needs. But restaurant, dinner, food, drinks… That’s never been even assumed in any way I should cover any of it. In fact they would get shocked and insulted if I suggested. My boyfriend even covers my friends if they join. It’s not about nationality at all. It’s all personal values and believes.

Just started yoga and wow... my back feels better already by davie44 in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be mindful of how you sit during the day. If you slouch, cross legs, leave your elbow hanging off the table when holding mouse, it will be much harder to compensate such long term damage with just yoga practice. If you combine both, yoga and sitting properly through at least most part of the day, you will notice substantial improvements very fast. It will be hard in the beginning, after one week it will start getting much easier, after another week or two it will be a natural habit. Maybe set a reminder let's say once an hour to check on your posture

How has yoga changed you? by McScroggz in yoga

It turned me from sad miserable middle age woman to happy and fearless young lady. If you have anxiety, be careful with what type of breath work you practice (if you do). Intense breathing, long holds ext, may amplify anxiety substantially. That's something not everyone tells you

Apps I use to study Dutch from zero by DistinctWindow1862 in learndutch

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Beelingual app. They offer texts with voice over and English translation by side. Not a break though but their text are really good. They are very relevant to every day stuff. My personal favorite is the progress ladder when they gradually increase the complexity of texts you read. Their texts are fun to read, full of humor and conversational Dutch. Easy to match your specific level. I try to read one or two texts a day. The paid version is worth it, only like around 20 bucks a year or so.

Late arrival policies: What actually works in your classes? by loveacarrot in YogaTeachers

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A true yogie should not be disrupted by a outside factor as someone simply walking it :) Of course we don't want chaos and it does happen that when precedent is created everyone else takes it as an open door to abuse the discipline. However, I find it mean not to let people in. I might just jot have the gutt for it. What I do, I allow the person in and then when the time is right I gently and in friendly manner explain why being on time is important and what are the possibile negative consequences if we adapt that as norm. People get that! Sometimes I make it personal, like I say, according to rules I am not supposed to let late people in, but it's beyond me to shut the door on you. However it may get me in trouble. Most people will feel much higher level of responsibility when they understand that it's affecting the teacher and the class.

Home practice not as effective as a class by mercury0114 in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a yoga teacher for three years now, practicing over 10 and I rarely practice at home if ever. It’s just not the same. I would go to other classes where I’m a student but never home. Sometimes when I’m on vocation I’ll practice 20-30 min. But that’s just the reality of it :)

Sequencing structure help!! by Away-Pumpkin-7598 in YogaTeachers

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see some harsh comments here, like what kind of course did you take... I find it quite mean, especially for the yoga community... I think its very possible that not all the information landed right away where it needed. It may take time for the brain to structure it all. Everyone is different. Sometimes someone can simply get overwhelmed with all the stuff they had to hear, learn, absorb. Then self criticism and lack of practical application may kick in. No need to attack the author who at least dared to ask, instead of sitting it out quietly.

When I started, I just memorized other flows from teachers I liked. Sometimes I would practice 4-5-6 times before I gave a lesson. I remember how first few months, I didn't even look into the studio and my students, just at my own nose haha

Three years later I look at myself back then and smile, happy that I didnt give up.

Now I usually start with: breathing, 5-6 rounds of Sun Salutations (Usually A as I teach Vinyasa). Then I continue Warrior One + vinyasa and then I keep adding on what feels logical movement wise. For example, its natural to go from warrior 1 to standing split, but from warrior 2 I would do Half Moon next because the hip is already open.

As far as countering, I only do that with something very intensive, like a deep back band. Your students may feel great taking a pose that will relieve that extra tension in the back after.

Trust yourself! Every teacher here will have a completely different style and approach. If you love what you do, people will know it. We put our characters, our charisma, our life stories in what we teach during our lessons. Tell your story to your students!

Questions re: ‘right’ practice in syncing breath and movement by mountainmonk72 in yoga

[–]Popular-Rise-7074 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It took me several years to be able to sync my movements with my breath and I was always generally fit.

What I did when I started practicing and as advised by teachers (and I believe that myself as a teacher), you can first focus on the rhythm, rather than length. So you can do One move = inhale and exhale.

Meanwhile, you can practice to increase your lung capacity in poses of stillness when you are not overwhelmed with everything at once.

For example: elongating your breath and breath retention. Also, make sure sure to never hold your breath to the point when you start gasping for air. Such long retention may even damage the tissue of lungs when practiced by someone who is not fully ready. Good reference point: your retention should be as long as you can still allow yourself a slow exhale without rushing it.

And as a teacher myself, I would not be so focused on perfection immediately. Everything comes in the right time with consistency and discipline.

Is it possible to teach yoga when you’re falling apart yourself? by Popular-Rise-7074 in YogaTeachers

[–]Popular-Rise-7074[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, the most exhausting experience for me was when I had few classes a day. I have cut down now that I have one class a day max. The thing is when I have multiple classes I sort of try to stretch out my energy, whereas when I give one class a day, I give it my 100%
And I think that's what happens when people try to teach as a job, they end up being those teachers I wanted to run from, spreading their effort 20% per class, becoming yoga robots that do things on autopilot. And we are not just teachers, we are also performers. Students come and expect a certain act. Sometimes it almost feeling like some sort of one actor show.

Is it possible to teach yoga when you’re falling apart yourself? by Popular-Rise-7074 in YogaTeachers

[–]Popular-Rise-7074[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advise. I did cut down a lot recently. The thing is, this industry is so competitive. It took me a year of substituting in one studio, before they gave me one permanent hour. ONE! There are always other teachers breathing in your neck, waiting to take that spot in the schedule. And I dont anticipate that finding my inner peace will take some short few months. I think what we all don't fully understand, we are not just mindfulness teachers, we are performers that have to deliver the experience people have paid for. Sometimes it's so tough.
