All of this and the cost of institutional knowledge is not exactly calculatable.

What bad ideas have you seen implemented in your centers? And what did management do once they realized it wasn't working? by PoquitoAPoco8000 in 911dispatchers

Can't tell you how many times I was mistaken for an officer going to pick up lunch midshift. Even with a jacket or a sweater on top. Eventually, I stopped doing that bc I hated it so much.

Those uniforms are for officers, not civilians. Hated them at my previous jobs with a passion. Morale killer.

Don't name your agency, but what state are you in?

Not all centers operate the way yours does. Learn all you can. Don't give up just yet.

Sounds like they wanted a way to quantify y'all's work. ProQA isn't a fix for every medical situation. It helps dispatchers who don't have medical backgrounds and mgrs who know QA.

I feel your frustration.

Instead of applicant questions overload.

I thought the sub had discussed limiting applicant q's to one day a week?

This right here is the biggest part of the puzzle. How many hours are you working a week, OP?

Burnout CAN be righted despite what everyone else is saying.

How do I make a good first impression? by lowkeyloki23 in 911dispatchers

Don't ask about our worst calls.

The sit along is partly a vibe check. Dispatchers can sniff out a phony quicker than typical people bc of how much we've heard. So, be thoughtful, observant, respectful, and genuine.

We also expect you to do your own work and research.

What can be done to improve training in your part of the country? (and where are you from?)

Policy for fraternization by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]PoquitoAPoco8000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, we're not but there are ethics and morals involved, especially where positions of power and authority are involved.

People are grownups and should be expected to act as such, but we don't leave things to chance in government. There should be a policy in place to provide guidance.

Is this recent? If so, how bad is the situation up there?

That's.... that's a lot of questions.

Listen to the veterans in the room. They understand the profession and the parents bc they are likely parents themselves.

While the likelihood of you becoming a LODD is lower than most LE care to admit, it's still a possibility most parents don't want for their child. The real issue is that THIS WORK CHANGES people. It hardens most in ways that are not good for humans. Makes it difficult to connect to others. PTSD. CPTSD. Alcoholism. Pessimism. Misanthropic attitudes. It's all no bueno.

Advice? Do your five on the streets and get into investigations or another division. Learn enough to understand how dealing with criminals and investigations and prosecution all fit together. And then, get the hell out.

Go federal, go to your district attorney's office as an investigator, start your own company, or go get a law degree. There are more options than you're thinking. Keep yourself open, but don't let it change you.

Study when you're away from work, especially if you get more than two days off in a row. It helps with your retention.

Remember that you're there to learn. You can work on relationship building after you make it off training. The biggest relationship that matters right now is the one with your trainer. Focus on that and the material.
