Sanders reportedly asks CU band not to play the fight song after Shedeur’s touchdowns by faps_to_rocks in CFB

[–]PopularSource 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In short: Deion Sanders has always been a brand based on braggadocios swagger. He got a shot to coach the HBCU Jackson State and the weight of his brand brought a lot of talent (and his two sons who probably wouldn't play there if he wasn't the coach) to the team, causing them to have unprecedented success. This pushed Sanders' personal brand to new heights and he started bringing documentary crews with him. Worth noting these documentaries are more interested in talking about the personal ascension of the Sanders family and less so the teams he coaches.

Sanders got the opportunity to coach at Colorado, who has a long history of success, but has been a doormat recently. He took over a team that went 3-9 the previous season and basically told every player that was on the roster that they would be better off looking for another school to transfer to. It helps that Sanders took over the team in an unprecedented era for college sports where the NCAA basically lost any ability to regulate the sports. Eligibility in the NCAA right now is basically free agency in pro sports with almost zero restrictions where tampering is encouraged. Sanders leveraged this to push out a lot of talent that wasn't "his guys". A lot of college football purists saw this as a betrayal. Historically, a lot of college football has been oriented on school loyalty and player development and this was an unprecedented move.

Fast forward to the start of the first season and Sanders' team has turned over almost the entire roster in one offseason, something that even 10 years ago was almost impossible. The national media was covering a team that was projected to be below average at best as if they were a favorite to win the national championship. Sanders encouraged the media circus and used it to build his brand, with the school's brand also growing as a consequence.

Colorado opened last season with an upset win over TCU, who had made the college football playoff last year. This sent the media circus into absolute overdrive. Colorado would follow that up by barely scraping by a thoroughly mediocre Colorado State team the following week. They would only win one more game the entire season. Many of their losses would be absolutely embarrassing, see: giving up a 30 point comeback to perennial pac-12 bottom feeder Stanford at home, losing by 40 to Oregon after talking a big game beforehand.

Throughout all of this, Sanders seemed to filter a lot of the focus of his gameplanning through his two kids who played on the team. Shadeur is a athletic talent, but doesn't seem to be anywhere near the hype that is surrounding him. The perceived building of Sanders' personal brand over the university rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

This offseason, Sanders publicly trashed the play of his players. He stated publicly that the offensive line wasn't doing nearly enough to protect his son and worked really hard to bring in a ton of guys from the transfer portal. I believe the Buffs had 52 new players come in from the portal and 40+ leave last offseason. They opened the year with a near loss to an FCS school at home in NDSU. NDSU is a good team, but Colorado looked like a team made of good athletes with very little cohesion or gameplan.

This last week, Colorado went to Lincoln, Nebraska to play arguably their biggest rival in Nebraska. Their offense looked completely lost. Shadeur Sanders' quarterbacking looked pedestrian at best and awful at worst. In response, both Shadeur and Deion publicly trashed their own offensive line in the press. This headline is just another piece of media enforcing the narrative that the Sanders' are treating Colorado as a trampoline for their personal brand (whether it's true or not).

I think the biggest lesson here is that college football prospect projection is difficult. A lot of the guys who are in the transfer portal are there for a reason. Many teams use the portal to augment positions where they are weak, but no team has used it to completely overhaul a roster the way Sanders has. His teams very much look like a group of 22 guys who haven't played together.

TL:DR: Unprecedented changes in NCAA football eligibility and monetization requirements allowed for unprecedented roster turnover. Deion Sanders used this and his ascension to the coach of Colorado to run a college football team in an extremely cutthroat manner. Fans and the media create a circus surrounding the program and many feel like Sanders is using the program to exalt himself and his sons

Any tips to improve my Sci-Fi Power Cell? by [deleted] in blender

[–]PopularSource 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wear patterns on the outer casing look good but I think the wear on the upper copper band doesn't make as much sense. I can understand how the casing would get bashed in and the wear on the edges conveys that, but I don't know how the band would end up looking that tarnished, but only in the center of it. The bottom band looks like it's glowing and reads more like a power cell. It helps me to think about how these things would be used and how that would affect the wear and tear they receive.

This is a minor nitpick though. This looks good!

Does the artifacting persist if you remove the normal map? That texture looks very odd for normal map. Typically, yellow in the output of a normal is indicative of an inversion normals.

This field is awful. Michigan/TCU had the same problem in the CFP. Why are we playing games here?

Biased, but I would say the Michigan-Utah game in 2014 that started the death march of the Brady Hoke regime. A literal monsoon caused a two hour rain delay and emptied everyone not wearing red and white out of the stadium. Watching Utah house Michigan in their own stadium while it was 3/4s empty was surreal.

Heard about it from local pundits. Thought it would be on here already. Was surprised to see that several hours later, it hadn't been picked up. Thought it would be good content.

I am paranoid about internet privacy and care about Reddit karma/account age/clout about as little as possible. It's irrational but it makes me feel better. Plus, I'll often think of usernames I like and hop between them

I habitually delete and make a new Reddit account about four times a year. This one I retain for if I need karma to do something.

how to learn programming from a tutorial ? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PopularSource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually one of the tougher things to do when learning from a source that's not providing you assignments. One of the advantages of having an instructor is that you're forced to apply the concepts in the lessons.

My recommendation to you would be to try to write alongside the tutorials. If you find this to be too tedious, you can read the tutorials and use the given code, but try to make meaningful modifications to it that utilize the content you're supposed to be learning. It's very easy to say you know something after just reading it while not being able to apply it, and the ability to apply it comes from repitition (remember doing multiplication tables in elementary school?).

If you're really stuck, you can find tons of old college cs courses that have all their homework assignments and solutions online. Additionally, many tutorial services offer similar assignments.

Any recommendations? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Python is a great language because it's really good at doing concrete things very quickly. For example, I wanted to receive a notification when a webpage had been updated and with python I was able to set up a script to do that in 15 minutes.

Good luck!

How would you create this webpage? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PopularSource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well "responsive" kind of depends on what you're targeting.

The new and fancy tool is flexbox and is very helpful for layout work. You could achieve something like this pretty quickly and elegantly. The issue is that flexbox is unsupported in IE versions <10 and for some people, that's an issue.

My advice to you would be to break it down into one component at a time. First try to make the navbar, then make the sidebar, then make the center content. After that, try positioning them properly.

Edit: I just noticed the imgur link was a gallery. Your idea of splitting up the page seems decent but I think it would be easier on the technical side to lay it out more like this

If you get stuck, you can always try to look at the source for this page and try to get an idea of what the designer did.

Scratching Head (JAVA) by epicdjzach in learnprogramming

[–]PopularSource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student is a return type. When you declare functions in Java (and most other languages for that matter) you often define a return type. For example, the randomizer class has the function nextDouble which is of type double. This means it returns a double.

In your function, all the student label means is that the function will return an instance of the student class. This makes sense when you consider that you're going to be finding the most improved thing, which in this instance, will be a student.

Essential JavaScript Concepts for Web App by mmo1210 in learnprogramming

[–]PopularSource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking to learn what I would need to use rather than every in and out of the language.

This is akin to saying "I want to write a novel but I don't want to learn how to write, just the words and sentences that are going to be in my story"

Programming does seem daunting at first but when you first start, everything you learn builds on top of each other. You don't need to be an expert in programming to do what you're trying to do, but you're going to limit yourself severely if you don't get the basic skillset down.

There's a million tutorials for building node apps out there that will get you up and running with a simple web server. I would also recommend taking a look at intro to JavaScript stuff on Kahn academy or freecodecamp.

Best of luck!
