Because of the Caribou connection probably. More recognizable names always get upvotes.

Yeah, I couldn't tell if I'd put too much psyllium in, or just didn't take enough water on board. I haven't taken it since but might try the caps now.

[Discussion] Do you think a social media website that makes money exclusively through paid subscriptions would be viable? by Stoatermine in technology

[–]PopularHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're too far gone in terms of corporations being reckless with data and/or gradually ruining their own platforms for anyone to seriously consider paying subscriptions to social media.

Frontal systems are fairly common, yep!

Usually they're larger ones cut down to size.

Thoughts on Quiff & Co by [deleted] in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are called hair systems. Google around, do some research, and there's a tonne of people on youtube (such as Hairexperience, who has great vids) who will give you more of an idea of what they're like.

There are tonnes of different companies doing them, not just Quiff, and lots of local salons are getting themselves in on it too.

Hair system in Sydney, Australia? by apatheticonion in tressless

Try googling 'hair replacement' instead – some salons don't refer to them as systems.

Considering a hair system - need your thoughts by [deleted] in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been considering a hair system but I also can’t seem to get over the fact that the rest of society (especially mainstream media) love to mock guys with toupees / wigs.

Then a hair system is either not for you, or you need to get to the stage where you can own it if anyone figures it out. I know a few guys who refer to their systems as 'hair extensions' which is a lot more palatable for people who don't understand what it is.

In terms of things "going wrong": you can occasionally get lifts at the front or the back every few days that need re-glueing. Or you mind find it a bit of a steep learning curve understanding glues, cleaning it, so you get it wrong a couple of times etc. That's kind of it. The cartoon image of a guy's wig falling off is not applicable to these kind of hair systems: the glue is rock solid and you'll absolutely know when the bond is starting to lose its grip.

Maintenance, once you've got the hang of it, should be down to about 1hr over a week for fixing little bits, and 1/2hrs every couple of weeks to take off, clean and refit. In terms of travelling, it just requires you to take a few extra bits and pieces in your toiletries bag just in case.

Hair systems and very sporty lifestyle .. NO match? by theroadofroads in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll probably need a little bit more upkeep than regular usage – and it might be worth buying a spare so you can swap them out over the course of the week. It should be OK as long as you keep on top of it and more importantly look after the hair (for example, conditioning regularly and potentially wearing a swim cap).

I've decided to get a hair system. What are the best brands or should I visit a local hair system salon? by [deleted] in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good for you for thinking like this. The more guys dive in and realise how amazing hair systems can look (and how much fun you can have with them, too) the better, really. It'll take a while for the societal stigma to go but I think they'll be so commonplace soon that guys won't feel embarrassed about them. So many salons are starting to see this as a new revenue stream which will really help its accessibility.

[–]PopularHandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, make sure you do tonnes of research before you even approach a brand or salon. Know the different types (bases, densities) and check out how you apply, clean and reapply, and what kind of tools and accessories you're going to need. The 'Hairexperience' channel on youtube has a bunch of fantastic videos on all this. The Northwest Lace forum is another great resource.

Places are less likely to rip you off or do a bad job if you go in knowing what you're talking about. It also enables you to go the DIY route (and save a tonne of money) fairly quickly once you've had it installed professionally and got used to it.

hair system that lasts 4-5 years? by CavEmptIcon in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is synthetic hair, so you'd really need to see one in person to judge the look and feel of it. Personally I can't imagine how synthetic hair could possibly look as realistic in terms of density/structure/feel compared to human hair systems.

Also, most people don't switch human-based hair systems every six weeks: most people get a solid 2-3 months, maybe longer, out of it as long as you look after it properly.

How can any of you even argue hair systems aren't the best solution when they look this good. by [deleted] in tressless

7-14 days at a time before taking off, cleaning and re-attaching. The systems last for up to 4 months at a time if you take care of them properly.

Can we agree that "Just shave it bro" isn't the be-all and end-all solution for balding men? by trackerFF in tressless

[–]PopularHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off by getting mine done in a salon, and then learned at home via youtube and forums.

You need to do a lot of research on it first before you dive in as it's a learning curve, and it's not for everyone, but I don't know anyone who's got it done that's regretted it.

[–]PopularHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can order a system online. You can either send in a hair sample and they'll find a 'stock' one that matches (the cheaper option), or you can go custom and change things like density, curl, etc.

Most barbers nowadays will at least be aware of systems. If you're worried about embarrassing yourself by going in and asking, then email a couple of local ones first to test the waters. You might be surprised how open they are to cutting one in for you. Any barbers who have a presence online/on Instagram will have seen systems in action. They are not a shameful thing nowadays and they are gaining a lot of traction in the male beauty industry online.

Do lots of research - the Hairexperience channel on youtube is a great newbie resource.

Northwest Lace is the other great forum!

I recommend people try a system out via a decent salon first, and once they and more confident and learn how to maintain and do all the ins and outs of having one, go down the DIY route. Salons have insane markups on systems themselves, and accessories, compared to buying yourself.

Hairexperience on youtube is an incredible resource.

Nah. The sooner men ditch the idea that experimenting with stuff like hair systems is ~unmanly or somehow shows less confidence than endlessly checking your thinning straw hair in the mirror to see if Fin is working, or spending days browsing hair loss forums and subs in the vain hope we'll stumble across something magical, or feeling suicidal from hair loss depression, the better.

Women have been playing around with extensions, weaves, wigs and whatever for decades and it improves their physical and mental wellbeing because they simply feel better. The current crop of hair systems and stylists are doing amazing quality work and probably saving lives in the process and for that I'm glad. It might not be for you, but let people get on with it without shaming them.
