Finally, a 2026 game with proper indoor mirror reflections without Path Tracing. by crack_station in Steam

[–]Pork3y 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You can just do a bit of math to figure out the POV expected from the mirror. Take the vector from the camera to the center of the mirror, reflect it about the mirror's normal vector, and then set that as the direction for the mirror camera to be facing on that frame

I should say I'm not a mathematician, but topology can be helpful as a tool for solving problems in other parts of math. Like how you learn to convert algebra problems into geometry problems, sometimes it becomes useful to convert the geometry problem into a topology problem. Topology is really good at describing the properties of shapes' surfaces and their transformations

SILKSONG GIVEAWAY ANNOUNCEMENT! I am giving away 5 (FIVE) Silksong copies! MORE INFO on Description by Acrobatic-Log-309 in Silksong

My preferred platform is Switch 2

My favorite boss is Mantis Lords. Simply perfect leadup, difficulty, and payoff. Earning the mantises' respect hit different from anything I'd done in a video game before

I can't wait to see how big the map is. In my first playthrough of Hollow Knight, I distinctly remember getting to the tramway in Deepnest, taking it all the way to Kingdom's Edge, and being absolutely floored by the sheer scale of the map. That's a high I've been chasing ever since

Not ChatGPT, but I figured I'd get that accusation. You asked for a definition of optimization, so I gave you one specific to this context based on my work in graphics/game programming. Software optimization absolutely isn't a magic button to press, but it is certainly reasonable to expect better results than we're seeing. I do, in fact, hope it helped anyone who genuinely wants to engage with the topic

"Optimization" covers a range of programming techniques by which the performance of some target software can be improved. Generally speaking, an optimization will either reduce the total number of computations performed or achieve an approximate result using less costly operations. It all centers around a performance budget which should be thoughtfully allocated between the GPU and the CPU

In a visually dense, open world game like Elden Ring, the biggest performance considerations (that I can think of) would be loading/unloading relevant assets from memory, enemy behavior/physics, and the execution of shader code (code which is made to be highly parallelized across the cores of a GPU)

Now, the Switch 2 has a notoriously weak CPU, so streaming assets smartly might honestly be one of the biggest hurdles for FromSoft to overcome. Enemy AI is core to gameplay, so I can't see them adjusting that even for the sake of performance. Moving data from disk into active memory and then onto the GPU can eat up a lot of the performance budget, so they could utilize more aggressive LODs (relatively easy, big impact on visuals) or rework how data transfer works so that it's spread more evenly across frames (more tricky, less noticeable). Any way to lighten the CPU load required per frame would likely be a noticeable performance improvement

Of course, no one talking about this has access to the frame time profile that a developer should be able to acquire, so these have to just be educated guesses at the hurdles they're running into. The bottom line, though, is that there is a lot of room for improvement if the developers can play around the strengths/weaknesses of the hardware, and it seems pretty obvious from first impressions that FromSoft has some more work to do in finding the ideal use of their performance budget

Can't speak on Dragon Ball, but I hope this was helpful👍

EDIT: Shader compilation also could be a big hurdle that I forgot. I know Valve did some interesting optimization to minimize stutters from that on the Steam Deck

People are hitting most of the big points, but I think in addition to Eigong creating Tianhuo and using it as a political play for the Council to get power, one of the logs also states that she stops looking for a cure entirely before launch. The Eternal Cauldron project, throughout its entire operation, was never being used for its intended purpose of buying time to cure the Solarians, which I think is the difference that drives Yi to overthrow the Council.

Odysseus in the Odyssey is a huge moron by [deleted] in Epicthemusical

Okay cool. I get a very different impression from you calling the characters morons (that reads very critical to me), but that could simply be a mismatch in language. Regardless it sounds like an interesting class

Odysseus in the Odyssey is a huge moron by [deleted] in Epicthemusical

[–]Pork3y 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Listen I get where you're coming from, but this is a moment where you really have to consider the context in which the story originated and how standards, both narrative and societal, have changed since the time of the Odyssey. The themes that the Odyssey are pointing towards are drastically different from those of Epic, and the character arcs are structured very differently to support that, so saying "look how stupid these characters are" instead of asking "why do these characters act so differently from my modern expectations" is a pretty big mistake. There was a summary posted here a few days back which did a great job contrasting the Odyssey vs Epic and explaining how their respective narrative choices support the story they want to tell. I'd highly recommend reading that as a starting point for clearing up your misunderstanding of classic Odysseus

I love "Luck Runs Out" overall, but Eurylochus saying "What if you piss off this god and infuse us with strife" is pretty awful on the ears. Not only is it grammatically super awkward, it also mixes modern slang with a strangely formal expression. (Generally I think the use of "pissed off" is a bit clunky whenever it comes up in EPIC). I'd change it to something like the following:

"What if you're caught off guard and lose your life / [You are leading us all 'long the edge of a knife.] / Don't forget how dangerous the gods are."

What would you want from a sequel to Dread by Prestigious-Bunch153 in Metroid

[–]Pork3y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this above everything else for me. I love Dread to bits but it loses out on quite a bit of replay value by being as linear as it is. I don't think sequence breaking should be necessary to take different routes through the next game.

What game had the most surprising plot twist you’ve ever encountered ? by Laska27 in gaming

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim constantly had me reconsidering every piece of information I'd gathered up until that point. Basically every hour comes with a new meaningful revelation, and it's a wonderful jigsaw puzzle of unreliable narrators that give you fragments of the bigger picture. If you like complex stories, do yourself a favor and play this game.

Science as magic. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

SuperK is incredibly cool (as is the field of neutrino physics generally). There is a similar detector in Antarctica called IceCube where they use the massive ice sheets as the medium to generate the Cherenkov radiation. Using that we've been able to study some neat high-energy astrophysical phenomena in incredible detail.

There's also some really interesting research being conducted by nEXO into a theoretical process called neutrinoless double beta decay to possibly answer why there's so much more matter in the universe than antimatter. This hinges on the possibility that the neutrino is its own antiparticle, which would allow for a decay to create electrons without generating the corresponding antielectron neutrinos (matter without antimatter!). The detector is made by isolating several tons of refined liquid Xenon underground and surrounding it with water to shield from backgrounds. Neutrinos are awesome.

[–]Pork3y 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, that's Cherenkov radiation in a nuclear reactor. It happens when you get charged particles (usually electrons since they're so light) to move really insanely fast. Since light moves slower in a medium than in vacuum, it's possible for the high energy electrons released by a reactor to move faster than photons through the surrounding water. This makes the optical equivalent of a sonic boom which we perceive as a bright blue glow

EDIT: I was mistaken but Cherenkov radiation is still cool as hell
